SOFTBALL WINS SSC SERIES OVER #8 BARRY; 6-3 IN ANOTHER BUSY WEEK

Last week:

Rollins 9, Spring Arbor 0
Merrimack 1, Rollins 0
Rollins 5, Merrimack 1
Barry 1, Rollins 0
Rollins 3, Barry 1
Rollins 2, Barry 1
Rollins 13, Southern New Hampshire 2

Season record: 28-5

The Rollins softball team improved to 28-5 on the season after going 6-3 in their second straight nine-game week. The stretch was highlighted by the Tars series victory over eighth ranked and Sunshine State Conference foe Barry University.

The week started with a sweep over Spring Arbor on Monday, 4-1 in game one and 9-0 in the nightcap. Freshman pitcher Nicole Anderson (Brandon, Fla.), the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week, got the start in the circle in game one allowing four hits, one run and one walk while striking out 10 batters. The Tars gave up the first run of the game in the third inning after the leadoff hitter Lindsay Adamcyzk walked and then advanced to second on Jenna Titler's bunt single. Cougars pitcher Janna Klassen stepped to the plate and sent a double to center field scoring Adamcyzk. Anderson then struck out the next three batters, ending the inning. In the bottom of the fourth the Tars loaded the bases for sophomore Ingrid Schumacher (Naples, Fla.) and she sent a shot over the left field fence for her first home run of the season, giving Rollins a 4-1 lead. That was all the offense the Tars would need, as Anderson held the Cougars to only two more hits, recording her thirteenth win of the season.

Freshman Rachel Brenneman got the start in game two, giving up only two hits and no runs or walks and striking out six for her third win of the season. Rollins out-hit the Cougars 8-2 in the game with senior Kelly Cruz and sophomore Ingrid Schumacher leading the way. Cruz went 1-1 with a double, two runs scored, two RBI and two walks in the game, while Schumacher notched two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Also recording hits in the game were Rachel Almengual, Jamie Rausch, Devon Kontos and Kallie Jones with two, including two runs scored. The Tars scored two runs in the each of the first three innings and three in the fourth to get the 9-0 victory.

The game two win gave Rollins head coach Michelle Frew her 300th career victory at the helm of the Tars program.

The Tars the split a doubleheader with Merrimack on Wednesday, falling 1-0 in the opener, but coming back to win 5-1 in game two. Jen Olsen led the Rollins bats, going 2-5 with a run scored and a run batted in on the evening. Ashley East and Amanda DeFilipo each batted 1-3 with a run scored and RBI. Nicole Anderson suffered the loss in game one, scattering four hits and surrendering one run while striking out seven. Ingrid Schumacher pitched beautifully in game two as she allowed five hits and one run with six strikeouts.

The opener was an offensive struggle as neither team could get rolling. The Warriors scored their run in the third as Otto walked, then advanced to third after a Rollins error and eventually stole home. The Tars threatened in the fourth as Jamie Rauch hammered a two out double and Kelly Cruz drew a walk, but both were left stranded.

Rollins blew game two open in the third as back-to-back singles by DeFilipo and Olsen put two on with one out. After a Rollins strikeout, Kallie Jones knocked a single to left that got between the fielder's legs and rolled to the wall, allowing both DeFilipo and Olsen to score, putting the hosts up 2-0. In the Tars fourth, Schumacher rapped a one-out double, followed by an East RBI double to make the score 3-0. DeFilipo hit an RBI grounder to put Rollins up 4-0 before Olsen blasted a double to center field that scored Devon Kontos and gave Rollins the 5-0 advantage. The Warriors stranded a runner in each of the fifth and sixth innings and got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Stephanie Simon led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. That would be all Merrimack would get, however, as the Tars held on for the victory.

The weekend brought a huge three game set with Sunshine State Conference foe and eighth ranked Barry University. The Tars couldn’t get the bats heated in the opener and lost, but posted a doubleheader sweep on Saturday to win the series.

In the series opener, the Buccaneers were able to hold the Tars scoreless, taking the 1-0 victory. Barry pitcher Ramie Garcia allowed only two hits in seven innings to post her eighth win of the season while Rollins freshman pitcher Nicole Anderson gave up four hits and one run in seven innings of action. The Bucs opened the game with two hits in the top of the first, an infield single by Shyla Rider and a single to right field by Maile Keeney. Keeney's single sent Ashley Loose across home plate for the game's only run after Loose reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second. The one run would stand up the entire game as both teams struggled to hit the ball. Rollins recorded two hits on the night, both in the fifth inning, a single to left field by Devon Kontos and an infield single by Rachel Almengual.

Rollins came to play on Saturday as they once again used timely hitting and tough pitching for the doubleheader sweep, defeating #8 Barry University 3-1 in game one and a come from behind 2-1 victory in game two. Freshman pitcher Nicole Anderson got the win in both games, throwing 8.2 innings, allowing only four hits, one run and one walk while striking out five batters on the afternoon. The Tars got an early lead in game one, scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning against Bucs pitcher Ramie Garcia. Sophomore Jennifer Olsen opened the game with a single to left field and scored on junior Stacy Sanders' double to left field. Freshman Jamie Rausch was the next hitter and she notched her third homerun of the season, sending the ball over the center field fence.

Anderson held strong through the later innings, allowing only one hit after the fourth. Rausch led the Rollins bats, going 3-3 with two RBI and one run scored. For the Bucs, Maile Keeney went 2-3 at the plate. Rollins out hit the Bucs five to four in the game and both teams had one error.

In game two, the Bucs opened the scoring in the fourth inning, when Keeney got a hold of an Ingrid Schumacher pitch and sent the ball over the left field fence. That was all the scoring Barry could muster in the game, as Schumacher and Anderson combined to allow only six hits and one run, while walking only one batter and striking out three. The Tars rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits. Senior Kelly Cruz stepped to the plate with runners on first and third and two out and sent an Amber Jack pitch to the left field corner, scoring both runners. Anderson, who came on for Schumacher in the middle of the sixth inning, then promptly put out the next three Barry hitters in order, preserving the Tars 2-1 advantage. Recording hits for the Tars in game two were Rausch, Cruz, Sanders, and Kallie Jones with one hit apiece and Olsen with two.

On Sunday, the Tars headed to South Orlando and the Osceola Softball Complex for the final day of the Rebel games. The Tars split the two games, defeating Southern New Hampshire 13-2 and then falling 1-0 to Northwest Missouri State.

In game one, the Tars exploded for 12 hits and 13 runs on Southern New Hampshire, a team that was playing only the second game of their season. Sophomore Ingrid Schumacher led the Tars, going 3-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Senior Kelly Cruz and juniors Victoria Rudolph and Amanda DeFilippo all had two hits in the game, with Rudolph and DeFilippo picking up three RBI as well. Sophomore Rachel Almengual also had three RBI in the game, as she went 1-2 with two runs scored. Sophomore Jennifer Olsen walked four times and scored three of the Tars' runs. Freshman Rachel Brenneman was in the circle for the Tars where she allowed five hits and two runs while striking out 11 en route to her fourth win of the season. The second game of the day for the Tars was a different story, as Rollins and Northwest Missouri both went scoreless through six innings, and it took a mistake by the Tars for the Bearcats to grab the 1-0 victory.

Freshman Nicole Anderson had another fine evening in the circle, giving up only four hits and no walks while striking out five. On the mound for the Bearcats, Kelly Morris pitched all seven innings, surrendering five hits to the Tars. The two teams headed into the seventh inning scoreless and with two outs, Janelle Krohn knocked a double to right field. The next batter, Sarah Johnson sent a bouncer to the shortstop Cruz, who miss played the ball, allowing it to roll into center field. Krohn rounded the bases and scored the lone run of the game. The Tars came to bat in the bottom of the seventh with a chance to go ahead or tie, but Morris sat the Tar batters down in order.

Rollins will look to rebound from the loss as they host Southern Arkansas on Monday, March 20 at Lake Island Park. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

BASEBALL GETS INTO HEART OF SSC SCHEDULE; TAKES SERIES OVER ECKERD

Last week:

Rollins 4, Bentley 2
Rollins 8, Bentley 6
Rollins 11, Eckerd 7
Rollins 18, Eckerd 5
Eckerd 10, Rollins 6

Season record: 16-10

The Baseball team got themselves going in the right direction once again as they posted a 4-1 record last week against Bentley College and SSC rival, Eckerd College. The Tars started off the week on Monday with a win at home against Bentley, 4-2. They followed that up on Thursday with a come from behind victory over Bentley once again, 8-6. Then over the weekend, the Tars took the first two games against Eckerd College in St. Petersburg 11-7 and 18-5, then dropped the last game to the Tritons 10-6.

The Rollins offense consistently put up some big numbers last week. The Tars scored more than 10 runs twice last week including an 18 run effort against Eckerd in the first game of a double header.

The Tars got a monumental effort from their power hitting third baseman, Gene Howard. Howard doubled his RBI total last week as he now leads the team with 30 runs batted in on the year. On the week, Howard hit for a blistering .435 batting average with 10 hits in 23 at bats including two doubles, a triple, two home-runs, 15 RBI, seven runs scored, and a .870 slugging percentage. The Tars also got nice efforts from freshman Anthony Soto and sophomore Gary Martoccio. Soto hit for a .429 batting average with nine hits in 21 at bats including three doubles, a home-run, five RBI, with a .714 slugging percentage. Martoccio hit .375 with a homer, four RBI, eight walks and an outstanding on base percentage of .583. On the season Martoccio leads the team in on base percentage at .559 and has been incredible at second base defensively.

The senior ace of the staff, Eduardo Chile, got his second straight win on Saturday against Eckerd. Chile went eight innings giving up one run on seven hits, walking three and striking out seven. Chile had been a hard luck loser earlier this season, but the bats produced for him the last two games and he’s been elusive to hitters. Michael Eppich picked up his team leading fourth victory on the year with a relief victory in the Tars come from behind victory over Bentley on Thursday. Eppich worked 2.1 innings in relief of starter John Masklee giving up two hits and a walk but no runs while striking out one. Eppich also leads the team in appearances with 11. Junior Mario Lombardo pitched brilliantly against Bentley on Monday when he went eight innings striking out six while giving up two unearned runs on the way to his third victory on the season. And David Nathanson also picked up a victory for the Tars staff as well. Friday night, Nathanson allowed Eckerd only one base
runner for the first four innings. He ended up going 6.1 innings giving up five earned runs on eight hits while striking out three en route to his third victory of the season.

The Tars began the week with a win at home against the Bentley College Falcons, 4-2. Junior starting pitcher Mario Lombardo got his third win on the season for the Tars as he went eight strong innings giving up two unearned runs on four hits, walking two and striking out six. Sophomore third baseman Kevin Schnacke led the team offensively going 2-3 with a run scored and a walk.

The Tars completed the two game home sweep of Bentley on Thursday when they came back to defeat the Falcons 8-6. Freshman reliever Michael Eppich got the win in relief of starter John Masklee for his fourth victory. Eppich went 2.1 innings giving up just two hits and a walk striking out two. Junior pitcher Jon Wano got the save working two innings giving up just two hits for his third save on the year. The Tars were led by freshman designated hitter Anthony Soto, junior third baseman Gene Howard and freshman outfielder Tyler Hartman. Soto was 3-4 with four runs batted in, a run scored, and his second homer of the season. Howard was 2-4 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and a double. And Hartman was 2-4 with two runs scored and a double.

Friday the Tars began a three game set with the Eckerd College by beating the Tritons 11-7. Junior starting pitcher David Nathanson got his third win on the season as he went 6.1 innings giving up five runs on five hits while striking out three. The Tars were led offensively by third baseman Gene Howard who went 4-5 with five runs batted in, two runs scored, and his second homer of the year.

Saturday the Tars split a pair in a double-header against the Tritons taking the first game big, 18-5 and then dropping the second one 10-6. Senior starting pitcher Eduardo Chile got his third win on the season to draw even on the year. Chile went eight innings giving up one run on seven hits while striking out seven. The Tars were led by third baseman Gene Howard who went 3-6 with five runs batted in, a double and a triple. Senior outfielder Brent Magnuson also had a good day going 3-5 with two runs scored, four runs batted in, and his first homer of the season.

In the second game, junior Mario Lombardo took the loss getting through just 2.1 innings while giving up eight runs, six of which were earned, on seven hits. The Tars defense had all kinds of trouble as they accounted for six errors as a team. Gene Howard was once again the Tars leading hitter as he went 1-4 with a three run home-run. Anthony Soto also had a productive day. Soto went 3-4 with two runs scored, a double, and a stolen base.

This week, Rollins hosts the UMass-Amherst on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Miami for a Sunshine State Conference series with Barry this weekend.

MEN’S TENNIS SPLITS; FALLS JUST SHORT WITH #2 TEAM IN NATION

Last week:

Rollins 7, Florida Tech 2

Ouachita Baptist 5, Rollins 4

Coming off a successful spring break trip, the Rollins men’s tennis team was right back at it as they split a pair of matches last week, downing Florida Tech and falling to Ouachita Baptist.

Rollins dropped the top doubles match, but won the next two and cruised in singles play as the Tars defeated Florida Tech 7-2 in a Sunshine State Conference match on Saturday.

The nation's 17 th ranked doubles team of Keith Kessler and Cliff Giel downed Rollins' Carlos Custodio and Brian Compton 8-6 for a Florida Tech point in the No. 1 doubles match. Rollins won other two doubles positions with Adrian Tan and Michael Schwartz downing Diego Quiros and David Fowler 8-4 in the No. 2 position and Jonathan Gomez and David Tafur taking Christian Smith and Jeremy Casperson 8-2 in the No. 3 match. Giel, the 27 th ranked singles player in the nation, downed Gomez 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 match, but that would be all the Panthers would get as Rollins rolled to straight set wins in the six remaining matches. Nineteenth ranked Custodio took Kessler 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 slot with Tan winning this third straight match, 6-0, 6-1 over Nick Bonilla. Compton won the No. 4 match for Rollins over Quiros 6-4, 6-1 with 48 th ranked Tafur winning 6-1, 6-1 over Smith in the No. 5 position. Albin Hubscher improved to 7-2 on the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Fowler in the No. 6 singles match.

Playing their fifth match against a top 10 opponent this season, Rollins was once again close to tasting victory, but couldn't come up with the big point as the Tars fell to second ranked Ouachita Baptist 5-4 on Sunday. The loss evens the tenth ranked Tars record at 7-7 while the Tigers improve to 9-2.

Playing in just their third match together, Carlos Custodio and Brian Compton put the Tars on the board with a victory at No. 1 doubles, 9-7 over Emilien Rabin and Alejandro Chong. In the No. 3 doubles match, Jonathan Gomez and David Tafur had a match point, but were unable to convert and fell to Joan Costa and Vagen Akapian 9-8(8). Adrian Tan and Michael Schwartz fell in the No. 2 doubles match to Ondra Vana and Jakub Smid, 8-4.

Down 2-1, the Tars were ready to take control, but couldn't get things turned around and split with the Tigers in singles play. Tan upset 31 st ranked Akapian 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2 match while Albin Hubscher also came from behind to take a victory, beating Vasek Stverka 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 6 match. Gomez and Smid locked horns in the No. 3 position with Gomez coming out on top, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (0).

Vana downed nineteenth ranked Custodio 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 1 match, Compton had a service break in the third set in the No. 4 match, but ultimately fell to Pintaluba 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 and #48 Tafur was downed by Chong 6-1 (4), 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 5 slot.

The men’s basketball team finished out the month of February on a march into the NCAA Division II tournament. The Tars went 6-2 in the month and were able to close out the Sunshine State Conference’s regular season title. Codrey’s performance earned him a spot on the SSC All Tournament team as well.

The women’s basketball team’s dream season has finally come to a close. The Tars went 8-0 in the month of February, finishing off a perfect regular season.
