ROLLINS COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Gene Howard

Junior - Baseball

Nahant, Mass.

Junior third baseman Gene Howard (Nahant, Mass.) had a monster week at the plate for the Tars, going 6-12 with three runs scored and seven RBI. He blasted three doubles in the Tars doubleheader sweep over St. Thomas, including the go ahead RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning. He is now hitting .420 on the year with 11 RBI to lead the Tars.

Nicole Anderson

Freshman – Softball

Brandon, Fla.

Freshman hurler Nicole Anderson has been nothing short of spectacular in her two outings for the Tars, winning both games and allowing just one hit. Last week against Eckerd she threw a complete game shutout and surrendered one hit and one walk while striking out 12. On the year, she has thrown 12 innings and rolled up 21 strikeouts.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CAPTURES SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE CROWN

Last week:

Rollins 53, Tampa 46

Rollins 53, Barry 33

Season record: 24-0, 11-0 SSC – regular season champions

Glenn Wilkes, Jr. and his Rollins College women's basketball team improved their record to 24-0 last week and captured the outright Sunshine State Conference regular season championship; their 10 th in program history. The crown is also their sixth since the 1998-99 season with the Tars going 200-40 during the span. They are currently ranked ninth in NCAA Division II and fourth in the South Region standings.

Rollins is now assured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Tournament, hosted by Saint Leo University on March 1-5. The Tars will be in search of their third straight SSC Tournament title and the automatic berth into the NCAA Division II tournament on the line.

The Tars began the week with a 63-46 thrashing of second place Tampa on Wednesday with Rollins playing their first game since the potential season-ending injury to second leading scorer Larissa McDonough (Ormond Beach, Fla.). Sophomore point guard Jennifer Musgrove (Palm Bay, Fla.) filled the void by pouring in a career best 20 points and gathering seven rebounds. Joslyn Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) notched a double-double, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds while Randi Weiss (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Jennifer Dyer (Wake Forest, N.C.) added 12 points and 10 points respectively. Rollins' dominating defense controlled the game as they held the Spartans to just 28 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers.

Forward Joslyn Giles scored the Tars first three points in the game, all on free throws, and surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career. She becomes just the 17 th Rollins women's basketball player to enter the 1,000 point club and did so in just three seasons as she played her freshman year at Stetson.

Barry University visited the Alfond Sports Center on Saturday and Rollins had to overcome an anemic offensive night to record 46-33 victory and seal up the SSC crown. Dyer was the lone Tars in double figures as she put up 12 points coming off the bench. Musgrove and Rachael Workman (Northhampton, Mass.) each tallied seven points and seven rebounds. The Tars held the Bucs to just 23 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers, but were only able to muster 29 percent shooting from the floor and were tagged with 16 miscues.

The Tars will conclude the regular season this week and will look to complete Rollins' first ever perfect season in basketball. They will host Florida Southern in the home finale at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday February 22 then head to Nova Southeastern for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, February 25.

MEN'S BASKETBALL IN LINE TO TAKE SSC TITLE

Last week:

Tampa 87, Rollins 81

Rollins 58, Barry 42

Season Record: 19-6; 11-3 SSC – First place

The Tars had their nine game winning streak snapped by Tampa on Wednesday, but bounced back for a win over Barry and got some help around the leage to take over sole possession of first place in the Sunshine State Conference. Rollins is a half game ahead of Lynn and a full game ahead of Nova Southeastern heading into the schedule's final week.

With a win over Florida Southern on Wednesday, the Tars would grab at least a share of the Sunshine State Conference title and all but assure themselves a spot in the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Rollins was riding high coming into Wednesday's home match up with Tampa, having won 13 of their 16 contests, including a huge road win at Lynn the previous Saturday. Rollins fell behind early and fought back late, but came up short, falling 87-81. John Thinnes (Cincinnati, Ohio) established a new Rollins record in the game, hitting nine three pointers, which is a new Tars single game best. He shot 10-19 from the floor and 9-15 from long range for a career best 31 points. Isaac Codrey (Winter Park, Fla.) continued his stellar play coming off the bench as he added 19 points and a team high nine rebounds to the Tars effort. Kevin Hogan (Pensacola, Fla.) caught fire late and notched 13 points with Jonny Reibel (Chicago, Ill) adding eight. After an abysmal 39 percent shooting in the first half, the Tars shot 50 percent in the second period, but UT hit 54 percent and pulled out the win.

After the game Rollins learned Florida Southern had beat Lynn to keep the Tars tied atop the Sunshine State Conference standings.

Rollins hosted Barry in another key Sunshine State Conference match-up on Saturday with Rollins taking a 58-42 victory. Isaac Codrey again was tough off the bench, leading Rollins with 19 points and five rebounds. Deon Troupe (St. Petersburg, Fla.) put up 14 points with Reibel adding 10. The Tars out-rebounded the Buccaneers 34-25 in the game and held them to just 27 percent shooting in the second half. The win, coupled with a Tampa victory over Nova Southeastern, kept Rollins alone atop the conference and set up Wednesday's big home finale.

Rollins will look to wrap up a share of the SSC title on Wednesday, February 22 at home against rival Florida Southern. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The will finish up the regular season on Saturday, February 25 at Nova Southeastern in a game that will likely decide the number one seed in the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Tournament.

SOFTBALL IMPROVES TO 4-0 BEHIND SOLID PITCHING

Last week:

Rollins 2, Eckerd 0

Rollins 11, Eckerd 0

Season Record: 4-0

The Rollins College softball team improved their record to 4-0 on the season after sweeping a doubleheader against the Tritons of Eckerd College.   The Tars have yet to give up a run this season as they won game one 2-0 and took game two 11-0 in six innings.

In the first game, freshman pitcher Nicole Anderson (Brandon, Fla.) threw a one-hitter for her second victory of her young career.   She allowed only one walk while striking out 12.   Senior shortstop Kelly Cruz (Winter Springs, Fla.) led the Tars' batters, going 2-3 and knocking in the Tars' two runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning.   With junior Devon Kontos (Orlando, Fla.) and freshman Ashley East (Pace, Fla.) on base, Cruz calmly hit a single to left, scoring both runners.   Anderson then stepped into the circle in the bottom of the seventh and put the Tritons batters out in order to end the game.   Also grabbing hits for the Tars were sophomores Jennifer Olsen (Winter Haven, Fla.) and Ingrid Schumacher (Naples, Fla.).   Eckerd pitcher Amy McGathey had a no-hitter going against the Tars until the fifth inning when Olsen sent a two-out single up the middle.   Freshman Danielle Sedoris had the lone hit for the Tritons in the sixth inning.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Tars' bats lit up Eckerd's pitching for 13 hits and 11 runs, while the combined pitching of Schumacher and freshman Rachel Brenneman (Cheshire, Conn.) allowed only one hit while striking out seven.   Junior Stacy Sanders (Orlando, Fla.) and freshman Jamie Rausch (Ocoee, Fla.) both hit their first home runs of the season, coming on back-to-back at bats in the five run sixth inning.   Olsen, Sanders, Rausch, and sophomore Rachel Almengual (Odessa, Fla.) each had two hits in the game while junior catcher Victoria Rudolph (Titusville, Fla.) went 3-4 with one RBI.   Olsen stole two bases in the game, for a team leading four stolen bases on the season.

With the wins, the Tars improve their record to 4-0 on the season.   They have allowed only three hits and no runs so far this season.

Rollins will return to action on Saturday, February 25, when they travel to Tampa for a weekend match-up with conference foe Tampa.   The first pitch of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Due to darkness, the third set was moved to the Martin Tennis Complex and a filled to capacity Copland Tennis Stadium. The two players battled back and forth throughout the high energy set with Gaetjens winning 6-4 and getting West Florida the victory.

After dropping three straight heartbreakers to some of the nation's best teams to open the season, the Rollins men's tennis team got back on track with a 9-0 win over Webber International on Wednesday. The Tars improve to 1-3 on the year while Webber falls to 1-3.

BASEBALL SWEEPS ST. THOMAS IN WEEKEND SERIES

Last week:

Rollins 3, Bryant 1

Rollins 11, St. Thomas 3

Rollins 7, St. Thomas 4

Season record: 9-4

Tars coach Jon Sjogren gave his former squad a proper welcome Thursday night, as his Tars handed the Bryant Bulldogs a 3-1 loss.   The Tars (7-4) turned five Bryant (0-4) errors into three runs.   Those three runs turned out to be plenty for the Tars staff.   Juniors David Nathanson (1-0) and Jon Wano combined for a six hit, one unearned run performance.

The win was particularly gratifying for coach Jon Sjogren as it was the first meeting with the club he managed for the last 15 seasons.   Over those 15 seasons, Sjogren led the Bulldogs to 360 wins.

Junior shortstop, Ryan McKenzie had the Tars' only RBI.   McKenzie was 0-3 with a RBI ground out in the second inning.   Junior third baseman, Gene Howard was 1-4 with a run scored.   Freshman designated hitter, Ryan Maddern went 1-4 on the night with a run scored.   And freshman Anthony Soto was 1-3.   Rollins was out-hit in the game by the Bulldogs, 6-5.

Starting pitcher, David Nathanson had yet another solid outing for the Tars.   The junior struck out eight batters over seven innings of work.   He allowed only six hits, mostly on the infield, and one unearned run on the evening.   Nathanson was able to lower his ERA to a stingy 1.43.   Jonathan Wano worked the eighth and ninth innings for his first save on the season.   He struck out three and walked none.

Rollins had their best offensive output of the season, totaling 21 hits in a doubleheader sweep over St. Thomas on Sunday. The Tars won the opener 11-3 then came from behind for a 7-4 victory in the night cap. The wins improve Rollins' record to 9-4 on the season while St. Thomas falls to 6-5.

The Tars were led on the day by Gene Howard who hit 5-8 with seven RBI and five runs scored in the two games. Leadoff man Gary Martoccio was 4-6 with six runs scored and Ryan McKenzie went 3-6 with a pair of RBI.

Senior hurler Eduardo Chile had a great outing in game one, throwing seven solid innings, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out 10. Bill Bradley came on to pitch the final two innings, surrendering just one hit.

Michael Eppich improved to 3-0 on the year, scoring the game two victory in relief. He had two innings on the hill, allowing just one hit. Mario Lombardo started the game, scattering seven hits and allowing four runs in five innings of work.

In game one, the Tars got one in the first inning, but blew the game open in the third with a six run, six hit inning. Howard had a two RBI double to the wall in the frame with Rollins manufacturing the other four with solid base running. The Bobcats got one back in their half of the fourth, but the hosts added three more in the sixth with Howard's second two RBI double of the game and a Stefano Foggi sac fly to make the score 10-1. Saint Thomas scored two in the top half of the seventh and Rollins added another in the bottom of the frame behind a McKenzie double down the left field line.

The Bobcats came out firing in the night cap and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. Rollins made the score 2-1 after their at-bat as Tyler Hartman sent a screeching double to the right field fence that plated Martoccio. STU scored another in the third, but Rollins got it back in the fourth after Brent Magnuson smacked a double and was brought around with a Rob Cloar single to make the count 3-2. The Bobcats manufactured a run in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead only to see Rollins fight back and knot the score with another Howard RBI double and a Jason Cutlip RBI single. Eppich came on to shut down the visitors in the sixth and set up the wild Rollins half of the inning. Back to back line outs to right field put the Tars in a hole, but Martoccio reached and stole second and Hartman was plunked to put runners on first and second. Howard then worked a full count and poked a single to center that scored Martoccio to put Rollins ahead. Foggi came up and cleared the paths with a two RBI triple to right and put it away for Rollins. Eppich cleaned up the ninth and gave Rollins their third straight win.

The Tars will return to action on Tuesday, February 21 when they will host defending SSC and national champion, Florida Southern at the Alfond Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.

STUDENT-ATHLETES RAISE MORE THAN $5,000 FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER

Student-athletes and the Greeks faced off in a tricycle race around the Alfond Sports Center parking lot on Saturday in the first annual “Laps for Leukemia.” The event was all about endurance as 10 teams of five had a relay race to see who could do the most laps in one hour. There was also a dunk tank and free food courtesy of Domino's Pizza and Chick-Fil-a. The Rollins baseball team was also manning the grill with hamburgers and hotdogs.

By the end of the event, the Rollins students raised more than $5,000 dollars for St. Jude's Children's hospital. The Rollins Athletic Department and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee would sincerely like to thank all of the sponsors who made the event a success:
