ROLLINS COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Charlotte Campbell

Senior – Women's Golf

Heathrow, Fla.

Rollins senior women's golfer Charlotte Campbell (Heathrow, Fla.) is in the midst of fantastic final year in collegiate golf as she has led the Tars to three straight victories this spring. At the Lady Moc Classic in Lakeland, Campbell fired rounds of 72-75-75 and brought home medalist honors while her Tars posted a 12 shot victory over the field. The win was her second of the season and the Tars third. She also had a solid outing at her last Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational, shooting 74-78-79 and finishing in seventh place, leading Rollins to their second straight win in the event. She is the three-time defending national player of the year and is looking to lead Rollins to their fourth straight national championship this year.

MEN'S BASKETBALL ENDS SEASON IN REGIONAL SEMI-FINAL

Last week:

Rollins 63, Alabama-Huntsville 58

Montevallo 81, Rollins 68

Final Record: 24-8

The clock struck midnight on Rollins' improbable run through the 2005-06 season as the Tars were bounced out of the NCAA South Region Tournament, but not without some fireworks. Sixth seeded Rollins held off a tough third seeded Alabama-Huntsville squad in the tourney opener and advanced to the final 32 in the nation. The Tars then ran into a solid second seeded team from Montevallo and ultimately fell in the region semifinals. Picked to finish seventh in the SSC preseason poll, Rollins put together one of the most special seasons under Tom Klusman, finishing 24-8.

The Sunshine State Conference regular season champion Tars kept the momentum that got them the SSC Tournament title last week rolling into their first round game with Alabama-Huntsville. Rollins jumped out to a quick lead and had to hold off two Chargers comebacks to preserve the 63-58 victory. Junior John Thinnes was hot for the Blue and Gold as he pumped in 26 points on 9-14 shooting, 4-7 from three point range, to pace the Tars offense. Jonny Reibel added 15 points and six rebounds with Chauncey Gibbs also gathering six boards. Huntsville tied the score at 56 all with 90 seconds to go, but Isaac Codrey drained a three from the corner on the Tars next possession to put Rollins up, only to have UAH answer with a dunk on the other end. Thinnes then sealed it up with a jumper and two free throws in the final seconds to give Rollins the win.

Rollins amazing run was stopped by a hot University of Montevallo team as they got past the Tars in an 81-68 shootout. Freshman Greg Sweeney came off the bench and put in 16 points and pull down seven rebounds. Reibel was again solid from the point, adding 13 points and six rebounds. The Falcons shot 50 percent in the first half while Rollins was only able to connect on 33 percent, giving UM a 20 point lead a the break. Rollins cut into the lead in the second half, but couldn't overcome the big deficit and fell by 13.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DOWNED IN NCAA FIRST ROUND

Last week:

Florida Gulf Coast 48, Rollins 46 (OT)

Final Record: 28-2

The Rollins women's basketball team, coming off a the schools first perfect regular season at 26-0, was stunned by Florida Gulf Coast in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to the Eagles 48-46 in overtime. The Tars just couldn't get things to go their way as they shot just 25 percent from the floor. The defense was up to the task, holding FGCU to just 20 percent shooting, but in the end it was free throws that did the Tars in.

Point guard Jennifer Musgrove led the Tars with a double-double, netting 13 points and pulling down 11 boards. Forwards Rachel Workman and Joslyn Giles each added seven points while Sally Johnston and Larissa McDonough snagged 13 and 11 rebounds, respectively. The Tars out rebounded the Eagles 61-53 in the game.

With a minute to go in regulation and Rollins down two, Johnston stole the ball and quickly got it up court to Musgrove who was fouled with 34 seconds remaining. She calmly sank both free throws to tie the score at 36 apiece. The Tars then forced a shot clock violation and got the ball back with four seconds to go, but a Musgrove attempt was off the mark and sent the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Rollins jumped out to a 40-36 advantage over the first minute of play. The Eagles tied the score only to have Johnston put the Tars back on top with a jumper. FGCU the rattled off six unanswered and took a four point lead with under a minute to play. Musgrove hit a lay-up to pull Rollins to within two and Johnston drained a jumper to tie the score with just nine seconds to go. The Eagles missed on their attempt and Rollins gathered the rebound, but FGCU stole an errant pass and was fouled with just 0.2 seconds showing on the clock. The Eagles point guard hit both free throws and bounced a stunned Rollins squad out of the NCAA Tournament, 48-46.

Rollins has their winning streak snapped by Northern Kentucky in the first game of the Rebel Games on Monday, but began a new one with a 3-1 over Wayne State in their nightcap.

In the opening game, freshman Nicole Anderson got the start in the circle, allowing six hits and four runs. Sophomore Ingrid Schumacher took over for Anderson in the third, giving up only one hit and striking out three to finish the game. At the plate, six different Tars were able to get a hit in the game, with freshman Jamie Rausch and senior Kelly Cruz recording the two RBI in the seventh inning.   The Tars bounced back from only their second loss of the season by defeating Wayne State 3-1 in game two of the evening. Schumacher pitched all six innings, allowing only four hits and striking out four. Freshman Ashley East, senior Kallie Jo Jones and Cruz all notched two hits in the game, with East recording the Tars' third triple of the season.

Rollins then hosted Salem International on Wednesday and easily swept two (10-1 and 2-0) as the Tars out-hit the Tigers 13-3 on the evening and freshman pitcher Nicole Anderson recorded her second no-hitter of the season in game two.

Schumacher was in the circle for the Tars in game one, allowing only three hits and one run and striking out six in five innings for her seventh win of the season. Senior Kallie Jones led the Tars' at the plate, going 3-3 with one run and three RBI. All three of Jones' hits went for doubles. Also notching multiple hits in the game were juniors Stacy Sanders and Randi Irwin. The Tars out hit the Tigers 8-3 in the game and exploded for five hits and seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the 10-1 victory. The second game started as a pitcher's dual as Anderson and Kyanna Cape held the batters hitless through three innings. The Tars broke through in the bottom of the fourth and recorded three hits, singles by Jones and freshman Jamie Rausch and a double by senior Kelly Cruz, and one run. The Tars picked up another run in the bottom of the fifth and Anderson held strong in the circle, picking up her eighth win of the season. Jones was the lone Tar to notch two hits in the game, going 2-3 and scoring a run. Junior Victoria Rudolph (Titusville, Fla.) scored the second run for the Tars.

The weekend brought a home SSC series against Eckerd and with a combination of consistent pitching and hot bats, the Tars swept the Tritons three games to none. The Tars won game one on Friday night 3-0 and then returned on Saturday to throw two no-hitters, taking down the Tritons 9-0 in game one and 6-0 in game two.

In the Friday night game, freshman Nicole Anderson and sophomore Ingrid Schumacher combined to allow only three hits and no runs in seven innings. Six different Tars were able to get a hit off of Triton pitcher Jenn Barnes, scoring three runs to grab the opening game of the series 3-0. Sophomore Jennifer Olsen opened the game with a lead-off triple, her second of the season and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Rachel Almengual. Victoria Rudolph drew a walk with the bases loaded, sending Kallie Jones home for the Tars second run of the first inning. In the third inning, junior Stacy Sanders sent a double to left field, sending freshman Jamie Rausch across home plate for the Tars final run of the game. Schumacher came on for Anderson in the fifth inning and earned her first save of the season, allowing no hits and one walk in three innings of work.

The teams returned to Lake Island Park for a double header on Saturday and Rollins held the Tritons hitless all day. Schumacher pitched the first game and walked only two batters while striking out six for her first complete no hitter of the season. Alemengual and senior Kelly Cruz both had two hits in the game, with Cruz going 2-3 with two runs scored and four RBI. Sanders hit her third home run of the season in the second inning, a three run shot to left center field.   The Tars opened with four runs in the first inning and five in the second to grab the early 9-0 lead and held on behind the pitching of Schumacher to win in five innings.   Anderson returned to pitch the second game of the day, walking only one batter and striking out 12. The Tars' bats were hot, as they were able to get 11 hits off Tritons pitcher Barnes, including a triple by Jones in the first and doubles by Alemengual in the sixth and two from Rudolph, one to lead off the second inning and one in the fifth, scoring Cruz from second base.

The winning continued for the Rollins College softball team as they defeated No. 17 Carson-Newman College 5-0 in game one of the double header on Sunday afternoon and 4-3 in game two. The Tars improve to 22-2 on the season while the Lady Eagles fall to 17-7.

The first game saw the Tars use their pitching strength to power past their opponents. Freshman Nicole Anderson pitched a one-hitter while walking only one batter and striking out eight. At the plate, senior Kelly Cruz led the Tars, going 2-3 with two RBI. Senior Kallie Jones, sophomores Jennifer Olsen and Rachel Almengual   and freshman Jamie Rausch also registered hits in the game, with Almengual hitting a two-run double in the Tars three-run second inning.   The second game saw the Tars go up by two runs only to give up three to the visitors in the later innings. Rollins was down one run in the bottom of the seventh and behind the bat of Ingrid Schumacher pulled out the 4-3 victory. Schumacher pitched the first six innings for the Tars allowing eight hits and three runs. Anderson came on for Schumacher in the seventh to attempt to keep the Eagle's advantage to only one run. With runners on second and third and no outs, Anderson remained calm and put the next three batters out in order, preserving the one run deficit. Rollins came to bat in the bottom of the seventh and Almengual immediately singled to left field and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jones then grounded out to the pitcher, Rausch was intentionally walked and Cruz popped up to the shortstop, leaving runners on first and second and two out. The runners advanced one base on a passed ball with Schumacher at the plate. Schumacher then singled home the winning runs, giving the Tars the 4-3 victory.

Rollins will waste no time and return to the field on Monday, March 13 to host Spring Arbor for a double header at 6:00 p.m. at Lake Island Park .

BASEBALL TAKES TWO OF THREE IN BASEBALL WEEK

Last week:

Pittsburgh 4, Rollins 0

Rollins 16, Sacred Heart 9

Rollins 6, St. Joseph's 2

The Tars were the proud host of the 58 th Annual Rollins College Baseball Week Tournament last week which saw the likes of Pittsburgh, Boston College, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph's and Bethune Cookman take the field at Alfond Stadium. Rollins gained momentum going into the heart of their schedule as they went 2-1 during the tournament.

The weekend didn't start out Rollins' way as they were shutout by the University of Pittsburgh, 4-0. The Tars held their own against the Division I squad, but couldn't get the bats going all night. Rollins could only muster three hits against the Panthers, while Pitt smacked 12 hits off of four Tar pitchers.

Junior starting pitcher Jonathan Wano pitched well during his seven innings but couldn't get the run support. Wano gave up four runs, only three of which were earned, on nine hits while striking out five and walking five in seven innings of work. Tyler Hartman, Steve Mannenbach and Rob Cloar were the only Tars to get hits off of the Panthers staff.

The Rollins College Tars broke out of a four game losing streak with a 16-9 victory over Sacred Heart University in the 58 th Annual Rollins College Baseball Week. The Tars slugged out a season high 16 runs on 16 hits. Junior starting pitcher David Nathanson didn't seem to need the support as he went seven strong innings, striking out 11, and giving up just two unearned runs.

The Tars got a great effort from their entire offensive unit. Rollins came into the game with their team batting average hovering around the .250 mark. However, the Tars' bats came alive against the Pioneers as they crushed 16 hits out against the SHU staff. Sophomore third baseman Kevin Schnacke led the way for the Tars, going 3-5 with a run scored and a RBI. Sophomore second baseman Gary Martoccio was 2-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Freshman outfielder Tyler Hartman went 2-4 with a run scored and a RBI. And senior Rob Cloar went 1-5 with his first home run of the season.

Starter David Nathanson was brilliant the entire evening. The junior gave up two unearned runs in the second inning, but those would be the only two the Pioneers would get off of him the rest of the night. Nathanson went seven innings giving up only three hits while striking out 11 and walking only one.

Rollins College got its second straight victory in the final game of the 58 th Annual Rollins College Baseball Week, with a 6-2 win over Saint Joseph 's. The Tars (12-9) got a quality outing from their senior ace, Eduardo Chile. Chile went 6.1 innings striking out six and giving up two runs on six hits. The Rollins bats came alive for the second straight game and connected for nine hits.

The Tars were led offensively by junior left fielder Gene Howard. Howard went 2-5 on the day with two RBI and a stolen base. Sophomore Gary Martoccio and freshman Tyler Hartman each went 2-4 with a double. Sophomore first baseman, Steffano Foggi went 1-3 with a RBI and a run scored.

Senior Eduardo Chile had a nice day on the mound for the Tars. Chile got his second win on the season, going six quality innings pitched on the day. Chile gave up two earned runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking four. Junior Jonathan Wano worked 2.2 innings, striking out four men and keeping the Hawks hitless, en route to his second save of the season.

Originally created by legendary Rollins coach Joe Justice in 1948 as an opportunity for the Tars to face some nationally prominent teams in early season competition, Baseball Week has evolved into a much anticipated stop on the Florida tour for Division I schools. Baseball Week has always included three top Division I programs along with Rollins. In 2006, the tournament included five Division I programs and Rollins. Bethune-Cookman, Boston College , Pittsburgh , Sacred Heart and Saint Joseph 's all challenged Rollins for the coveted Baseball Week crown.

The University of Pittsburgh won the Baseball Week crown this season as they finished with a record of 5-2 during the week. Rollins finished 2-1 during the week and Boston College went 3-2.

The Tars will return to action on Monday March 13, when they will welcome Bentley University into Alfond Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
