JULIE GARNER

HEAD WOMEN'S GOLF COACH

Julie Garner enters her tenth season as head coach of the women's golf program. This is Garner's third stint as head coach of the Tars as she took the reigns in 1984-87 and 1996-97 before rejoining the Tars five seasons ago. Garner has enjoyed unprecedented success in the last half of her decade with the Tars. Coming into this season, Coach Garner has led the Tars to three straight national championships. Rollins' dominance of Division II golf has been evident by the way they have destroyed the competition at the highest levels. The Tars have won the last three national championships by an average of 47 strokes. Along the way, Garner has earned a NGCA Division II Coach of the Year award (2003) and has picked up three straight Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year awards (2003, 2004, 2005). She has also coached a three-time NGCA Player of the Year award winner, Charlotte Campbell (2005, 2004, 2003) and numerous All-American award winners.

Garner graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in marketing and journalism. She originally attended Auburn University and was a part of their golf team for a year before transferring to Alabama . While at Alabama , she was a three-year letter winner and a team co-captain. After college, she won the 1984 Tennessee Women's Amateur Golf Championship. In 2001, she was chosen to represent Florida in the Southeastern Women's Amateur Team Championship played at Colonial Country Club in Memphis , Tennessee . She was the runner-up at the 2002 FWSGA Stroke Play Championship, and represented Florida in the 2002 Georgia-Florida matches.

Garner's team this season comes in ranked as they finished the last three seasons in Division II, number one. Rollins has won the last three national championships along with the last three Sunshine State Conference Championships. Last season the Garner led team enjoyed an unparalleled dominance of the National Championship. Rollins won the tournament by 35 strokes, and set a record with their four round team total of 1185 strokes for a +17 score. All five team member finished in the top eight individually. Mariana DeBiases placed the highest individually at third. Charlotte Campbell and Ulrika Ljungman tied for fourth. Charlotte Campbell and Mariana DeBiase both earned first team All-American honors. Ulrika Ljungman received second team All-American honors, and Vanessa Vela received Honorable Mention All-American honors.

During her first tenure, Garner led the Tars to a second place ranking at the end of the 1986-87 season and had three players qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships (the NCAA did not have a Division II tournament until 1996). She returned nine years later for one season in 1996-97 to lead the Tars to a second place ranking in Division II. She resigned in November 1997 to accept a position at Nike Golf, where she was involved with their women's golf division for two and a half years before returning to the Tars in 2000.

Garner and her husband, Tom, reside in the Winter Park area. A teaching professional in golf, Tom has spent time on both the PGA and Nike Tours, and is currently an instructor at the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy .
