Women:
The
Rollins women's tennis team battled through rainy weather
and the hot Florida sunshine to put together the cap on
a successful fall season at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational.

Purcell and Marnie Mahler highlighted the Tars effort as
Mahler reached the quarterfinals of singles flight A and
the pair advanced to the doubles flight A semi-finals. Mahler
downed Carolina Melo 6-3, 6-1 in Saturday's opener and defeated
Andrea Moncada from Nova Southeastern to advance to the
quarterfinals. She matched up with top seeded Emese Sulyos
of Jacksonville, but was turned back 6-2, 6-1. Purcell,

of UNF 6-0, 6-1 in her opening round before falling to Ana
Maria Zuleta of Barry University 6-1, 7-5.
In
doubles play, the duo came in as the second ranked team
and received a first round bye. They then defeated the team

VOLLEYBALL
PICKS UP MOMENTUM WITH BIG SSC WINS
Last

Rollins
College 3, Lynn 1 (30-24,28-30,30-28,30-17)
Barry

Record:
16-7, 3-5 SSC
The
Rollins women's volleyball team returned to their winning
ways last week, going 2-1 including a pair of huge conference
wins. The Tars dismantled Nova Southeastern in three games
on Wednesday and took care of Lynn 3-1 on Friday. Rollins
ran out of gas on Saturday as three matches in four days
caught up with them and they dropped a 3-0 decision to defending
national champion Barry.
In
the home stand opener against the Nova SE Knights, the Tars
came flying out of the gate and were in control the entire
contest. Rollins grabbed a quick 20-13 lead on their way
to an opening game 30-20 win. The Tars limited themselves
to only five hitting errors and forced the Knights into
eight errors of their own. The host Tars fell behind
12-10 early in game two, but tied the contest at 15 all
before roaring to a 30-19 win. Rollins once again limited
their mistakes, only hitting four errors in game two.
The Tars hitting percentage reached .364 in the second game.
The third game saw the Tars pull away from the Knights
late. The game was close with Nova leading 19-18,
when the Tars went on another run to take a 25-22 lead.
The Tars would only give up two more points as they
coasted to a 30-24 victory. The Tars had three players with
double digit kills. Sophomores Amy Barlow (Phoenix,
Ariz./Seton Catholic) and Christina Reinders (Orlando, Fla./Winter
Park) had their second good match in a row. Barlow,
the outside hitter, had 15 kills and only one hitting error
for a .424 hitting percentage. Reinders, the middle
blocker, had 12 kills and only two errors for a .435 hitting
percentage. Senior middle blocker Allison North (Mobile,
Ala./McGill Toolen Catholic) passed another milestone as
a Tar. With her seven kills on the night, North moved
into seventh place on Rollins all-time kills list.
Junior outside hitter Julia Caner (Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic
Heights) had her second straight double-double as she finished
with 12 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Kim Cline (Lake
Worth, Fla./John I. Leonard) had 16 digs to lead the defense.
Rollins
was nearly as dominate in Friday night's home match with
Lynn as the Tars cruised to a 3-1 victory. They again used
large runs to pull away from the Fighting Knights.
With the opening game tied at five, Rollins went on a 13-2
run to take an 18-7 lead. The Knights responded with
an 11-6 run of their own to bring the score to 24-19 before
another Tars run finished the Knights off 30-24.
The second game was a back and forth battle where
neither team had a lead of more than two. But with
the score tied at 25, Lynn went up 27-25 and was able to
maintain their two-point lead to win 30-28. The third
game was another seesaw battle, and once again the leads
were small throughout. The Tars went up 25-23 late
in the game and were able to withstand the Knights charge
and win the game 30-28. The fourth game was pure
domination by the Tars squad as Rollins held leads of 12-9
and 22-12 in the 30-17 victory. Caner shrugged off eight
hitting errors to post her third double-double in a row
with 14 kills and 17 digs with the 17 digs establishing
a new season high. Sophomore right side hitter Lorena
Orlandini (Miraflores, Lima Peru/Nuestra Senora Del Carmen)
had a big night with 15 kills and two blocks. Barlow
had her third straight match with double figure kills as
she posted 13, and also added 15 digs to the defense. Cline
had a career night for the Tars once again as she posted
25 digs and added four services aces to the cause.
The
following afternoon, the Tars hosted defending national
champion Barry University and fell 3-0. Barry started off
the first game by opening up a sizeable 17-10 lead on the
Tars. Rollins would close within two, but the Bucs
would shut the door on the rally, and take the first game
30-25. Barry pulled away from the Tars mid-way through
the second game. With the score tied at 12-12, the
Bucs went on a 8-1 run to leave the Tars mesmerized, with
the score 20-13. Barry never looked back from there
and finished the game with a 30-23 win. The third
game saw Barry pull away late. After trailing early
by as much as five, Rollins pulled to within three at 23-20.
But the Bucs refused to let Rollins get any closer
from there as they maintained their three point lead throughout
the rest of the game and won 30-27.
Rollins
hit the ball fairly well against the Barry defense, but
they were still not able to come up with the victory.
Rollins hit for a .276 average, but it still looked miniscule
compared to Barry's .338 mark. Rollins held themselves
to only 16 errors in the match, which was their fourth lowest
total of the season. The Tars struggled with their
passing and were hurt by the limited front-line play of
junior outside hitter Julia Caner who injured her hand.
Rollins
had only two players with double digit kills. Barlow
had her third straight match in double digits as she posted
16 kills and hit for a .364 percentage while also adding
six digs. Freshman outside hitter Stephanie
Nichols (Lake Mary, Fla./The Masters Academy) came off of
the bench and produced very well for the Tars hitting for
13 kills. Cline again led the defense with 17 digs
with Caner chipping in 11 digs.
The
Tars take a break from their Sunshine State Conference schedule
this week as they will host the 2005 South Region Challenge
on October 14 and 15 in Winter Park. The Tars take on Francis
Marion at 4 p.m. on Friday before battling Carson-Newman
at 1 p.m. and USC-Aiken at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Visit http://www.rollins.edu/athletics/volleyball/vb_southregionchallenge.shtml

MEN'S
SOCCER DROPS CLOSE ONE TO BAKER
Last
week:
Baker
University 2, Rollins 1
Record:
6-4, 3-1 SSC
The
Tars men's soccer team took a break from conference action
and hosted Baker University from Kansas, but were unable
to
overcome the visitors from America's heartland and fell
2-1. The Wildcats immediately started the game on a mission
to score and were able to get a shot past Tars goalkeeper
Dana Singer (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) in the 7th minute.
A Baker defender sent a pass over the Rollins defense
to the right side of the goal box where a forward gathered
the pass and blasted a shot. The ball deflected off of a
charging Rollins defender and slid into the goal for a 1-0
lead. Just seven minutes later, the Wildcats struck again
with some nifty passing in front of the goal that resulted
in a goal from the six-yard box to give Baker a 2-0 lead.
The score remained the same through halftime until the Tars
got going in the 79 th minute. Chris Cerroni (Bexleyheath,
UK/Bexley Grammer) notched his third goal of the season
when senior David Dwyer (Preston, UK/Walton le Dale)
sent a long kick up to the forward line that was gathered
by senior Ryan Dodds (Windermere, Fla./Edgewater).
Dodds took a shot that was blocked by the Cats keeper and
bounced out to Cerroni who sent a high shot over
the keeper's head into the goal. Rollins spent the
next 11 minutes pressuring the Wildcats, pushing all of
their players forward. However, they were unable
to get the ball into the net and the final horn sounded
with the Wildcats ahead 2-1. Baker finished the game with
a 12-10 advantage in shots and the teams were even with
five corner kicks apiece. Singer finished with the
game with four saves.
The
Tars will continue to take a break from conference play
on Monday, October 10, when they play host to Berry College
from Rome, Georgia. The game is scheduled to begin
at 7:00 p.m. in Winter Park.

WOMEN'S
SOCCER STRUGGLES THROUGH TOUGH WEEK
Last
week:
Tampa
6, Rollins 1
Northwood
2, Rollins 1 (OT)
Record:
6-7, 1-4 SSC
The
Rollins women's soccer team has fallen on hard times recently
as they continue to battle every game, but can't seem to
catch
any breaks. Coming off back to back last second, one-goal
losses the Tars set their sights on SSC foe Tampa last Wednesday.
The 12 th ranked Spartans and their powerful offense proved
to be too much for Rollins as the visitors took away a 6-1
victory. The Spartans came into the game having already
scored 41 goals on the season, while allowing only six and
they were able to keep their offense moving against
the Tars. Rollins lone goal came in the 41 st minute when
junior Alison Tradd (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary) sent a free
kick into the goal area and Jacquelyn Parsons (Altamonte
Springs, Fla./Lake Mary) tapped the ball home, making the
score 4-1 in favor of Tampa. UT continued to put the pressure
on for the rest of the contest and put up two more scores
en route to the five goal setback of the Tars.
Rollins
then matched up with non-conference opponent Northwood University
on Saturday and fell in overtime by a score of 2-1 in a
very physical game that saw five yellow cards and one red
card issued. With the Seahawks already holding a one goal
advantage in the 60 th minute, Tradd sent one of her patented
free kicks into the goal box, where junior Lindsay Taylor
(Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Community) made a sliding attempt
at the ball and sent it into the net for her first goal
of the season and second of her career. Over the
course of the next 36 minutes and change, the Tars had three
goals called back, which had they been allowed, would have
given the Tars the victory. Sophomore Jeri Ostuw
(Daytona Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek) appeared to have her
third goal of the season in the 79th minute, but was ruled
to be obstructing the Seahawks goalie, nullifying her goal.
On the second instance, Tradd sent a free kick towards
goal in the 83rd minute and the ball bounced off the crossbar
and the goalie and came out of the goal into play and was
ruled by the officials to not be a goal. The game
was still knotted at one apiece after the first 90 minutes
and headed to overtime when senior Laura Guild (Jupiter,
Fla./Cardinal Newman) put a shot past the Seahawks keeper
into the net, but a late call ruled her offside which would
have given the Tars the victory early in the extra period.
Rollins pressured the Seahawks defense throughout the overtime,
but in the 97th minute, a Seahawk forward broke free and
came in on goal all alone where she was brought down by
the pursuing defenders. The officials awarded Northwood
a penalty kick, which was converted for the win.
The
Tars get back into the Sunshine State Conference schedule
on Saturday, October 15, when the take on Eckerd College.
Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cahall-Sandspur
Field in Winter Park.
