MEN'S
SOCCER SPLITS PAIR OF SSC MATCHES
Last
week:
Rollins
4, Tampa 2
Fla.
Tech 5, Rollins 2
Record:
9-5, 5-2 SSC
The
Rollins men's soccer team stayed on pace in the Sunshine
State Conference with a big win over Tampa on Tuesday, but
were shocked by Florida Tech on Saturday afternoon and dropped
just their second conference match of the year.
Against
Tampa, the Tars spotted the visiting Spartans a pair of
goals, but posted four unanswered for the 4-2 victory on
Senior Night and Homecoming at Cahall-Sandspur Field and
Barker Family Stadium. The game got out to an ominous start
for the Tars as they dropped a goal to the Spartans with
just 40 seconds having expired from the clock. Twelve minutes
later the Spartans reached the scoreboard again on a Tars
error as a Rollins defender sent a pass backwards toward
goalkeeper Dana Singer (Longwood, Fla.) who misplayed the
ball and could only watch as the it rolled into the net.
The rare own goal by the Tars put Tampa up 2-0. Despite
the score, Rollins continued to fight and scored four consecutive
goals to win the game. Ryan Dodds (Windermere, Fla.) notched
his first goal of the game off of an assist from freshman
Jon Gruenewald (Manlius, N.Y.) and his second goal was a
nice header from a Daniell Robertson (Stockton-on-Tees,
U.K.) free kick, taken from just outside the goal box. Dodds'
eighth goal on the season tied the game at two apiece with
18 minutes left to play in the game. Chris Cerroni (Bexleyheath,
UK) maintained his fantastic play as just five minutes later
he sent a shot past the Spartans goalkeeper off a feed from
Gruenewald. The Tars sealed their victory seven minutes
later as Cerroni took a pass from sophomore Leslie Osei
(Evanston, Ill.) and was one vs. one with the goalie. Cerroni
played a nice shot past the keeper for his seventh goal
of the season. The Tars finished the game with 16 shots
while the Spartans could only muster five. The Tars also
had an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks. Tars goalkeeper Singer
finished the game with three saves while surrendering the
two scores.
Saturday
brought a trip to Melbourne to clash with the Panthers of
Florida Tech in a rematch of the season's opening tilt.
Rollins was victorious in the season opening game by a score
of 5-1, but the Panthers got the best of the Tars in the
revenge game, downing Rollins 5-2. The loss hurts Rollins'
chances of a second straight Sunshine State Conference title
as now they have their sights set on the NCAA Regional.
Scoring goals for the Tars were seniors Ben Owen (Oakham,
UK) and Daniell Robertson (Stockton-on-Tees, UK). Robertson's
goal came in the 30th minute off a penalty kick. The Panthers
scored the opening goal of the game in the 16th minute when
they were awarded a free kick at the top of the penalty
box and senior Ramiro Rodriguez sent his kick past Tars
goalkeeper Dana Singer (Longwood, Fla.). The Tars score
was set up when junior Juan Kusnir (Maitland, Fla.) was
brought down in the goal box and the Tars were awarded a
penalty kick. Robertson stepped up and put his third PK
of the season into the net to tie the game at one. Owen's
goal in the 35th minute gave Rollins a 2-1 lead. He took
a pass from Kusnir at the top of the goal box and sent a
one touch shot past Panthers goalkeeper Cory Collins. The
Tars lead was short lived as the Panthers answered with
a score of their own 90 seconds later. The two teams went
into half-time tied 2-2, with Rollins leading on the shot
count 8-4. The two teams battled back and forth in the second
half until Al-Sharif struck again in the 65th minute. Ten
minutes later the hosts scored on a free kick and sealed
up the win in the 84 th minute off of a good penalty kick.
Due
to the after effects of Hurricane Wilma, the Tars game at
Palm Beach Atlantic, which was scheduled for Tuesday, October
25 has been postponed. No make-up date has been set.
ROWING
TEAMS OPEN SEASON WITH SUCCESSFUL TRIPS NORTH
The
Rollins rowing team sent a pair and varsity 4+ to the Head
of the Tennessee in Knoxville and came back with a victory
while the other varsity 4+ boat took seventh at the prestigious
Head of the Charles in Boston.
In
Tennessee, the men's championship 4+ team of Colleen Reagan,
Shawn Tavares, Skylar Wilson, Eric Fraser and Sean Weigold
captured the first place trophy for the first time in Rollins
history. In the event, crews are sent off one at a time
and are racing against the clock opposed to standard side-by-side
racing. Rollins started fourth in the eight-team race and
was the second boat to finish as they made up 32 seconds
on the first boat. The Tars kicked it into high gear right
from the start and stopped the clock at 17:53.29, more than
28 seconds head of runner-up Tennessee-Chattanooga. Emory
took third with a time of 18:31.02 while Georgia Southern
finished fourth in 18:44.77. The Tars also competed
in the men's open pair as Tyler Kartzinel and Barry DeNicola
finished in first place with a time of 21:05.79 over second
place University of Tennessee.
The
Tars were almost equally as successful in Boston as the
varsity 4+ boat of Lindsay Erdmann (cox), Drew Brodnax,
Collin Campbell, Brandon Koch and David Bagby took seventh
among 19 schools at the prestigious Head of the Charles.
Rollins posted a time of 18:15.60 despite being held up
on two different occasions by crews who would not yield
the right of way. Colgate won the race with a time of 17:38.47
with Bowdoin taking second in a time of 17:50.60. Rollins
finished ahead of many top schools including Florida Tech,
Duke and Boston College.
The
Rollins crew teams continue their Fall season on Saturday,
November 5 at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
SWIM
TEAMS HIT THE WATER THIS WEEK WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR
2005-06
Celebrating
their 10 th season as an NCAA sport, the Rollins men's and
women's swim teams are looking to parlay last season's successes
into a banner 2005-06. Head coach Rich Morris is sporting
talent and depth on his squads that both finished last season
ranked in the nation's top 20 (men 18 th ; women 17 th ).
The
men's team enters the year with depth in almost every event
and boasts may individuals who should make a run to the
NCAA Division II National Championships in Indianapolis
this spring. Junior Trevor Hughes (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long
Beach HS) is coming off a fantastic 2004-05 season in which
he posted the 17 th best time in Division II in the 100
fly. Chris Sparks (Greenville, Del./The Tatnal School) made
a splash in his freshman campaign last year and comes back
as Rollins' top swimmer in the 200 IM. Co-captains
Sean Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) and
Paul Wahbe (Towson, Md./Loyola HS) will anchor the distance
events this year and will look to lead the Tars talented
freshman class. Newcomer Carson Nicely (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden
HS) was a high school All-American and should make an immediate
impact in the freestyle events. Also looking to make his
mark early in the freestyle events will be freshman Jonathan
Mastin (Miami Fla./Miami Country Day), who was a four-time
Florida state qualifier in high school. Fellow freshman
Jeff Mueller (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) enters his first season
with the Tars this year and will be looked upon to hold
his own in the distance races.
On
the women's side, the Tars return a group of young, talented
swimmers that should rank among the nation's best in their
events come the end of the season. Sophomore Corie Kelly
(Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) had a stellar freshman year
in the 100 fly and comes into this season with high expectations.
Fellow sophomore Kymm Dutch (Hopewell, N.J./Lawrenceville
Prep) also had a great first year in the pool for Rollins
last season and will look to continue her success in the
backstroke. The Tars will be without the services of distance
swimmer Andrea Bartman (York, Pa./Roland Park Country School)
and breaststroker Lauren Totzke (Dalton, Ga./Dalton HS)
for the first part of the year as both are studying abroad.
Senior Claire Engleman (Marietta, Ga./Alan C. Pope HS) and
Totzke are the co-captains this season and will look to
set the pace for a solid group of newcomers. Jessica Rothbiend
(Pinehurst N.C./The O'Neal School) will be looked upon to
make an immediate impact in the breaststroke while fellow
freshman Kylene Dey (Dowinington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) should
be a player in the Tars distance crew.
As
usual, the Tars will be competing against some of the best
schools in the South this season. Perennial powerhouse Tampa
will bring their usual strong team to the table and along
with Florida Southern and Saint Leo, make up some very tough
meets for the Tars. Rollins also travels to Atlanta this
season to clash with Division III Emory, who regularly places
in the nation's top three. The entire season kicks off with
a busy weekend, beginning with a meet against Savannah College
of Art & Design on Friday, October 28 at 4 p.m. in Winter
Park. Rollins then turns around and hosts Saint Leo at the
Alfond Pool on Saturday, October 29 at 1 p.m.
