ROLLINS COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Corie Kelly

Sophomore – Women's Swimming

Longwood, Fla.

Sophomore Corie Kelly proved to be the difference maker in the Rollins women's swim team's victory over arch rival Florida Southern last week, taking a pair of big wins. The Longwood, Florida native out kicked the field in the 200-yard freestyle, winning with a time of 2:04.67 and grabbing crucial points in a very tightly contested meet. Earlier in the season, it was the Mocs who won the 200 freestyle and captured the team title. Kelly's win, coupled with her victory in the 100 yard butterfly (1:03.55) propelled Rollins to the 104-101 win the their 2006 home finale. The team victory also gives the Tars momentum heading into the Sunshine State Invitational on February 24-26 at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center.

Mario Lombardo

Junior – Baseball

Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Junior hurler Mario Lombardo was dominating in his first start of 2006 last weekend. The right-hander held visiting Belmont Abbey in check throughout game two of the Tars doubleheader on Saturday, leading Rollins to the dramatic 1-0 win. Lombardo threw all seven innings, scattering four hits and allowing no runs to improve to 1-0 on the year. Utilizing a powerful fastball and solid breaking ball, Lombardo struckout a career best 13 batters on the night, at one point fanning five in a row. In the top of the seventh with the potential go ahead run on third, he sat down the final batter that allowed Rollins to take the win in their half of the seventh.

SOFTBALL TEAM TAKES TWO TO START 06

Last week:

Rollins 9, Webber International 0 (5 inn.)

Rollins 8, Webber International 0 (5 inn.)

Rollins vs. Palm Beach Atlantic PPD. (rain)

Record: 2-0, 0-0 SSC

It was a very successful debut for the new-look Rollins softball team as the Tars swept Webber International 9-0 and 8-0 last week at Lake Island Park.

A freshman stifled the Warriors and the seniors provided the offense in Rollins' dominating game one victory. Hurler Nicole Anderson (Brandon, Fla.) was nearly perfect, tossing a no hitter and allowing just two walks while striking out nine in five innings of work. At the plate, Kallie Jo Jones (Chandler, Okla.) blasted a two run homer in the second to give Rollins a 4-0 lead and fellow veteran Kelly Cruz (Winter Springs, Fla.) added an exclamation point with a grand slam in the fourth. Lauren Starcher (Winter Springs, Fla.) went 2-2 with a run scored while freshman Ashley East (Pace, Fla.) hit 2-3 with two runs in the game.

The night cap was more of the same as the Tars offense again shined in a 8-0 victory. Pitcher Ingrid Schumacher (Naples, Fla.) threw four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Rachel Brenneman (Cheshire, Conn.) came in to pitch a perfect fifth. East provided the fireworks with the bat, going 2-3 with four RBI and two runs scored after a fourth inning homer to straight away center field.

The Tars contest at Palm Beach Atlantic, scheduled for Saturday, February 4 was postponed due to rain, no make up date has been set.

The Rollins softball team will take with week off and will be back in action on Saturday, February 18 in a doubleheader at Eckerd. First pitch for game one is set for Noon in St. Petersburg.

BASEBALL GOES 3-2 IN BUSY FIRST WEEK

Last week:

Florida Tech 8, Rollins 0

Rollins 4, Belmont Abbey 3

Rollins 1, Belmont Abbey 0

Rollins 6, Belmont Abbey 5

Belmont Abbey 3, Rollins 2

Record: 3-2, 0-0 SSC

It was an up and down first week to the season as the Rollins baseball team sandwiched three victories between a week opening and week ending losses. In the opener, Florida Tech bested Rollins 8-0 in Melbourne on Wednesday. The Tars then took three against visiting Belmont Abbey in the friendly confines of Alfond Stadium during a rain-altered four game series.

The season began a little shaky for the Tars as they traveled to Florida Tech and couldn't get the bats to heat up in an 8-0 defeat. Brent Magnuson (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Kyle Harmon (Winter Park, Fla.) tallied the Tars lone two hits in the game with Harmon's coming in a pinch hit in the seventh. Starter Eduardo Chile (Miami, Fla.) suffered the loss, allowing eight hits and seven runs, four earned, in five innings on the hill as the Rollins fielders were charged with three errors on the day.

Friday's home opener with Belmont Abbey was rained out and forced the schools into doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. In game one on Saturday, the Tars came from behind twice and held on in the later innings for the 4-3 victory. Stefano Foggi (Evanston, Ill.) went 2-4 with two RBI to lead the Rollins bats in the game while Gene Howard (Nahant, Mass.) was 1-2 with two runs scored and an RBI on a solo shot to the scoreboard in right. Michael Eppich (Shaker Heights, Ohio) recorded the victory in relief, allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings. Starter David Nathanson went five solid innings, surrendering three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

The seven inning nightcap was dominated by both school's pitchers with Rollins coming out on top 1-0. Mario Lombardo (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) got the complete game, shutout victory, scattering five hits and striking out a career best 13. Howard went 3-3 to pace the Tars offense while Kevin Schnacke (Columbus, Ohio) drove in the games only run with a two out single in the bottom of the seventh.

Game one of Sunday's doubleheader was another closely contested game with the Tars again winning by a run, 6-5. Sophomore Gary Martoccio (Lutz, Fla.) blasted a three run dinger in the third and finished 1-3 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Tars at the plate. Tyler Hartman (Deltona, Fla.) hit 2-4 with an RBI while Magnuson came up big in the clutch, firing a pinch-hit, two run double to give Rollins the lead in the seventh. Bill Bradley (Orlando, Fla.) was credited with the victory on the mound, throwing three innings of relief, allowing one run and three hits.

Rollins ran out of late inning magic in the series finale as the Crusaders were able to break the tie in the top of the seventh and handed the Tars a 3-2 defeat. Foggi went 2-3 in the game with an RBI with Howard going 1-2 with a run batted in. Freshman lefty John Masklee (Totown, N.J.) suffered the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, in six and a third on the hill.

The Tars have another busy week ahead as they again will play five games over the next six days. They begin with a trip down I-4 to the University of Tampa on Tuesday, February 7. Due to construction of the Spartans home field, first pitch will be at 7 p.m. at Jack Russell Stadium, the former home of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Tars return home for the weekend for a four game set against Carson-Newman. Game times will be 7 p.m. on Friday, a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a noon game on Sunday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STILL UNDEFEATED AT 20-0

Last week:

Rollins 64, Florida Tech 30

Rollins 54, Saint Leo 46

Rollins 75, Eckerd 73

Record: 20-0, 11-0 SSC

Ranked #9 in USA TODAY /ESPN Division II poll - #7 in NCAA Division II South Region

The Rollins women's basketball team racked up another three victories last week and improved their record to an amazing 20-0 on the season. They are also 11-0 in Sunshine State Conference play and can clinch at least a share of the regular season title with a victory and Tampa loss this week. The Tars came out of their roughest stretch of the season relatively unscathed, as Rollins has played five games in the last 12 days, three of which were on the road.

After locking horns with Nova Southeastern just two days prior, the Tars came back on Monday to host Florida Tech in a key conference game. Freshman spark plug Jennifer Dyer (Wake Forest, N.C.) came off the bench and netted a career high 17 points to lead Rollins in the decisive 64-30 victory. Frontcourt mates Joslyn Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) and Randi Weiss (Kissimmee, Fla.) each put up 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds. The Tars out rebounded the visitors 51-46 and held Tech to just 19.7 percent shooting from the field while knocking down 35 percent from the floor themselves.

On Wednesday, Rollins traveled to Saint Leo for a Sunshine State Conference road test, winning 56-46. Junior forward Larissa McDonough (Ormond Beach, Fla.) was nearly unstoppable, scoring 19 points and gathering a game high 12 rebounds. Giles was the other Tar in double figures, going for 10 points while adding eight rebounds. Rollins struggled from the field, shooting just 27.9 percent, but their patented defense held the Lions to 15 first half points and enabled them to cruise to the win.

Saturday brought another road trip, this time to Eckerd College in St. Petersburg. It appeared to be another run away win as Rollins extended their lead to 20 points with seven minutes left in the second period. The Tritons began raining three's from all over the court and got to within one with just five ticks left. Dyer hit her free throw, but missed the second attempt to give EC life. Senior Sally Johnston (Winter Springs, Fla.) then saved the day with a steal in the final second to preserve a close Rollins victory. McDonough was again the Tars leading scorer, pouring in 22 points with two blocks and two steals on the defensive end. Giles added 16 points and 13 boards with point guard Jen Musgrove (Palm Bay, Fla.) netting 12.

Rollins takes a break from the SSC schedule and will host Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday, February 7 at 5:30 p.m. The Tars got the best of the Sailfish earlier in the year, winning 69-42 in West Palm Beach. On Saturday, Rollins will head to Boca Raton for a conference match-up with Lynn University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL STILL HOT WINNING SEVEN STRAIGHT

Last week:

Rollins 81, Florida Tech 77 (OT)

Rollins 76, Saint Leo 49

Rollins 60, Eckerd 55

Record: 16-5, 9-2 SSC

The Rollins men hoopsters are red hot right now, winners of their last seven straight. The Tars have moved into a tie atop the Sunshine State Conference standings with Lynn, their opponent this Saturday. The Blue and Gold pulled out a dramatic 81-77 overtime victory against a determined Florida Tech on Monday, ran past Saint Leo 76-49 on Wednesday and out lasted Eckerd 60-55 on Saturday to put themselves in position for a possible regional berth.

The Tars appeared to have Florida Tech's number early in the second half of the two school's Monday match-up, but a furious comeback by the Panthers forced an extra period. The Tars manned up during the extra frame and out scored Tech 10-7 for the exciting 81-77 victory. Four Tars reached double figures in scoring, led by John Thinnes (Cincinnati, Ohio) with 22 while also getting a game best 11 rebounds. Deon Troupe (St. Petersburg, Fla.) added 16 with Jonny Reibel (Chicago, Ill.) putting up 13. Local product Isaac Codrey (Winter Park, Fla.) continued his solid play coming off the bench, netting 12.

Wednesday, the Tars headed to Saint Leo, the site of this year's conference tournament, for a match-up with the Lions. Right from the opening tip, the Tars took a 3-0 lead and never looked back. They led the entire contest and as by as many as 37 late in the second half to cruise to a 76-49 victory. Reibel with 14 led a very balanced scoring attack as all but on Rollins player scored at least four points. Troupe and Kevin Hogan (Pensacola, Fla.) each added 11 for Rollins.

The week ended with a huge game at Eckerd on Saturday that weighed heavily on the SSC standings. Rollins got 22 points from St. Pete native Deon Troupe, including a crucial trey that swung the momentum the Tars way late in the second period. Reibel and Jon Smith (Hamilton, Ohio) each put up nine points. Rollins sizzled the nets in the second half, hitting 66 percent from the field and 52.8 percent for the game while holding EC to just 34 percent shooting.

The victory sets up an even bigger match-up on Saturday as Rollins will travel to Boca Raton for a tussle with fellow SSC leader Lynn University at 7:30 p.m. The Knights were the last team to beat the Tars, scoring a 87-66 win earlier in the year. Rollins will first play host to non-conference opponent Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday, February 7 in Winter Park with tip off set for 7:30 p.m.

SWIM TEAMS SWEEP FLORIDA SOUTHERN IN HOME FINALE

CORRECTION: Freshman swimmer Amanda Terr (Pennsburg, Pa./Perkioen) was inadvertently omitted from the Fall 2005 Athletic Director's honor roll. The list honors Rollins student-athletes who earn a 3.2 GPA or higher during the semester.

Last week:

Men: Rollins 118, Florida Southern 60

Women: Rollins 104, Florida Southern 101

The Rollins men showed their power and cruised to a 118-60 victory while the Tars women fought for a 104-101 win over Florida Southern on Saturday. The men won all but one event while the women posted seven wins in a very successful senior day.

The women were led by four swimmers who each tallied a pair of victories. Andrea Bartman scored big in the distance events, winning both the 1000 yard and 500 yard events. She stopped the clock at 11:35.35 in the 1000 and came back to win the 500 in 5:39.82. Freshman Jessica Rothbiend won the 200 yard IM in 2:19.62 and the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:09.96.

Corie Kelly also won two events with her victory in the 200 freestyle proving to be the difference maker. She out touched a pair of Florida Southern swimmers, winning in a time of 2:04.67, just .02 seconds ahead of the runner-up. In the Tars previous match-up with the Mocs, the event ended the other way around and Florida Southern took home the team victory. Kelly was also victorious in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:03.55. Amanda Terr was also a winner for Rollins, taking the 50 yard freestyle in 26:40.

In the men's competition, it was all Rollins as the Tars scored a victory in all but one event. Five Tars each had a hand in three victories on the day. Senior Bill Burris, in his last meet at the Alfond Pool, swam a leg in the Tars winning 400 medley relay team, who won in 3:44.71 and the Rollins 400 freestyle relay that stopped the clock at 3:23.42. He was also a winner in his specialty, the 50 yard freestyle in 22.79. Carson Nicely swam a leg in each of the two relays and also took home a win in the 100 freestyle in 49.92. Trevor Hughes won the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 54.66 while also swimming a leg in each of the two relays. Chris Sparks did his part in the 400 medley relay and also won a pair of individual events. He took the 200 IM easily, winning by eight seconds in 2:05.78 and also was a winner in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.88. Jonathan Mastin was the fourth leg on the Tars winning 400 yard freestyle team.

Jeff Mueller stood atop the podium in two events on the day, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:51.46 and the 500 freestyle in 5:06.62. Daniel Paulling took care of the 1000 freestyle for Rollins, posting a winning time of 10:41.43.

Saturday's event concluded the dual meet season as the Tars will now prepare for their championship meets. Rollins will be back in the pool on February 24-26 at the Sunshine State Invitational, hosted by Rollins at the I-Drive YMCA Aquatic Center.

MEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO UCF IN HEARTBREAKING OPENER

Last week:

UCF 5, Rollins 4

Rollins vs. Palm Beach Atlantic PPD. (rain)

Cross town rivals Rollins and UCF traded blows all afternoon and in the end it was the Golden Knights who came out on top 5-4 in men's tennis action on Thursday. Rollins falls to 0-1 on the season while UCF moves to 2-1.

Seniors Carlos Custodio and David Tafur got the Tars started off on the right foot, downing Norman Alcantara and Sinan Sudas 9-7 at No. 1 singles. UCF, however, went on to grab the next two doubles points and took a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Sebastian Delgado and Alamgir Wali were 8-5 winners in the No. 2 match over Adrian Tan and Jonathan Gomez while Brock Sakey and Jimmy Roesch defeated Brian Compton and Michael Schwartz 8-4 in the No. 3 slot.

In No. 1 singles, Custodio dropped the first set to Sudas 3-6, but bounced back in a big way, taking the next two 6-4, 6-2 for a Rollins win. Tan, playing in his first collegiate match, was a straight set winner, taking Wali 6-3, 6-2 in No. 3 singles. Schwartz scored the Tars fourth point, winning at the No. 6 position 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-5 over Roesch.

Alcantara and Tafur battled at No. 2 singles with UCF's Alcantara winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 while Sakey downed Brian Compton 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 position. The match decider proved to be the No. 4 singles match between the Tars' Gomez and UCF's Delgado. Delgado took the first set 6-3 and Gomez evened play with a 6-3 victory in the second and was up a break in the third, but Delgado stepped it up down the stretch and scored the 7-5 winner, grabbing the win for UCF.

Rollins' match at Palm Beach Atlantic was postponed due to the threat of thunderstorms; no make-up date has been set. The Tars will next hit the courts on Saturday, February 11 when they will host Armstrong Atlantic at the Martin Tennis Complex. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
