MEN'S SOCCER NOTCHES A PAIR OF BIG VICTORIES

KEITH BUCKLEY BECOMES TARS WINNINGEST COACH

Rollins 3, West Florida 2

Rollins 4, Flagler 1

Season Record: 3-2

The Rollins men's soccer team got back to their winning ways last weekend, posting a pair of victories over two tough teams at the Barker Family Stadium at Cahall Sandspur Field. In a must win region game against West Florida on Friday, Rollins jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see the Argonauts come back and tie the score in the 75 th minute. Senior leadership then stepped in as Daniell Robertson ( Stockton-on-Tees , UK ) laid a ball into David Dwyer ( Preston , UK ) for the game winner in the 83 rd minute. David DwyerFreshman Jon Gruenewald ( Manlius , N.Y. ) began the scoring in the third minute as he gathered the rebound from a Dennis Chin ( Oviedo , Fla. ) shot and put it into the back of the net. Ryan Dodds ( Windermere , Fla. ) put Rollins up 2-0 in the 62 nd minute with a shot from the right side of the goal box with the assist going to Tres Loch ( Longwood , Fla. ). UWF fought back with scores in the 55 th and 75 th minute to knot the score at 2-2. Rollins moved in for an attack in the 83 rd minute, leading to Dwyer's game winner to give the Tars the 3-2 victory. Frazer Siddall ( Jersey , UK ) played all 90 minutes between the posts, allowing two goals and racking up a pair of saves.

Rollins hosted Flagler College in a Sunday matinee and cruised to a 4-1 victory. The Tars took a 1-0 lead before the crowd was able to sit down after the national anthem as Dodds blasted a shot past the Saints keeper just 12 seconds into the contest. The Tars went up 2-0 in the 36 th minute as Scott Murrell ( Naples , Fla. ) recorded his first collegiate goal with a rocket from 30 yards away that sailed over the keepers head. Rollins struck again in the 49 th minute as Robertson sent a free kick into the goal box right to Chris Chafin ( Lake Worth , Fla. ) to give the hosts a 3-0 cushion. Flagler got on the board in the 69 th minute as a shot ricocheted off a defender and past Tars keeper Dana Singer ( Longwood , Fla. ). The insurance goal came in the 89 th minute as Chafin again found the back of the net for his third goal of the year, this time off a Dodds pass into the goal box. Singer recorded the victory in his first career start, allowing a lone goal and gathering five saves.

The victory over Flagler gave coach Keith Buckley his 158 th career victory, making him the all-time winningest coach in Rollins history, passing Dr. Gordie Howell. In 15 seasons at the helm, Buckley has amassed a record of 158-87-16 while Howell went 157-62-16 from 1986-82 as the coach of the Tars.

The Rollins men's soccer team opens up defense of their Sunshine State Conference title this weekend against Saint Leo. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER SPLITS PAIR OF WEEKEND GAMES

West Florida 5, Rollins 0

Rollins 3, Armstrong Atlantic 0

Season Record: 4-1

Alexis SuttonThe Tars women's soccer team hosted #11 West Florida on Friday and were unable to find their grove, falling 5-0. They regrouped on Sunday and stepped up the defense to post a 3-0 win over Armstrong Atlantic. The Argonauts were dominate throughout, opening up a 3-0 lead going into halftime. The Tars had a pair of looks at the goal early in the game, but shots by Jeri Ostuw ( Daytona , Fla. ) and Whitney Chamberlin ( Natick , Mass. ) were stopped by the UWF keeper. The visitors kept the pressure on in the second period, scoring goals in the 52 nd and 77 th minute. The Tars fired three shots on goal in the half, but were unable to crack the scoreboard and dropped their first of the season.

A rejuvenated Tars team took the field on Sunday as Rollins took the offensive and smothered Armstrong Atlantic for a 3-0 shutout victory. Alexis Sutton ( West Columbia , S.C. ) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Tars offense. Fellow forward Laura Guild (Jupiter, Fla. ) put the Tars up early as AASU was whistled for a hand ball in the goal box and Guild slid the penalty kick past the keeper for a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. The game's second goal came in the 62 nd minute as a rebound from a Carissa Cartas ( Orlando , Fla. ) shot ended up at Sutton's feet, who then blasted it past the keeper. She scored her second of the game in the 75 th minute when the ball was sent into the box by Lindsay Taylor (Jupiter, Fla. ), redirected by Ashley Hunsberger ( New Britain , Pa. ) and put in the goal by Sutton. The Tars stellar defense controlled the game as they held the Pirates to just three shots the first half and none in the second. The unit of Taylor, Alison Tradd ( Longwood , Fla. ), Danielle Martin ( Melbourne , Fla. ) and Jen Finkel ( Marlton , N.J. ) led goalkeeper Francesca Nicoloso ( Tallahassee , Fla. ) to her 15 th career shutout.

Rollins matches up with Embry-Riddle on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Barker Family Stadium at Cahall-Sandspur Field before opening up Sunshine State Conference play on Sunday at Saint Leo. That match is scheduled for 3 p.m.

COLLEGE HONORS JOE JUSTICE ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 17 at 10 a.m. in the Knowles Memorial Chapel for legendary Rollins coach and athletic director Joe Justice, who passed away on July 25, 2005. He was 88.

Justice graduated from Rollins in 1940 and embarked on one of the most successful coaching careers in collegiate athletics. He coached the Tars baseball team from 1947 through 1971, posting a record of 482-287-13. During his 24 years at the helm, Rollins won 12 FIC Championships, advanced to the NAIA post season twice and made seven NCAA tournament appearances. In 1954, Justice's Tars advanced to the NCAA College World Series in Omaha and finished second behind the University of Missouri . Rollins still holds the distinction of being the smallest institution to reach the World Series.

Justice took over the reigns of the men's soccer program in 1957, its second year in existence, and went 5-1-0. He stepped down in 1967 with a record of 46-39-13 and two conference championships. Justice also coached golf for 11 years, basketball for two years and football for one year. He served as the College's Athletic Director from 1957 to 1981, transitioning the Tars into a new era of athletics that has produced multiple conference and national championships.

A founding father of the Sunshine State Conference, Justice was inducted into the SSC Hall of Fame in 1996. He is also a member of the College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, the Rollins Sports Hall of Fame, the Western North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, and the Central Florida Sports Hall of Fame.

The Rollins Athletic Department will have a special tribute to Joe Justice at the Sports Hall of Fame Breakfast Saturday, October 22.
