MEN'S
SOCCER SPLITS IN TOUGHEST TWO GAMES OF THE REGULAR SEASON
Last
Week:
Lynn
4, Rollins 2
Rollins
2, Nova Southeastern 1
Season
Record 6-3, 3-1 SSC
The
Tars battled through the toughest part of their schedule
last week, falling to top ranked Lynn 4-2 before rebounding
with a huge 2-1 win over Nova Southeastern on Saturday.
The
clash with the Fighting Knights was very physical as the
teams where whistled for a combined 35 fouls and eight yellow
cards.
Lynn
got on the board first in the 25 th minute with a score
off of a penalty kick to make the score 1-0. The Tars tied
the score in the 33 rd minute when Ryan Dodds (Windermere,
Fla.) was dragged down just inside the box to give the Tars
a free shot at the net. Defender Daniell Robertson (Stockton-on-Tees,
UK) blasted the PK past the keeper to make the score 1-1.
LU scored again with five minutes to go in the half and
took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break. In the 58 th minute,
the Fighting Knights blew the game open when a loose ball
in front of the Tars goal found the back of the net and
put the visitors up 3-1. Seventeen seconds later, Dodds
was again tackled in the box and set up another Robertson
penalty kick goal to get the Tars right back into it at
3-2. Lynn put the game away, however, with a score in the
83 rd minute to make the count 4-2. Goalkeeper Frazer Siddall
(Jersey, Channel Islands) played all 90 minutes between
the posts, recording four saves and surrendering four goals.
Rollins
traveled to Fort Lauderdale on Saturday and played in the
middle of a monsoon, but used their stingy defense to take
a 2-1 victory. The Tars held the Knights to just six shots
in the contest while Rollins put up 21, including 14 on
goal. Dodds and Chris Cerroni (Bexleyheath, UK) peppered
the Nova keeper all night as each blasted four shots on
goal. Cerroni got the scoring going in the 39 th minute
as he found the back of the net after passes from Ben Owen
( Oakham, UK) and Leslie Osei (Evanston, Ill.) to put Rollins
up 1-0. The score remained the same through halftime until
early in the second period when Chris Chafin (Lake Worth,
Fla.) put the Tars up 2-0 with an unassisted, breakaway
goal in the 52 nd minute. The hosts got on the board 10
minutes later with a goal off of a corner kick and pulled
to within one, 2-1. The Tars defense then dug in and held
the Knights to just one more shot the rest of the way out
to preserve the victory.
As
a team, the Tars are averaging 2.78 goals a game while holding
opponents to 1.44 per outing. Senior Ryan Dodds leads the
team with 16 points (six goals and four assists) while Chris
Chafin has racked up six goals and two assists.
Rollins
takes a step back from their Sunshine State Conference schedule
this week as they will host Baker University from Baldwin
City, Kansas on Friday, October 9 at 7 p.m.

WOMEN'S
SOCCER GOES 1-2 IN THREE ONE-GOAL GAMES
Last
Week:
Rollins
1, Nova Southeastern 0
Lynn
2, Rollins 1
Palm
Beach Atlantic 3, Rollins 2
Record:
6-5, 1-3 SSC
The
Rollins women opened their week with a Sunshine State Conference
triumph at Nova Southeastern, but fell in a pair of heartbreaking,
weekend matches against Lynn and Palm Beach Atlantic.
Playing
in the midst of a South Florida lightning storm that delayed
the game on two different occasions, the Tars used a late
first half goal and stout defense for a the SSC victory.
Freshman Cristina Saenz (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) put the
pressure on the Knights the entire evening, tallying six
shots, including four on goal. With the game scoreless,
Saenz took a pass from defender Alison Tradd (Longwood,
Fla.) and beat the keeper one on one for the score. Defenders
Jen Finkel (Marlton, N.J.), Lindsay Taylor (Jupiter, Fla.),
Dana Merrill (Melbourne Beach, Fla.), and Tradd played outstanding
the rest of the way as they held the Knights to only nine
shots in the Tars victory.
Conference
foe Lynn came to Cahall-Sandspur Field at Barker Family
Stadium on Friday with the Tars riding high after the SSC
win. Rollins took an early lead, but two goals, including
the game winner with under a minute to go, propelled the
Fighting Knights to the 2-1 win. Saenz struck again
for the Tars as she put Rollins up 1-0 with a goal 16 seconds
before the half as she took a Dana Trunzo (Port Orange,
Fla.) pass and beat the Lynn keeper. The Tars held to 1-0
advantage until the 61 st minute when a loose ball off of
a Lynn corner kick was sent into the net and knotted the
score at 1-1. The teams went back and fourth for the rest
of the game with neither school mounting an attack. As the
clock ticked under a minute, Lynn was able to get the ball
deep in the Tars zone and sent a shot toward the goal that
slipped past the Tars keeper and gave Rollins a tough to
swallow, 3-2 loss.
Right
back at it the next night against Palm Beach Atlantic, the
Tars again dominated the boxscore, but where unable to come
out on top. Saenz continued her stellar play from the forward
position as she again put Rollins up 1-0 with a goal in
the 55 th minute off of a Dana Merrill (Melbourne, Fla.)
corner kick and pass from Jeri Ostuw (Daytona, Fla.). The
Sailfish came right back and tied the score 56 seconds later
with a blast from the top of the goal box and into the net.
Rollins got back on top in the 57 th minute when Ostuw gathered
a pass from Jacqulyn Parsons (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) and
sent a rocket into the net for a 2-1 Tars lead. PBA came
back to tie the score at 2-2 in the 81 st minute when the
Tars where whistled for a foul in the penalty box and the
ensuing PK got past Rollins' keeper Francesca Nicoloso.
With just 18 ticks left and the game appearing to be headed
to overtime, the Sailfish sent a long pass toward the Rollins
side of the field that bounced around and eventually was
booted in for a stunning goal to make the score 3-2.
On
the year, Saenz leads the Tars offense with four goals and
one assist for nine points. Senior Laura Guild (Jupiter,
Fla.) is right behind her with three goals and two assists
while defender Alison Tradd paces the Tars with four assists.
Nicoloso has played all but 17:50 between the posts for
the Tars, allowing an average of 1.46 goals per game while
amassing 33 saves and four shutouts.
The
Rollins women's soccer team next matches up against nationally
ranked Tampa at Cahall-Sandspur Field on Wednesday, October
5 at 7 p.m. in another tough Sunshine State Conference match-up.
They then host Northwood University on Saturday, October
8 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL
TURNED BACK IN PAIR OF SSC MATCHES
Last
week:
Tampa
3, Rollins 0 (22-30,17-30,20-30)
Saint
Leo 3, Rollins 2 (30-25,24-30,28-30,30-24,9-15)
Record:
14-6, 1-4 SSC
The
Rollins women's volleyball team continued their journey
through the Sunshine State Conference schedule with games
at ampa and Saint Leo last week, but were turned back in
both contests.
Rollins
squared off with the nations' sixth ranked team and SSC
leader Tampa on Wednesday and fell 3-0. The Tars fought
hard in the opening game, but lost 30-22 before dropping
the next two, 30-17, 30-20. Tampa came out with a solid
offensive attack in the first game. In game one, the Spartans
built up a 25-16 lead before Rollins could respond to the
pressure. The Tars proved to be resilient as they fought
off four straight game points, but just couldn't climb back
into it as they fell 30-22. In the second game,
Tampa
never gave the Tars a chance. The Spartans built a 22-15
lead before pulling away and winning 30-17. Tampa hit a
staggering .514 against the Tars in the game and held the
Tars to a .065 percentage. In the third and final game Rollins
came out of the break with an early 7-5 lead. But that lead
was quickly erased as Tampa took advantage of several Rollins
hitting errors. The Tars finished the game with 10 errors
and lost the game 30-20. Rollins hurt themselves all night
with hitting errors, totaling 26 on the night. Their .077
hitting percentage was the second worst total on the season.
Tampa on the other hand hit a masterful .375 and killed
51 balls. They were also tough on defense digging out 61
balls to Rollins' total of 49. Lorana Orlandini (Miaraflores,
Lima Peru) racked up 10 kills and 24 attacks in the contest
and posted a .250 hitting percentage. Kim Cline (Lake Worth,
Fla.) grabbed 15 digs in the game while Lindsey Crosby (Largo,
Fla.) tallied nine. Freshman setter Lacey Malarky led Rollins
with 28 assists.
The
Tars week ended with a trip to Saint Leo for another SSC
match which turned into an epic battle, but didn't go Rollins'
way. The Tars started off well enough in the first game,
taking an early 16-11 lead. But the Lions quickly closed
in and tied the game at 25. The Tars responded to Saint
Leo's pressure and finished the game on a 5-0 run, winning
the first game 30-25. The Tars held Saint Leo to a meager
.027 hitting percentage, while overcoming 10 of their own
hitting errors in the game. Game two was extraordinarily
close throughout. The game was tied at 18 when the Lions
went on a 8-6 run. Saint Leo took care of the Tars from
there, going on a 4-0 run to win 30-24. The Lions flipped
the script on the Tars in the second game, holding Rollins
to a .053 hitting percentage and forcing 11 errors. The
third game was close yet again, with the two teams deadlocked
at 22. Saint Leo took a 22-25 lead, only to see Rollins
battle back to tie it at 27. But the Tars just didn't have
enough, as they dropped the game 30-28. The Tars stormed
back in the fourth game taking a 22-13 lead on the way to
a 30-24 win. But in the fifth game Rollins was beat to the
punch from the start. The Lions built a 6-10 lead and finished
off the Tars 15-9. The Tars had a tough night hitting the
ball. They had a season high 44 hitting errors, but still
managed to hit .115. The Tars had four players with double
digits in kills. Sophomore outside hitter Amy Barlow led
Rollins with 19 kills and also added 9 digs. Sophomore Christina
Reinders and junior Julia Caner each added 11 kills. Reinders
also led the team in hitting percentage, smashing home kills
at a rate of .474. The Rollins defense had two players with
double digits in digs. Sophomore libero Kim Cline finished
with 15 digs and junior Julia Caner had 10.
Rollins
begins a six game home stand this week as they host SSC
games against Nova Southeastern on Wednesday at 7 p.m.,
Lynn on Friday at 7 p.m. and Barry on Saturday at 4 p.m.
