His score led eighth ranked Rollins to a third place finish in a field consisting of the South's 19 best teams.

MEN'S GOLF THIRD AT SOUTHEASTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE

Last week: 3 rd of 19 teams

The Rollins men's golf team finished the long and grueling Southeastern Intercollegiate strong, firing 301 on day three to take third place in a field comprised of the region's 19 best schools. The event was hosted by Valdosta State University at Kinderlou Forest in Valdosta, Georgia.

Dan Walters, last year's champion of the Southeastern, shot just one round over par the entire tournament and tied with two others for second place with 216 strokes. The senior opened with even par 72 on Sunday before coming back with a one under 71 on day two. He then finished the event with a 73 and tied with Fredrick Lundberg and Federico Damus of West Florida.

UWF's Chris Myers led from start to finish, shooting a pair of 70's in the first two days and finishing up with a 75 to win by one stroke over Walters.

Fellow senior Tim Acquaviva and junior Jeff Golden both had solid tournaments, tying for 18 th place. Acquaviva shot 75 in round one, fired even par in round two and finished with a 78 on Tuesday for 225 total shots. Winter Park product Golden kicked off the tournament with a 73 before carding 77 and 75 on the final two days.

Andrew Pranger tied for 46 th place, opening with a 78 and ending with a pair of 76's for 230 shots while Darren Lundgren tied for 56 th (76-79-77) at 232 shots.

Last week:

Florida Southern 1, Rollins 0

Florida Southern 4, Rollins 0

Florida Southern 2, Rollins 1 (10 inn.)

Rollins 9, Fort Valley State 1 (5 inn.)

Rollins 18, Paine 0 (5 inn.)

Rollins 8, Albany State 0 (6 inn.)

Rollins 7, Albany State 0

Season Record: 36-13, 9-9 SSC

The Rollins softball team dropped three close games to Florida Southern, the nation's #2 ranked team, but got back to form over the weekend, pounding teams at the Fort Valley State Tournament. The week moves the Tars record to 36-13 on the season and an even 9-9 in Sunshine State Conference play.

Senior Kelly Cruz had the big bat for the Tars on the week, going a combined 14-26 (.538 BA) with 10 runs scored and seven RBI. Freshman hurler Nicole Anderson was solid in the circle, posting a 3-1 record and allowing just two earned runs in 24.2 innings while racking up 38 strikeouts. Her lone loss came in a 10 inning affair with Florida Southern in which she threw the entire game.

The Tars were swept in an SSC series for the first time this season, dropping three straight to Florida Southern. In the opener, Rollins showed their toughness by allowing only three hits, but fell short, losing 1-0 to the Moccasins on Tuesday evening.   Sophomore Ingrid Schumacher went the distance for the Tars and went pitch for pitch with Mocs starter Megan Brown.   The two pitchers combined to allow only five hits, one run, no walks and eight strike outs.

On Tuesday's doubleheader, the Moccasins pulled out two victories over the Tars, winning 4-0 in game one and 2-1 in the ten inning game two. Game one saw the Mocs only out-hit the Tars by one, 4-3, but Rollins had five costly errors, which was the difference in the 4-0 loss.   Florida Southern grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first and then was held in check by the Tars for the next three innings.   A two-run fifth inning and a one run sixth gave the Moccasins the 4-0 advantage.   Sophomore Ingrid Schumacher was in the circle for the Tars, where she surrendered four hits and four runs while walking only two and striking out five. Sophomores Jen Olsen and Rachel Almengual and senior Kelly Cruz   had the hits in the game for the Tars.

The nightcap was a close game, as both teams scored an early run to tie the game at one, which lasted until Florida Southern scored the winning run in the bottom of the tenth.   The Tars out-hit the Mocs 7-5 in the game, but were unable to capitalize on their base runners. Almengual led the Tars in the game, going 2-5 from the plate and scoring one run.   Cruz, Rausch, Schumacher, junior Amanda DeFilippo and freshman Ashley East had the other hits in the game for Rollins.   Freshman Nicole Anderson went the distance for the Tars, throwing all 9.2 innings.   She allowed only five hits and one earned run and walked two while striking out 14.

Rollins ended their five game skid in a big way, rolling up three wins at the Fort Valley State Tournament and sweeping Albany State in a doubleheader. The Tars opened the tournament with a 9-1 win over host Fort Valley, spent the afternoon beating Paine 18-0 and finished up with a 10-5 win over Claflin.

Nicole Anderson scored two wins in the circle for the Tars, going the distance against Fort Valley and coming in out of the bullpen versus Claflin. Ingrid Schumacher scored the victory over Paine, throwing a complete game shutout.

In the opener against host Fort Valley State, Rollins knocked out 11 hits while the defense held the Wildcats to just three hits in the Tars 9-1, five inning victory. Junior Devon Kontos rocked her first career homerun, going 1-2 with a run scored and two RBI. The Tars power hitters shined in the game as Kelly Cruz, Jamie Rausch and Stacy Sanders each tallied two hits and batted in two runs. Freshman Nicole Anderson had a solid outing, surrendering just one run on three hits while striking out nine.

The bats were hotter in Friday's middle game as Rollins made quick work of Paine College, winning by a lopsided score of 18-0 in five innings. Ashley East had a big day at the plate, going 3-4 with four RBI and four runs scored. Kallie Jo Jones hit 2-2 with three RBI and two runs scored, highlighted by a third inning homer. Jen Olsen, Kelly Cruz, Jamie Rausch and Ingrid Schumacher also each knocked out two hits in the contest. Schumacher picked up the shutout, her fourth of the year, scattering just two hits and striking out six to improve her record to 12-4.

Rollins stumbled coming out of the gate in the night cap with Claflin, going down 5-4 after four innings. The Tars then got rolling in the final two frames, scoring two in the fifth and five in the sixth while keeping Claflin off of the board for the 10-5 win. Rachel Almengaul and Kelly Cruz each went 3-3 to lead the Rollins offense. Almengaul also tallied two RBI and three runs while Cruz batted in three and crossed the plate twice. Freshman Rachel Brenneman started the game, allowing five runs, three earned, with three strikeouts in three innings of work. Anderson threw the final three innings, surrendering just one hit and fanning six.

The week ended with a decisive doubleheader, shutout sweep at Albany State. Rollins was an 8-0 (six innings) winner in the opener and 7-0 victor in the nightcap. The Tars pounded out 15 hits in game one and eight in game two while getting two solid performances from pitchers Nicole Anderson and Ingrid Schumacher.

Rollins was very balanced on offense as three players notched four hits on the day. Amanda DeFilippo hit 4-6 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Kelly Cruz and Schumacher each went 4-7 with Cruz crossing the plate four times.

Anderson picked up the game one victory, surrendering just three hits while striking out nine. Schumacher was the game two winner, scattering five hits and walking one with eight strikeouts. The Tars defense was also up to the task as they played error free softball in both games. The Tars pounded the ball in game one, rolling up 15 hits in the 8-0 victory. Senior Kelly Cruz and freshman Ashley East each hit 3-3 in the game with Kallie Jones, Stacy Sanders and Amanda DeFilippo each batting in a pair.

Schumacher and DeFilippo had the big bats in game two, each hitting 2-3 with an RBI and run scored. Rollins exploded for five runs in the top half of the first, racking up four hits and taking advantage of two Rams miscues. Olsen drew a leadoff walk and scored after a Cruz single to left later in the inning. Jamie Rausch then connected for a single, but the ball squirted past the leftfielder and allowed Cruz and Rachel Almengaul to score. Schumacher and DeFilippo each hit RBI singles later in the inning for a big 5-0 Rollins lead.

Two more runs came in the fourth as DeFilippo doubled, then scored off an Olsen single. Almengaul then blasted a double to left that plated Olsen and made the count 7-0 in favor of the visitors. Albany threatened in the sixth, putting two on with one out, but the Tars stayed strong and held on for the shutout sweep.

After the tough schedule last week, the Tars will take it easy with just one doubleheader over the next seven days. They will host Florida Gulf Coast in a big regional match-up at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 at Lake Island Park.

BASEBALL SWEPT BY SAINT LEO IN CONFERENCE SERIES

Last week:

Saint Leo 6, Rollins 4

Saint Leo 7, Rollins 3

Saint Leo 6, Rollins 1

Season record: 21-17; 5-10 SSC

The Rollins baseball team (21-17, 5-10) was swept in a conference series for the second time this season over the weekend, losing a pair to Saint Leo on Saturday, 7-3 and 6-1, after falling Friday night, 6-4.   In the three game series, the Lions pitching staff held the Tars to eight runs on 16 hits. The Tars' pitching staff had problems with the Lions' line-up as well.   On the weekend, the Tars starting pitching went 17 innings, giving up 14 earned runs on 24 hits.

Friday night, Rollins couldn't overcome a good pitching performance from Saint Leo as they fell on the road to the Lions, 6-4.   The Tars were down three runs at 5-2 going into the eighth.   Rollins was able to get to within a run at 5-4.   However, the Lions responded with another run in the bottom half of the eighth, and the Tars fell 6-4.   Junior David Nathanson battled on the mound for seven innings giving up just three earned runs on seven hits, but was tagged with his fourth loss on the season.

Rollins was led offensively by sophomore second baseman Gary Martoccio.   Martoccio reached base three times, going 2-4 with two singles, a hit by pitch, and two runs scored.   He was the only Tar with multiple hits.   The Tars as a team posted just five hits.   Freshman Anthony Soto had a good night driving runners in.   Soto was 1-3 on the night, with a single and two runner batted in. Sophomore designated hitter Steven Mannenbach matched Soto's RBI output with two runs batted in of his own.   Mannenbach went 1-3 with a single and two RBI. David Nathanson worked seven strong innings giving up five runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits while striking out four.

The Tars then dropped a pair in the double-header finale of the series on Saturday, 7-3 and 6-1.   The Tars starting pitchers gave up 11 earned runs while logging just ten combined innings.   The Rollins line-up had difficulties against the Lions pitching staff.   The Rollins bats accumulated 11 hits and four runs on the day.

The Tars were led offensively in the first game by senior outfielder Brent Magnuson.   Magnuson went 2-4 with two RBI and a double.   Junior third baseman Gene Howard went 2-5 with two runs scored and a double and sophomore designated hitter Kevin Schnacke went 1-3 with a walk and a RBI single.

Senior starter Eduardo Chile had a rough outing giving up six earned runs over 4.2 innings.   He is now 4-5 on the season.   Freshman Michael Eppich did a nice job in relief for the Tars going 3.1 innings giving up one unearned run on one hit while striking out one.

The Tars were led offensively in the second game by sophomore first baseman Stefano Foggi who went 2-3 with a RBI single.   He was the only Tar with multiple hits.   Gary Martoccio went 1-2 with a sac bunt.   Gene Howard and Jesse More were the only other Tars to log hits.

Junior starting pitcher Mario Lombardo didn't have his best stuff on Saturday.   Lombardo went 5.1 innings giving up five earned runs on seven hits, striking out three walking one and hitting two batters.   Lombardo is now 4-4, and narrowly missed his third complete game of the season.

The Tars will return home to Alfond Stadium for four games this week.   Rollins will begin the week on Tuesday when they will welcome Embry-Riddle University into Winter Park.   First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.   Then on Thursday, April 13 the Tars will welcome the defending National Champions, Florida Southern College for a three game set.   First pitch on Thursday is set for 7:00 pm.   Then on Friday, the Tars and Mocs will meet up for a double-header beginning at 1:00 pm.

WOMEN'S TENNIS SUFFERS THREE STRAIGHT 5-4 LOSSES

Last week:

North Florida 5, Rollins 4

Florida Gulf Coast 5, Rollins 4

Eckerd 5, Rollins 4

Season record: 10-10 (ranked #12 in nation)

The Rollins women's tennis team was turned back in three matches last week, each by scores of 5-4. In all three contests, Rollins had multiple chances of grabbing victory, but were unable to close it out.

Rollins hosted Division I foe North Florida on Tuesday, the Tars had a great start, but weren't able to hang on for the victory, falling 5-4 to the Ospreys.   The Tars swept the doubles' competition 3-0, but went just 1-5 in their singles matches.

The Tars' number one doubles pair, No. 7 senior Tasi Purcell and sophomore Marnie Mahler defeated Catalina Castillo and Florencia Torres 8-3.   Mahler and Purcell move to 11-5 as a doubles pair, and have strung together three straight victories.   The Tars' number two pair, sophomores Soni Bernal and Cassie Webster defeated Laura Cockbill and Katja Brandt, 8-4.   And the combination of freshman Anastasiya Shevchenko and sophomore Silvia Frandji defeated Vanessa Sanchez and Robin Rogers, 8-6.

Unfortunately, the Tars were not able to keep the momentum going from the doubles victories in to singles competition.   No. 24 Tasi Purcell was the only Tar to win her singles match.   Purcell defeated Vanessa Sanchez 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.   Purcell improved to 13-5 on the season and 11-5 as the team's No. 1. Castillo downed Mahler 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 position.   Torres defeated Bernal 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 match.   Brandt edged Shevchenko 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 4 match.   Cockbill got past Frandji 6-1, 6-1 in the number five match-up.   And Rogers defeated Webster 6-1, 6-2.

The Tars then headed to Ft. Myers for a match-up with No. 21 Florida Gulf Coast. It was more of the same as Rollins went down 2-1 in doubles and took three of the top four singles matches, but were unable to find the deciding victory. Rollins falls to 10-9 on the year while FGCU improves to 12-4.

In doubles, the Tars picked up a victory in the No. 3 match with Silvia Frandji and Anastasiya Shevchenko downing Brett Kinley and Lydia Diaz-Galindo 8-6. Cassie Webster and Sonia Bernal lost to Krista Polulak and Maria Maggiornini 8-3 in the No. 2 match and the seventh ranked team of Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler lost for just the third time in their last 10 matches as they fell 8-1 to Jonalea Hileman and Maria Braniecka in the No. 1 slot.

No. 24 Purcell held rank over No. 49 Braniecka in the No. 1 singles match, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. No. 35 Marnie Mahler was also a straight set winner, taking Maggiornini 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 position. Shevchenko improved to 9-8 on the year as she defeated Diaz-Galindo 6-3, 6-1.

On Saturday, the Rollins College women's tennis team lost another heart-breaker, falling to Eckerd College at home 5-4.   The Tars are now 10-10 on the season, but still carry a #12 ranking in the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis rankings.   Eckerd came in with a #8 national ranking, and now improves to 17-3 with the win.   In a near mirror image to the loss earlier this week to Florida Gulf Coast, The Tars went down 2-1 in doubles and took three of the top four singles matches, but were unable to find the deciding victory.

In doubles, the Tritons top pair, #15 Madora Mak and Julia Lima defeated the Tars number one pair, #7 Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler, 8-2.   The Tritons also took the number two match, with Amanda McClure and Rachel Finch defeating Soni Bernal and Cassie Webster in a very close match, 9-8 (5).   The Tars got a victory in the number three match as Anastasiya Shevchenko and Silvia Frandji defeated Giana Oliveira and Carolyn Niedermayer 9-8(5) as well.

In singles, #24 Tasi Purcell defeated #15 Madora Mak 6-2, 6-0.   Purcell is now 14-5.   #35 Marnie Mahler got a victory for the Tars against Giana Oliviera, 6-3, 6-3.   And Anastasiya Shevchenko got the other singles victory for the Tars in the number four match.   Shevchenko defeated Rachel Finch, in a tie break 7-6 (1) and 6-1.   Eckerd took the remaining three matches.   Julia Lima defeated Soni Bernal in the number three match, 6-4, 7-6 (5).    Amanda McClure defeated Silvia Frandji in the number five match, 6-3, 6-3.   And Carolyn Niedermayer defeated Cassie Webster in the number six match, 7-6, 6-3.

The Tars will hit the courts again on Tuesday April 11 when they will play host to conference rival, Florida Southern.   The match is set to begin at 3:30

MEN'S TENNIS DOWNS SAINT LEO; FALLS TO #1 VALDOSTA STATE

Last week:

Rollins 9, Saint Leo 0

Valdosta State 6, Rollins 3

Season record: 9-10 (ranked #12 in nation)

The hard luck season continued for the Rollins men's tennis team as they got back to their winning ways with a 9-0 drubbing of Saint Leo, but dropped a heartbreaker to top ranked Valdosta State, 6-3. On the season, Rollins has lost heartbreakers to seven of Division II's top 10 teams, including falling to West Florida when they were ranked No. 1 and Ouachita Baptist and Armstrong Atlantic when they were ranked No. 2.

Against the Lions of Saint Leo, Tars put up their fifth shutout of the season and second over Saint Leo, downing the Lions 9-0 in a Sunshine State Conference match-up.

Rollins made quick work of the contest with just one match going to a third-set, super tiebreaker.   In No. 1 singles, Jonathan Gomez and David Tafur improved to 4-1 as a duo, downing Mike DiGiacomo and Neil Watson 8-3. Adrian Tan and Brian Irvin took the No. 2 match over Saif Noorsumar and Greg Strange 8-1 while Brian Compton and Michael Schwartz defeated David Farinez and Mike Del Priore 8-3 in the No. 3 position.

The Tars rolled in singles play, taking five matches in straight sets. Tan improved to a team best 11-6 on the year and 4-1 in the No. 1 position, downing DiGiacomo 6-3, 3-1 (ret.). Gomez also tallied his 11 th victory of the season, taking Watson 3-6, 6-2, 10-1 in the No. 2 singles slot. Tafur was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Farinez in the No. 3 match while Compton won 6-1, 6-0 over Strange at No. 4. Albin Hubscher defeated Noorsumar 6-4, 6-1 in No. 5 singles and Irvin stayed perfect on the year, improving to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over De Priore.

On Sunday, Rollins traveled just across the state line for a match-up with top ranked and undefeated Valdosta State. The No. 12 Rollins men's tennis team held a 2-1 lead after doubles, but couldn't come up with the needed wins in single play as they fell to No. 1 Valdosta State 6-3.

Rollins took the top two doubles matches, including a big upset in the No. 1 match. Carlos Custodio and Brian Compton, the nation's 20 th ranked team, rolled on No. 7 Christoph Schneider and Dominik Hansen 8-1. David Tafur and Jonathan Gomez won their third straight match together, taking Leos Jelinek and Niko Overkemping 8-5 in the No. 2 position. The Blazers (18-0) got on the board in the No. 3 match as Mickael Andreo and Thomas Provost downed Brian Irvin and Adrian Tan 8-4.

SHARE THE VISION WITH ROLLINS WOMEN'S GOLF LEGENDS AT REUNION

Dear Friends of Rollins Athletics,

I am so excited to extend to you a wonderful opportunity to “Share the Vision” of Rollins Women's Golf.   David Lord, Rollins class of 1969 and a member of the board of Trustees, has graciously donated his home at Reunion, Florida, site of the LPGA Ginn Open for use by the women's golf team during the entire LPGA event, from April 27-30.   David's house is located just off the number one green of the Palmer course with a spectacular view.   His home is a perfect venue to celebrate the return of the LPGA to Orlando, as well as to share the history and tradition of excellence that Rollins women's golf has enjoyed since the beginning.

Attached is your personal invitation to the brunch and hospitality house.   The brunch on Saturday will celebrate all of the legendary women who have helped establish the Rollins women's golf program as one of the premier teams in the country.   We are honored to have Carolyn Bivens, the Commissioner of the LPGA, as one of our honored guests.   We will gather to venerate our successes, including Marlene Streit's induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame, as well as the 14 USGA Championships won by Rollins golfers.   And, the house will be open all four days of the tournament for Rollins friends and family to enjoy some refreshments as they soak in the LPGA atmosphere.   Please check our website after April 1 for updates on events.   Please RSVP to me via email at jgarner@rollins.edu , or call (407) 646-2601.

I hope you caught some of the season's coverage on the Golf Channel on “College Central.”    We have received wonderful press with a very nice quote about Rollins Women's Golf and a “College Dynasty.”   I am so proud of our team, their performance on the golf course and their ability to excel in the classroom.   Our team GPA was 3.52 for the fall semester, which was the highest of any team at Rollins.   Immediately following the brunch on Saturday, we will take the first step in NCAA regional tournament play to capture our fourth consecutive NCAA National Championship!

On behalf of the 2005-06 women's golf team, we look forward to seeing you at Reunion as we host this exciting and fun event, share our vision for growing the golf program, unveil our plans for a new on-campus short-game facility and honor the Legends of Rollins Women's Golf.   If you have any questions, or need any further information, please don't hesitate to contact me.   GO TARS!!

Sincerely,

Julie Garner

Head Women's Golf Coach
