ROLLINS
COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
 Graham
McGrath and Mary Kate Donovan
Sailing
Graham
McGrath (Duxbury, Mass.) and Mary Kate Donovan (Nahant, Mass.)
highlighted the Tars effort last weekend at South Points #5
in Atlanta as the won seven of eight races in the B division
while also taking one second place finish. Battling horrific
conditions and freezing temperatures, they consistently won
each race by eight boat lengths over the likes of Florida, Georgia
Tech, South Florida and Florida Atlantic. Due in large part
to the talents of McGrath and Donovan, the Tars are in the midst
of one of their best seasons in recent years.
GLENN
WILKES NAMED NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR; GILES ALL-AMERICAN
Rollins
College women's basketball head coach Glenn Wilkes, Jr. has
been named the 2006 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA NCAA Division II Coach
of the Year and senior forward Joslyn Giles landed on the KODAK/WBCA
All-America Basketball Team.
It
is a great honor to be named the national coach of the year.
It hasn't quite hit me yet how special it is to receive this
award, said Wilkes. It really says a lot about the quality
of our team and season we had this year. A piece of this honor
also goes to my staff: Eddie Cole, Tami Stark and Kim Babers
have been instrumental to the team's successes. My dad (legendary
Stetson Head Coach Glenn Wilkes, Sr.) has given me so much guidance
over the years. I would have never been able to accomplish all
of this with out him.
Senior
forward Joslyn Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) was named Honorable
Mention All-America, capping off one of the best careers ever
by a Tars basketball player.
It
couldn't have happened to a better player, added Wilkes. Joslyn
is a class act on an off the court, she has been an absolute
pleasure to coach these past three years. Her talent,
leadership and dedication will be missed next year.
Glenn
Wilkes Jr. led this year's Tars team to an outstanding 28-2
finish in his 20 th year at the helm of the Tars program. The
2005-06 Tars became the first team in school and SSC history
to go undefeated in the regular season and was the first team
to go 16-0 in conference play. It was their ninth consecutive
20+ win season and 16 th under Wilkes, improving his career
record to 446-141, good enough for a .760 winning percentage.
His career victories and winning percentage place him in the
top 15 among all active Division II coaches. During his
20-year tenure with the Tars, Wilkes' teams have earned ten
regular season Sunshine State Conference (SSC) titles, six SSC
Tournament championships and he has been named SSC Coach of
the Year nine times. Wilkes has also earned South Regional Coach
of the Year five times and advanced to the NCAA Division II
National Tournament nine times.
Over
the last seven campaigns, Wilkes has taken the Tars to an even
higher level of conference and national success. Rollins is
regularly found on the WBCA Top 20 and atop the Sunshine State
Conference standings. The Tars have won five SSC titles, four
SSC Tournament Championships, and earned berths to six out of
the past seven NCAA Tournaments.
Senior
forward Joslyn Giles was a huge reason for the successes of
this year's Tars team. Giles became the third player
in Rollins history to be named the Sunshine State Player of
the Year. She led the Tars with an average of 14.7 points
and 7.3 rebounds per game and finished third overall in the
conference in points per game. In addition to her Kodak
All-America team honorable mention nod, Giles was also named
first team All-Conference, first team All-South Region, and
she was named to the SSC All-Tournament team.
On
February 15, Giles became the 17 th player in Rollins women's
basketball history to reach the coveted 1,000 point plateau.
In her three seasons as a Tar, Giles accumulated 1,084
points. Including her 332 points she scored as a freshman
at Stetson, Giles has a career total of 1,416 points.
On December 4, she was named the Conference women's basketball
Player of the Week after leading the Tars to two victories and
averaging 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.0 steals
per game. Giles finishes her career at Rollins at the
top of many of the all-time career lists including 15 th in
total point (1,084), ninth in total rebounds (607), fifth in
blocked shots (106), and sixth in made free throws (343).

The
Rollins College softball team spent the week in Winter Park,
hosting Southern Arkansas for a double header on Monday and
conference opponent Saint Leo for a weekend series. The
Tars and Lady Muleriders split their double header with Rollins
winning game one 4-3 and Southern Arkansas winning game two
2-1. Against Saint Leo, the Tars ran into a tough pitcher
in Katie Heintz and dropped the series opener 1-0 on Friday
evening and game one on Saturday 2-1 before rallying to win
game two on Saturday 1-0 in eight innings.
The
Tars now stand at 30-8 on the season and 8-4 in the Sunshine
State Conference. Senior Kelly Cruz (Winter Springs,
Fla.) notched six hits during the week, going 6-15 at the plate
(.400) with one double and three RBI to lead the Tars.
Cruz now has 192 hits in her four year career at Rollins, two
shy of the Rollins All-Time record held by Jody Horton with
194 hits. Sophomore Ingrid Schumacher (Naples, Fla.) and freshman
Nicole Anderson (Brandon, Fla.) split the pitching duties during
the week, with Schumacher finishing 1-1 with an ERA of 0.84.
In 16.2 innings of work she allowed only 14 hits and
two runs while walking three and striking out 15. Anderson
went 1-2 for the week with an ERA of 2.17. In her 19.1
innings she struck out 19 while surrendering 18 hits, six runs
and four walks.
In
the first game of the Monday evening double header against Southern
Arkansas, Rollins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Cruz
doubled home two runs in the bottom of the first. Southern
Arkansas then scored the next three runs, one in the fourth
courtesy of an Erin Litvik homerun and two in the fifth.
The Tars tied the score in the bottom of the sixth when junior
Victoria Rudolph (Titusville, Fla.) hit her first homerun of
the season over the center field fence. Lady Mulerider
pitcher Macie Astolfo then retired the next three batters, keeping
the game notched at three. Rollins pitcher Anderson put
Southern Arkansas down in order in the seventh, giving the Tars
a chance to win in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Ashley
East (Pace, Fla.) opened the inning by earning a walk and then
advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Stacy Sanders
(Orlando, Fla.). Freshman Jamie Rausch (Ocoee, Fla.)
stepped to the plate and earned the second walk of the inning
and then Cruz sent a foul ball to the third base side for the
second out of the inning. Schumacher stepped to the plate
with two out and two on when relief pitcher Kayla King's pitch
got by the catcher advancing the runners to second and third.
The catcher then attempted to throw out East as she was
advancing to third and the ball went into left field, allowing
East to score the winning run.
In
the nightcap, both teams scored a run in the first and the Lady
Muleriders got the go ahead run in the fourth to win the game
2-1. Schumacher suffered her first loss of the season,
allowing six hits and two runs in six innings of work.
Kayla King took the win for Southern Arkansas. Five separate
Tars, East, Rausch, Cruz, Rudolph and junior Devon Kontos (Orlando,
Fla.), tallied one hit in the game, as the Tars were out-hit
6-5 and left five base runners stranded.
The
Tars then turned their attention to Saint Leo and unfortunately
ran into a hot pitcher on Friday evening and dropped the series
opener 1-0. Lions' pitcher Katie Heintz allowed only
three hits and struck out 14 batters to lead Saint Leo over
the Tars. Anderson recorded the loss for the Tars, throwing
seven innings and allowing only six hits and one run while striking
out five. Inning after inning the two pitchers held their opponents
scoreless and combined to allow only nine hits in the game,
seven singles, one double and one home run. Junior outfielder
Hayley Mallory got a hold of an Anderson pitch and sent to ball
sailing over the left field fence for the game's lone score
in the fifth inning. Cruz recorded two hits in the game, going
2-3, while Kontos notched the other hit for the Tars, a single
to left field in the sixth inning.
In
a Saturday afternoon double header Rollins took one of two from
Saint Leo, losing the first game 2-1 and grabbing the second
1-0 in eight innings. The pitchers for both teams ruled
the day, as neither team was able to put together a rally to
grab an out-right lead. In game one, Rollins took an
early 1-0 lead as Cruz singled to center field scoring Sanders
from second base. Cruz led the Tars in game one, going
2-3 with one RBI. Sophomore Jennifer Olsen (Winter Haven,
Fla.) notched the other hit in the game for Rollins in the fifth,
but was left stranded on second base. The Lions scored
their first run of the game in the second, as Rollins pitcher
Anderson hit Stasi Sattler with the bases loaded, scoring Ally
Maddox from third base. The Lions scored again in the
fifth as they opened the inning with a single and two doubles.
Game
two was a battle of the pitchers, as Heintz and Schumacher kept
their opponents in check. In the bottom of the eighth,
the Tars put together a run and scored the only run of the game,
taking the 1-0 victory. After senior Kallie Jones (Chandler,
Okla.) opened the eighth inning with a groundout to the shortstop,
Schumacher walked. Junior Lauren Winney (Jacksonville,
Fla.) pinch ran for Schumacher, advanced to second on a wild
pitch and to third on a bunt by Kontos. Olsen then stepped
to the plate and sent a single to center field, scoring Winney
and ending the game. Schumacher went all eight innings for the
Tars, allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out
seven for her tenth win of the season. Heintz also went
the distance giving up three hits and three walks while striking
out 14.
Rollins
will return to the field on Friday, March 31 when they travel
to Melbourne, Fla. to take on Florida Tech for a weekend series.
The two teams will play game one on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
and return on Saturday, April 1 for a double header, scheduled
to begin at 1:00 p.m.

Season
Record: 18-13, 3-6 SSC
The
Rollins baseball team had a tough time last week, finishing
just under .500 with a 2-3 record against Division I foe, Massachusetts
and SSC rival, Barry. The Tars split a two game set at
home with the Minutemen and then traveled down to Miami Shores
where they lost two out of three to the Buccaneers. Junior
third baseman Gene Howard led the Tars at the plate, posting
a .500 batting average for the week. Junior starting
pitcher David Nathanson pitched brilliantly against Barry on
Friday night despite being tagged with the loss. Junior starting
pitcher Mario Lombardo pitched his second complete game of the
year in the Tars' victory over Barry on Sunday.
The
week began with a tough defeat at the hands of the University
of Massachusetts on Tuesday. Junior Jonathan Wano got
the start for the Tars and found himself in a 4-0 hole early
due to three unearned runs. The Tars offense couldn't
recover from the damage done on the defensive end and Rollins
dropped the game 7-2. Freshman outfielder Anthony Soto
was the only Tar with multiple hits as he went 2-5 on the night
with a run scored.
The
Tars returned Wednesday night and exacted some revenge on the
Minutemen with a 13-5 win. Freshman reliever John Masklee
came in to pitch in the fourth inning, working five solid innings
for his first collegiate victory. The Tars took advantage
of six UMass errors and slugged out 11 hits on the day.
Junior shortstop Ryan McKenzie led the Rollins offense going
2-3 with two runs scored, two doubles, and three runs batted
in.
Friday,
the Tars headed down to Miami Shores, only to get shut-out by
the Buccaneers' Jayson Brown. Brown went the distance
for a complete game shutout, surrendering only five hits while
striking out eleven. Junior David Nathanson pitched very
well for the Tars, going eight innings for the complete game
and giving up two runs on seven hits while matching a season
high with ten strike-outs. Gene Howard was the only Tar
to get multiple hits as he went 3-4 with a double.
Saturday
Barry took the first game of a double header 7-5, but the Tars
were able to avoid the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the second
game. In the opener the Tars led the Bucs 5-2 going into the
bottom of the eighth inning only to see their lead evaporate
into a 7-5 Buccaneer victory. Eduardo Chile pitched well
but faltered in the end giving up six earned runs on six hits.
Ryan McKenzie led the Tars in hitting once again going
2-4 with a run score and a RBI. Mario Lombardo took care
of the Bucs in the second game going the full seven innings
for the complete game while giving up just one run on five hits.
Senior Brent Magnuson was the Tars leading hitter going
2-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
The
Tars are now 18-13 overall and sit at 3-6 in SSC play.
The Tars have the SSC's best rated pitching staff, leading the
league in ERA at 3.14. Rollins will continue SSC play
this week as they host Saint Leo on Tuesday March 28 at 7 pm,
and then welcome Florida Tech for a three game set on Friday
and Saturday March 31 and April 1.

SAILORS
POST SECOND PLACE FINISH IN ATLANTA
Last
week: second place at South Points #5
The
Rollins varsity sailing team concluded the regular season with
a very successful trip to Atlanta for South Points #5. The sailors
had to brave strong winds and temperatures hovering in the low
40s. Graham McGrath and Mary Kate Donovan highlighted the Tars
effort as they won seven of eight races in the B division while
also taking one second place finish. They were consistently
winning each race by eight boat lengths over the likes of Florida,
Georgia Tech, South Florida and Florida Atlantic.
Sailing
in the A division for the Tars was skipper Alvaro Sanchez and
crew Ryan Kearney for the first six races with Natalie Powers
replacing Kearney for the final two trips down the course.
Rollins
will look to continue their stellar season on April 8-9 at the
SAISA Championships in Charleston, South Carolina.
CREW
ROWS LAST EVENT OF SEASON ON LAKE MAITLAND
Last
week: hosted Spring Break Race on Lake Maitland
The
Rollins men's and women's rowing teams hosted the Spring Break
Race on a very windy and chilly Saturday morning at Lake Maitland.
The Tars weren't victorious in any of the fours or eights, but
still posted some good times in the tough conditions.
The
team men's varsity eight of Colleen Reagan, Drew Brodnax, Shawn
Tavares, Skyler Wilson, Eric Fraser, Trevor Luna, David Bagby,
Brandon Koch and Collin Campbell scored a second place finish,
covering the distance in 5:52.7. The Tars took second and fourth
in the varsity four race with the A boat of Reagan, Brodnax,
Tavares, Koch and Campbell posting a time of 6:20.4 and the
B team of Lisa Knapp, Fraser, Wilson, Bagby and Luna going 6:35.5.
Brodnax and Bagby teamed to take first in the pairs event with
a time of 7:11.4 while Campbell and Koch took second in 7:18.2.
Nova
Southeastern swept the women's competition, winning each of
the five races. The Tars novice eight of Knapp, Katie Broome,
Cheli Wilkerson, Liza Hussey, Sarah Pantages, Kelly McNoldy,
Rachel Todd, Shannon Van Dyke and Laura Edwards finished second
with a time of 7:10.0, just five seconds behind Nova SE, but
five seconds ahead of UCF. The varsity eight boat of Knapp,
Kim Lucy, Broome, Wilkerson, Hussey, Pantages, Edwards, VanDyke
and Megan Wise finished in third place with a time of 7:10.8.
The
event concludes the Tars home slate, but they will get right
back into it with a trip West for the San Diego Crew Classic
on Saturday, April 1.
