ROLLINS COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Chris Cerroni

Men's Soccer

Junior

Bexleyheath, UK

Junior forward Chris Cerroni has been on fire for the Tars men's soccer team, rolling up five goals and two assists in just five games on the pitch. Sidelined earlier in the year due to an illness, Cerroni came back two weeks ago and has since been playing the best soccer of his career. Last week he tallied a goal and an assist in each of the Tars victories. Against Berry, he notched the go-ahead score in the 40 th minute with a nifty move to beat the visitor's keeper. In Rollins' SSC game against Eckerd, he got the scoring going in the 31 st minute as he blew past three Triton defenders and put a shot in the back of the net.

MEN'S SOCCER SCORES PAIR OF BIG WINS

Last week:

Rollins 4, Berry 3

Rollins 4, Eckerd 3

Record: 8-4, 4-1 SSC

The Rollins men's soccer team showcased their high powered offense last week and posted a pair of big victories, each by a score of 4-3. The Tars held off Berry College after an early 4-1 lead on Monday, before keeping pace in the Sunshine State Conference with the one goal win over Eckerd.

Against Berry, Tres Loch (Longwood, Fla.) opened the scoring for the Tars in the 26th minute off of a set play out of a free kick. The Vikings were whistled for a foul, giving the Tars a free kick just outside the goal box. Chris Cerroni (Bexleyheath, UK) stepped forward to take the try and placed the ball in front of the net where Loch got his head on the ball and sent it into the net for his first goal of the year and a 1-0 Tars lead. Nine minutes later the Vikings evened the score when speedy senior Jon Mastrangelo scored his first of two goals on the night. He gathered the ball inside the goal box and put a hard shot past Tars goalkeeper Dana Singer (Longwood, Fla.). Rollins answered four minutes later and went up 2-1 when Cerroni notched his fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Scott Murrell (Naples, Fla.) sent a header in the direction of Cerroni who gathered the ball and calmly placed his shot around the Viking keeper. After the break, Chris Chafin (Lake Worth, Fla.) caught fire and scored the first of his two goals only 32 seconds into the half. The junior took control of a loose ball just outside of the goal box and sent it to the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Nine minutes later sophomore Jon Gruenewald (Manlius, N.Y.) sent a cross from the left side of the field right to the feet of a charging Chafin, who one touched the ball into the back of the net. Berry put up two late goals, but the Tars held tight for the victory.

Rollins got back to Sunshine State Conference play on Friday night as they hosted Eckerd in Winter Park. Once again, coach Keith Buckley's squad gathered an early lead, only to have the opponents fight back and make it close. Cerroni continued his fantastic play as Juan Kusnir (Maitland, Fla.) lofted a pass to the junior forward who then raced past three defenders and beat the keeper to give Rollins a 1-0 lead in the 31 st minute. The hosts then began their offensive onslaught early in the second half as Kusnir exploded for goals in the 53 rd and 62 nd minutes to give Rollins a commanding 3-0 lead. The first came after a Chafin pass which was blasted into the back of the net with the second coming on a tap in after a Ryan Dodds (Windermere, Fla.) cross. Eric Vergati (Plano, Texas) made it 4-0 in favor of the Tars when he stole the ball at midfield and rocked a hard curving shot around the Tritions keeper in the 68 th minute. Just as their previous game, Rollins surrendered a few late goals, but tightend up and secured the victory.

On the year, Chafin leads the team with 19 points on eight goals and three assists. Dodds is right behind with 18 points (six goals and six assists) while Cerroni has put up 12 points in just five games.

The men's soccer team continues their journey through the SSC schedule on Tuesday, October 18 when they will host Tampa at 7 p.m. The contest will be the Tars last home game of the regular season and the team will be honoring seniors David Dwyer, Ben Owen, Daniell Robertson, Ryan Dodds and Matthew Gowan.

WOMEN'S SOCCER BACK ON TRACK WITH SSC VICTORY

Last week:

Rollins 4, Eckerd 1

Record: 7-7, 2-4 SSC

The Rollins women's soccer team shook the monkey off their backs and returned to winning form with a 4-1 triumph over Eckerd last Friday.

The Tars dominated both sides of the field the entire game as they held a 30-5 advantage in shots and 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Jeri Ostuw (Daytona, Fla.) opened up scoring in the 15 th minute with a tap in score after passes from seniors Laura Guild (Jupiter, Fla.) and Whitney Chamberlin (Natick, Mass.). Chamberlin then hooked up with Guild in the 18 th minute as Guild put a shot over the keepers head and gave Rollins a 2-0 lead. Chamberlin got into the act 38 minutes later with a goal of her own off an Allison Tradd (Longwood, Fla.) pass to give the Tars a commanding 3-0 advantage. The Tritons cracked the scoreboard in the 81st minute when with a loose ball score in front of the Tars net to make the count 3-1.   The Tars sealed it up in the 85th minute as Jacquelyn Parsons (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) sent a cross into the goal box where Guild punched it past the Eckerd keeper for her team leading fifth goal of the season. The Tars defense of Tradd, Lindsay Taylor (Jupiter, Fla.), Jen Finkel (Marlton, N.J.) and Danielle Martin (Melbourne, Fla.) controlled the tempo from the opening kick and made it easy for keeper Fran Nicoloso, who got the win with one save.

Guild's big weekend moved her to the top of the Tars season box score with 13 points on five goals and three assists. Cristina Saenz (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) has rolled up 10 points on the year with four goals and two assists while Tradd leads in assists with seven.

Rollins will return to action next Sunday, October 23 for the regular season home finale against Newberry College at noon. Prior to the game, the senior class will be honored.

VOLLEYBALL TAKES TWO OF THREE AT SOUTH REGION CHALLENGE

Last week:

Rollins 3, Francis Marion 2 (24-30, 30-24, 30-22, 24-30, 15-9)

Rollins 3, Carson-Newman 0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-23)

USC-Aiken 3, Rollins 0 (30-23, 30-22, 30-27)

Record: 18-8, 3-5 SSC

The Rollins volleyball team took a weekend off from the SSC schedule and hosted the South Region Challenge with some of the very best teams in the South. The Tars took victories in two of their three matches, including avenging an earlier loss to Francis Marion.

The Tars began the tournament against the Patriots and came out on top of a hard fought five game battle. Francis Marion came out with a lot of energy and gave the Tars problems in the first game. The Patriots gained a 20-14 advantage and kept plugging away to take the game 30-23. The second game was close throughout with the score going back and forth the entire game. The score was tied at 24 when the Tars went on a 6-0 run to win the game. The Tars used superb defense to hold the Patriots to a dismal .062 hitting percentage in the second frame. Rollins came out ready to fight in the third game taking a commanding 15-9 lead to start off the third. Francis Marion would pull to within two at 23-21, but Rollins wouldn't allow them to advance any closer as they took the game 30-22. The Patriots showed a lot of heart and determination by clawing back into the match in the fourth game by winning 30-24. But in the fifth game the Tars just seemed to want it a little more as they won 15-9. Four Tars had double figure dig totals and as a team they dug out a season high 90 balls. Sophomore libero and Sunshine State Defensive player of the week Kim Cline (Lake Worth, Fla.) finished with a team high 21 digs. Junior Julia Caner (Boca Raton, Fla.) added 14 while senior Lindsey Crosby (Largo, Fla.) and sophomore Amy Barlow (Phoenix, Ariz.) each added 13 for the Tars. Senior middle blocker Allison North (Mobile, Ala.) had one of her best matches of the year finishing with 18 kills and a .375 hitting percentage. Sophomore Stephanie Nichols (Lake Mary, Fla.) got back on the right track putting up 19 kills to lead all scorers. Sophomore setter Lacey Malarky (Lawrence, Kan.) contributed a game high 60 assists to the offensive effort as well.

Rollins then played a pair of matches the following day and split, beating Carson-Newman 3-0 and falling to the University of South Carolina-Aiken in three games. In the first game against Carson Newman the Tars came out a little flat, allowing the Eagles to hang with them. The score was tied at 18 when Rollins finally made its move and doubled up the Eagles in a 12-6 run to take the game 30-24. In the second game Rollins took control early, building a 20-14 lead and finished off Carson Newman 30-21. The Tars hit for a sizzling .400 percentage while smashing home 17 kills. In the third game the Rollins defense simply outmatched the Eagles' hitters. Rollins held Carson Newman to 11 kills and forced 10 errors for a .019 percentage. They took the game 30-23.   Barlow finished with 13 kills and 6 digs while hitting for a .333 percentage to lead the Tars. Sophomore Malarky had 42 assists and fought for 10 digs on the defensive end while junior hitter Julia Caner had nine kills and 12 digs, which led the team.

Against USC-Aiken, the Tars struggled early, dropping the first frame 30-23. In the second game the offense didn't fair much better as they managed a .029 hitting percentage and hit 10 errors in the 30-22 loss. Rollins played its best game of the match in the third game but still fell a little short, falling 30-27. The Tars offense couldn't figure out the tough Pacer defense. The Pacers dug out 49 balls, forced 24 hitting errors and held Rollins to a .096 percentage. Sophomore hitter Lorena Orlandini (Miraflores, Lima Peru) proved to be a bright spot for the Tars. She finished with nine kills and a .409 hitting percentage while Caner hit for 8 kills and also dug out 11 balls.

Orlandini leads the Tars on the season with 285 kills with North adding 269 and a team best .340 hitting percentage. Setter Malarky is on pace to smash the season record for assists in a season as she has 1,195 on the year with the record standing at 1,421. Cline leads the team in digs with 434 on the year.

Rollins will be back in action on Thursday October 20 th , when they will do battle with Sunshine State Conference rival Tampa in Warden Arena. The Tars will be looking for a little pay back after the Spartans beat Rollins back in September three games to none. This will be the last game of a season long seven match home stand for the Tars. So come on out and support Rollins volleyball Thursday at 7:00pm in Warden Arena.

SSC Cross Country Preview:

The 2005 Sunshine State Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships will be held at Central Winds Park in Winter Springs on Saturday, October 22.  Hosted by Rollins College, the championships will consist of two races.  Starting at 7:30 a.m., the men's race will cover a distance of 8,000 meters.  The women's race will be a 6,000-meter event, with the gun scheduled to go off at 8:15 a.m.

Host Rollins will be joined by teams from Florida Southern, Florida Tech, Nova Southeastern, Saint Leo and Tampa in the men's and women's divisions.

Florida Southern will be seeking their ninth consecutive men's championship and 10th in the last 11 years.  The Moccasins have won more SSC men's titles (nine) than any other conference school, closely followed by Florida Tech, winners of six league championships from 1984 through 1991.

On the women's side, the University of Tampa will be trying to capture its fourth consecutive SSC championship, and fifth overall, which would match Florida Southern conference record.  Last year, the Spartans claimed their third conference title, which comes on the heels of Florida Southern's string of five consecutive SSC women's championships from 1997 through 2001.

A very talented group of individual runners will compete for team and individual honors on Saturday, as 13 of 20 all-conference runners from last year are scheduled to compete.  Six members of the 2004 All-SSC women's cross country team will see action on Saturday, while five all-conference selections from a year ago will take part in the men's race.
