ROLLINS COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Sophomore middle blocker Lorena Orlandini fired a barrage of ground shaking spikes at opponents all weekend to lead the Rollins volleyball team in a four game sweep at the Rollins College/Champions Sports Invitational. The six footer racked up a team best 49 kills in the tourney, including 16 in the Tars five game, final match battle against Edinboro .

 

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS ALL FOUR GAMES AT ROLLINS INVITE

Rollins played host to four other schools last weekend in the Rollins College/Champions Sports Invitational and sent everyone home with a loss as the Tars swept through to begin the season 4-0.   Sindee Snow's squad tangled with Valdosta State in their opener, winning 30-15, 24-30, 30-23, 30 -28. Sophomore Christina Reinders ( Orlando , Fla . / Winter Park ) had a break-out Malarky (3) sets up Orlandini (2) and Reinders (9)game, blasting a career best 21 kills and posting a .500 attack percentage. Newcomer Lacey Malarky ( Lawrence , Kan . / Free State ) rolled up 54 assists for the Tars. In the day one night cap against Wisconsin- Parkside , Rollins cruised to a 30-23, 30-27, 30-32, 30-21 victory. Allison North ( Mobile , Ala . / McGill Toolen Catholic) led the Tars with 17 kills while Malarky notched 51 assists.

In day two, Rollins dropped the first game to West Alabama 31-29, but rebounded to take the next three 30-15, 30-11, 30-26 and downed the Tigers. Lorena Orlandini ( Miaraflores , Lima Peru/ Nuestra Denora Del Carmen) led the way with 15 kills while also getting four assists. Malarky continued her string of stellar performances at setter, racking up a season best 56 assists. The Tars final clash with Edinboro was the match of the weekend as Rollins battled to a five game (28-30, 30-26, 30-26, 30 -28, 15-20) win over the visitors from Pennsylvania . Amy Barlow ( Phoenix , Ariz . / Seton Catholic) rocked 20 kills for the Tars while Orlandini added 16 and a .441 attack percentage. Malarky again made it easy for the hitters, posting 50 assists.

The Tars will take their 4-0 record into the Florida Southern Classic this weekend. Rollins hosts Dowling at 4 p.m. and Mt. Olive College at 7 p.m. in Winter Park on Friday, September 2 before traveling to Lakeland to take on Franklin Pierce at noon and Bryant at 4 p.m.

 

MEN'S SOCCER ROUTS FLA. TECH IN HOME OPENER Christopher Chafin

The men's soccer team packed Barker Family Stadium on Friday and sent the Tar fans home happy after posting a decisive 5-1 victory over Florida Tech. Senior Matthew Gowan (Palm City, Fla ./ Martin County High) scored the Tars first goal of the season, knocking a Jon Gruenewald (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) cross into the back of the net in the 11 th minute. Christopher Chafin ( Lake Worth , Fla. /The King's Academy) put Rollins up 2-0 in the 22 nd minute after a Juan Kusnir ( Maitland , Fla. /Trinity Prep) corner kick deflected off a defender and right to Chafin's foot. Just over a minute later, senior Ryan Dodds ( Windermere , Fla. /Edgewater) broke away down the left side of the field and beat the Panthers keeper to give Rollins a 3-0 cushion.

 

The Tars got a free kick in the 36 th minute which bounced around in front of the goal and ended up in front of Leslie Osei ( Evanston , Ill . / Evanston Township). The sophomore, who had entered the game just a minute prior, blasted a strike to the back of the net for his first career goal.   The Tars were whistled for a foul in the 38 th minute to set up a Geraldro Valerio penalty kick goal and got Tech on the board, 4-1.   The game's final score came in the 42 nd minute with Kusnir firing a shot from the top of the box after a Gowan pass.

 

Due to the impending hurricane, the Tars match against Thomas University scheduled for Saturday, August 27 was cancelled and will not be made up.

 

The Tars will trek to Alabama this weekend as they will take on Alabama-Huntsville Friday, September 2 at 7 p.m. (CST) and Montevallo Sunday, September 4 at 2:30 p.m. (CST).

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER GETS BY FLAGLER WITH STINGY DEFENSE 

Ashley HunsbergerThe Rollins women booters opened up their 2005 season with a road game at Flagler College and came away with a 1-0 victory. The Tars offense sputtered, only recording five shots, but one was all they would need.

 

Goalkeeper Francesca Nicoloso ( Tallahassee , Fla . / Lawton Chiles) stopped two shots in the first half and gathered three more saves in the second period to record her 14 th career shutout. The Tar defensive line of Alison Tradd (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary), Lindsay Taylor (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Community), Jen Finkel (Marlton, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) and Danielle Martin (Melbourne, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) handled the Saint's all night, giving them very few scoring chances.

 

The Tars game winning goal came from the feet of Ashley Hunsberger ( New Britain , Pa . / Central Bucks West) who found the back of the net after a Jeri Ostuw ( Daytona , Fla. /Spruce Creek) corner.

 

The Rollins women will also head to Alabama this weekend for a pair of matches. They clash with Alabama-Huntsville Friday, September 2 at 4:30 p.m. (CST) and Montevallo at noon (CST) on Sunday, September 4.
