From Camper to Counselor

When Lindsay Brewer came back to her hometown of Winter Park from college, she had no idea that her summer job would lead her to change her career path. When she was younger, Lindsay was a camper at the Rollins College Summer Day Camp. Now, at 19, Lindsay is a counselor and assists with teaching sailing, canoeing and even an aeronautics class. “It’s such a cool experience to come back and be on the other side of it,” said Lindsay, who is now a counselor for some of the classes she took as a camper. “I am having a blast. This is so much fun.”

But this experience has offered her much more than just a summer job, it’s also helped her decide that she wants to change her major from communications to elementary education when she returns to the University of Tampa as a sophomore in the fall. “I have already called my advisor to find out what needs to be done to change my major. This experience has made me realize just how much I love being in a classroom,” Lindsay said.

The Rollins College Summer Day Camp is in its 38th year and provides nearly 600 children with a summer full of activities. There are 40 camp counselors who lead children between the ages of 6-11 to the 30 different classes offered at the camp. The children are exposed to three different curriculum sections, including the arts, enrichment, and sports classes, which provide stimulating activities for a wide array of interests.

This summer, there are eight camp counselors who were previously campers and have returned to Rollins to work. Adam Baumgarten, who was a camper for three years shares, “I really like helping the kids and sharing my knowledge with them.” Though Adam isn’t sure if becoming a teacher is in his future, he does know he’s enjoying his summer job that is proving to be a very rewarding experience.

The second session of this year's Summer Day Camp starts today. For more information on Rollins College Summer Day Camp visit www.rollins.edu/camp.

Local Teachers Get Up Close and Personal with Shakespeare

Twenty teachers from around the world came to Rollins College this summer to step out of their own classrooms and back in time, learning to act, direct, create music, make costumes and even sword-fight. Middle school teachers through college professors became students of Shakespeare at the Florida Center for Shakespeare Studies at Rollins College, during the Drey Shakespeare Summer Institute.

The Institute offered teachers a hands-on, practical approach to theater as they were immersed in the world of Shakespeare and taught all areas of producing a play. The Institute brought in several theater experts to help teach the course. Teachers also developed training materials to take back to their own classrooms.

"This year was especially unique for this program because for the first time, we had two professors travel all the way from China to participate," said Maurice O'Sullivan, co-director of the Institute and Rollins College Chair of the Department of English. "Their presence and lesson on Shakespeare in China provided a special cultural exchange among the teachers."

The directors of the Institute are Stuart E. Omans, Founder of the Orlando Festival and UCF Professor of English, and Maurice O’ Sullivan. The Institute is free for middle- and high- school teachers and college professors in Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties and is funded by the Central Florida English-Speaking Union. Rollins Named Princeton Review "College with a Conscience"

Rollins College was included in The Princeton Review’s and Campus Compact’s "Colleges with a Conscience." The book is now for sale at major bookstores and online book sellers.

The publication cited the following:

"Rollins 'has partnered and collaborated with over 30 different community nonprofits and organizations' over the past three years. Partners have included 'organizations that help serve the needs of children and teens through education, the environment, refugee and immigrant families, and the local Winter Park government.' Among the school’s proudest accomplishments in this area is its work with Fern Creek Elementary School; involvement has grown from a mentoring program to a multi-faceted tutoring, enrichment, and research endeavor. Arriving freshmen make their presence felt in the community through the school’s Reach Out Day of Service Event, 'a new and exciting part of orientation for all first-year students. Rollins now dedicates an entire day during orientation for service and outreach projects in the local community.' "

Holt MACCT Students Visit California

Twenty students of the Holt School's Master of Corporate Communication and Technology program visited San Jose, California recently to get a real-life view of how communication technology works.

The students and Professors Greg Gardner and John Morrison visited Stanford University and the Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), Sun Microsystems, Intel, Napa Valley, Cisco Systems, Mercora and Fairmont Resorts.

"The most inspiring part of the trip to San Jose was meeting all of the executive committee members at each company," said MACCT student Ben Sargent. "I was amazed at the
diversity of each person regarding nationality, education and career path."

Shown left are Professor John Morrison, Professor Greg Gardner, Kelly Russ, Director of SLAC Communications Neil Calder and Ben Sargent at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Palo Alto, California.

"At each organization, the executives and communication professionals we met were quite generous with their time, and provided us with many opportunities to explore the effects of the new technologies on corporate communication processes," John said.

Greg said, "To be able to meet and speak with the executive leaders of organizations such as Intel, Cisco, Sun, Mecora, Fairmont and Beringer's was a truly unique learning experience for the students in the MACCT program."

"The trip was a terrific experience and one that will stay with me long after I graduate," Ben said.

During the month of June, Associate Professor of International Business Ilan Alon was the keynote speaker at the upcoming American Electronic Association conference and the U.S. China Business Summits being held in Orlando and Tampa. He also co-authored a recently published book titled Business and Management Education in China (World Scientific Publishing Co., Inc.). The book offers a unique collection of essays focused on the important social and economic changes affecting educational institutions in China. It provides an in-depth examination of the potential and obstacles for business and management education in the world’s second largest economy and most populated country.

Crummer School Adjunct Professor Harry W. Collison, Jr. recently published an article titled “Recovering 'Stigma' Damages in Mold-related Construction Defect Cases: Making the Property Owner Whole” in The Florida Bar Journal. The journal focuses on promoting the competence and public responsibility of lawyers. Collison teaches classes in real estate analysis at the Crummer School. Visit The Florida Bar Journal online to read the article.

Executive/Program Assistant for the Philanthropy Center Ginny Justice was recently appointed by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to serve a two-year term to the Board of Trustees at the Mennello Museum of American Art.

Associate Vice President of Information Technology Les Lloyd was invited as a guest presenter to the "Best Practices in Campus Security and Emergency Preparedness Conference." Held in Philadelphia, more than 80 session attendees learned about Rollins' emergency preparedness and communications efforts and lessons learned during last year's hurricane season.

Crummer Professor Barry Render has published his 34th and 35th textbooks, Operations Management, 8th Ed., and Principles of Operations Management, 6th Ed., both with his long-time publisher, Prentice Hall. In these new books, he and his coauthor, Professor Jay Heizer, themed the edition around service applications of operations management and used Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women and Children as a focus. He produced seven videos and case studies examining such issues as capacity planning, JIT, supply chain management, and quality at the facility. The video dealing with quality at the hospital was submitted to the annual Addy Awards and won first place from among 10,000 entries. Golfing legend Arnold Palmer wrote the foreword for both books. In appreciation for allowing the authors to get an insider look at the facility and its operations, the authors and publisher donated $50,000 to the Arnold Palmer Hospital.
