ROLLINS COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Julia Caner

Volleyball – Senior

Boca Raton, Fla.

Julia Caner (Boca Raton, Fla.) helped the Tars volleyball team to three big victories this week by smashing home a team high 52 kills last week for an average of 3.25 kills per game.   Her team leading 14 kills against #10 Florida Southern helped Rollins achieve one of the biggest upsets in the Sunshine State Conference this season.   But it's not just Caner's offense that draws so much attention.   Julia's defensive skill is almost just as impressive.   Caner totaled 49 digs all together last week for an average of 3.06 per game.    She had a season high 21 digs in a win against Florida Tech, and she also smashed home 21 kills in a loss against West Florida.   Caner was able to post double-doubles in kills and digs in three out of the Tars four matches last week.

Julia Caner is a junior from Olympic Heights High School in Boca Raton, Fla.   She is the daughter of Ann and Radames Caner.   And she is an international business major.

CONFERENCE SOCCER TOURNAMENT CANCELLED

Due to the lingering effects of Hurricane Wilma, the Sunshine State Conference has announced that its tournament for men's and women's soccer has been cancelled. The tournament was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 1, but with some of the conference schools still unable to open, the conference has decided to cancel the tournament.

The Rollins College women's soccer team will finish the 2005 season with a record of 8-8-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the SSC, while the men's soccer team will finish at 10-5-0 overall and 6-2-0 in the SSC. With the tournament cancelled both teams will have to wait and see if they receive an invitation to participate in the NCAA Division II South Regionals. Last season the men's team hosted the South Regionals at Cahall-Sandspur Field at Barker Family Stadium. The Regional tournament is scheduled to begin on Thursday, November 10.

MEN'S SOCCER SEASON ENDS WITH 4-2 DRUBBING OF FLORIDA SOUTHERN

Last week:

Rollins 4, Florida Southern 2

Season Record: 10-5; 6-2 SSC

The 2005 men's soccer season came to an abrupt halt last week as the effects of Hurricane Wilma on three south Florida schools forced the cancellation of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. The decision left the Tars on the outside looking in of the South Region standings with their final regular season game against Florida Southern providing no help in their ranking. SSC foes Lynn and Saint Leo sit atop the region standings, which would have set the Tars up with a “win and your in” situation at the SSC tourney.

Now looking at their last game of the season, Rollins headed to Florida Southern last Saturday for their 2005 finale. On the chilly October night, the Tars used their lively offense to post a decisive 4-2 win over the Moccasins. Senior Ryan Dodds (Windermere, Fla.) opened the scoring for the Tars when he notched his ninth goal of the season in the 17th minute off a feed from fellow senior Ben Owen (Oakham, UK). The Tars held the lead for nine minutes until the Moccasins leading scorer Asa Pepia scored his tenth goal of the season off a nice passing sequence up the right side of the field from Ola Sandquist and Emil Eliasson.

The two teams retreated to their respective locker rooms for halftime with the score tied 1-1 and the Tars leading on the shot chart 8-3. Fifty-eight seconds into the second half the Tars struck again as freshman Jon Gruenewald (Manlius, N.Y.) sent a cross into the goal box that Chris Cerroni (Bexleyheath, UK) put into the back of the net for his first goal of the evening. The assist to Gruenewald was his team leading eighth of the season.   In the 62nd minute Rollins was awarded a free kick forty yards from the goal. Senior Daniell Robertson (Stockton-on-Tees, UK) played a perfect kick to Tres Loch (Longwood, Fla.), who one touched the ball into the back of the net. Loch 's second goal of the season put the Tars up 3-1 with 28 minutes remaining in the game. Florida Southern still had the fight in them as Pepia recorded his second goal of the game for the Moccasins in the 83rd minute on a breakaway goal. However, Rollins quickly answered back and in the 86th minute when Robertson sent a long ball up field that was gathered by Cerroni, who flicked the ball over goalie Clint Harris' head into the net for his ninth goal of the season. Cerroni's goal put the Tars up 4-2, where it remained until the final whistle blew. The Tars finished the game leading on total shots 13-7. Sophomore Frazer Siddall (Jersey, Channel Islands) recorded the victory for the Tars, recording three saves on the evening.

The victory assures the Tars of another 10 win season, a run that has lasted over the last eight years. With the cancellation of the season ending SSC tournament, the Tars will end their '05 campaign on a high note with their 4-2 victory and bid farewell to one of the most successful classes in Rollins soccer history.

Dodds and Cerroni each tallied nine goals on the season with Cerroni doing so in just eight games of action. Gruenewald put up a team best eight assists on the season, followed by Cerroni and Robertson with six each. Siddall rolled up a record of 7-4 between the posts in 2005, tallying 27 saves and surrendering 1.90 goals per game.

The Tars will take the pitch again in August to begin the 2006 season.

WOMEN'S SOCCER EVENS FINAL RECORD; SPLITS BETWEEN TECH AND SOUTHERN

Last Week:

Rollins 2, Florida Southern 1

Season Record: 8-8, 3-5 SSC

The Rollins women's soccer team also had their season come to a close last week as the effects of Hurricane Wilma forced the cancellation of the season ending Sunshine State Conference Tournament. Rollins began the week with a tough 4-1 loss at Florida Tech, but rebounded for a weekend victory at Florida Southern that evened their final season record at 8-8.

Against the Panthers of Florida Tech, Rollins came out of the gates fired up and scored three consecutive goals in the first 40 minutes of action. The scoring began in the 16th minute as sophomore Ericka Hildreth sent her shot sailing off the right post, where senior Kelli Huarte gathered the ball and put it into the back of the net. Twelve minutes later, Hildreth notched her first goal of the game as she drove past the Tars defenders and slid her shot past Tars goalkeeper Francesca Nicoloso (Tallahassee, Fla.). Hildreth struck again in the 40th minute as she again got behind the Tars defenders, ending up one vs. one with Nicoloso, scoring her ninth goal of the season. The goal put the Panthers up 3-0, where it remained until halftime.

The teams returned to the field in the second half and sophomore Cristina Saenz (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) notched her fifth goal of the season just 45 seconds into the half. Junior Jacquelyn Parsons (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) sent a pass to Saenz, who shot the ball high over the goalkeeper's head into the back of the net. Saenz's goal was the only offensive output the Tars could muster, while the Panthers were able to score one more goal in the 50th minute from the foot of Huarte.

The Tars led in total shots 14-12 and corner kicks 5-1, but came up short on the scoreboard.

Saturday brought a trip to Lakeland for a match against Florida Southern where the Tars came out with a 2-1 victory. In her last game as a Tar, senior midfielder Whitney Chamberlin (Natick, Mass.) scored both goals for Rollins, while junior goalkeeper Francesca Nicoloso (Tallahassee, Fla.) made two saves to secure the victory for the Tars.

The Moccasins struck first as Becky McQuain scored her fifth goal of the season in the 15th minute off a pass from Amy Holsenbeck. Chamberlin's first goal of the game came in the 32nd minute off of a scramble in front of the net. Her second goal came five minutes later as freshman Danielle Martin (Melbourne, Fla.) sent a long pass into the front of the goal that bounced out to Chamberlin, who put a hard shot past the keeper. The goal was Chamberlin's third of the season and was the eventual game winner.

The Tars dominated the game, recording 12 shots on goal to the Moccasin's four. In the first half, the Tars held the Moccasin's to only one shot, which was the first goal of the game. For the rest of the half, the Moccasin's were shut down by the Tars defense composed of juniors Alison Tradd (Longwood, Fla.) and Lindsay Taylor (Jupiter, Fla.), Martin, Chamberlin and freshman Dana Trunzo (Port Orange, Fla.).

The Tars offensive unit pressured the Moccasin's two goalies all afternoon. Sophomore Cristina Saenz (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) had three shots while senior Laura Guild (Jupiter, Fla.) recorded two. In the midfield line, juniors Ashley Hunsberger (New Britain, Pa.) and Jacquelyn Parsons (Altamonte Springs, Fla.), sophomore Jeri Ostuw (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and freshman Carissa Cartas (Orlando, Fla.) recorded two additional shots and controlled the midfield, preventing the Moccasins from attacking.

Guild and Saenz led the Tars with five goals each on the season with Guild tallying three assists to Saenz's two. Tradd ended the year as the Tars top assist getter, totaling seven on the year.

This game was the last for the four seniors, Chamberlin, Guild, Jordan Ward (Birmingham, Ala.) and Alexis Sutton (Columbia, S.C.). The Tars will look to regroup for next season when they return to action in late August.

VOLLEYBALL KNOCKS OFF 10 TH RANKED SOUTHERN; GOES 3-1 ON THE WEEK

Last week:

Rollins 3, Florida Tech 1 (29-30, 30-26, 30-23, 30-28)

Rollins 3, Florida Southern 0 (30-27,30-27,33-31)

West Florida 3, Rollins 2 (30-27, 17-30, 30-23, 25-30, and 12-15)

Rollins 3, Flagler 1 (30-25, 30-22, 28-30, and 30-16)

Record: 21-9, 5-5 SSC

The Rollins volleyball team enjoyed one of their most successful weeks of the season, going 3-1 in four very tough matches, including a colossal 3-0 victory over 10 th ranked Florida Tech. Rollins improved their record to 21-9 on the year while drawing even in the SSC at 5-5.

In Tuesday's match against Florida Tech, the Panthers came out of the gate on a mission and took the first game, but the Tars settled down and took care of business en route to the crucial 3-1 conference win.

The Panthers came out strong in the first game building up an early 14-11 lead. The Tars would keep it close and were able to tie it up at 29. But a block by Jenny Hart and Jenny McCoy put the game out of reach, and the Panthers took the first one 31-29. The Tars would not drop another game. They came storming back in the second game leading by as much as 10 at 21-11. They would finish off Tech to the tune of 30-26. The third game was close early with the two teams trading points. The score was tied at 13, when the Tars went on a seven to one run to put the game out of reach. They would win the third game 30-23. And in the fourth and final game the Tars were trailing big early. The Panthers built up a 21-14 lead before the Tars could put anything together. However, after a timeout by Coach Sindee Snow, Rollins regrouped and went on a 12-5 run to tie it at 26. The Tars closed out on Tech from there and took the game 30-28.

The Tars were held to a .146 hitting percentage, but their defense was good enough to hold the Panthers to a similar figure, .152. Rollins suffered through 38 hitting errors but they picked up on the defensive end as four players were in double figures in digs.

Junior hitter Julia Caner and sophomore hitter Amy Barlow both led the team in kills with 16. Sophomore middle blocker Christina Reinders finished with 15 kills and hit for a .290 percentage. Sophomore Lorena Orlandini also finished with double digit kills with 13. Both Julia Caner and libero Kim Cline finished with over 20 digs. Cline finished with 20 and Caner finished with a season high 21.

Thursday Rollins headed to Lakeland for a clash with rival and Coach Sindee Snow's alma mater, Florida Southern, who entered the match ranked 10th in the nation and riding a 15 match winning streak. The Moccasins came into the match 67-4 against the Tars all-time and had won 19 of the last 20 meetings between the two teams. The last time they hooked up, Rollins was beaten at home in three games. But Thursday night was a completely different story. Rollins responded to a raucous and rowdy Southern crowd to get a huge 3-0 conference victory.

The first game was a hard fought, back and forth battle. The two teams were tied late at 24-24, when the Tars made their move. Rollins took their biggest lead of the game at 28-25, and were able to hold off a late game flurry by the Mocs. The Tars would take the game 30-27. Rollins carried over their momentum from game one and worked their way into a big lead to start off the second. The Tars led 17-9 before the slumbering Moccasins could respond. Southern was able to fight back and tie the game twice at 21 and 26. But with the crowd shouting itself into a frenzy, the Tars took control. Rollins finished the game on a 4-1 run and took the game 30-27. The Tars kept rolling in the third game, taking an 18-12 lead to begin the game. Florida Southern would respond in a big way to tie the game at 22. From there the game would go back and forth continuously until the end, both teams trading points on the serve. But in the end it was a kill by Lorena Orlandini that would end the game and the match. Rollins took the third and final game in dramatic fashion 33-31. The Tars chose the perfect time to elevate their game and play their most complete match of the season. Rollins was active at the net, tough on defense, and hit the ball strongly. They out-hit the Mocs, .176 to .123, and doubled up Southern's block total, 10-5. Rollins had two players with double digit kill tallies. Junior outside hitter Julia Caner led the Tars with 14 kills on 51 total attacks. She also added 11 digs to the defensive cause. Sophomore right side hitter Lorena Orlandini was the most accurate hitter for Rollins. She finished with 11 kills and hit for a .360 percentage while blocking three balls. Sophomore libero Kim Cline led the defense with 17 digs.

Saturday was a busy day for the Tars as they hosted a pair of non-conference opponents in Winter Park. Rollins opened with West Florida and were turned back in five games before downing Flagler 3-1 in the evening session.

In the first match of the day, the Tars started off tough against West Florida. Rollins took a 21-18 lead, on the way to a 30-27 win in the first frame. But the Tars had a let down in the second game, and allowed the Argonauts to get out to a big 17-11 lead. West Florida would pile on some more and would win by a score of 30-17. Rollins regained their edge in the third game. They led 25-21 late and would go on to take the game 30-23. West Florida stormed back in the fourth game. The two teams were deadlocked at 21 when the Argonauts took control. West Florida went on a 9-4 run to take the game 30-25. The Argonauts would carry the momentum from their game four win over to the fifth frame. West Florida led 10-3 and had Rollins reeling. The Tars would cut it down to as little as two, but would end up falling short. West Florida would take the game 15-12.

The loss dropped the Tars to 4-2 in five game matches. Rollins hurt itself with nine receiving errors on defense and 36 hitting errors which equated to a low .142 hitting percentage. Rollins did excel in other areas. The Tars' defense had more digs than the Argonauts 82-78, and they also had more blocks, 11 and a half to seven.

The Tars had three players with double digit kills. Junior outside hitter Julia Caner led all scorers with 21 kills, and also added 10 digs. Sophomore hitter Amy Barlow added 14 kills to the effort. And senior middle blocker Allison North finished with 13 kills and eight blocks. Freshman setter Lacey Malarky had a good day setting up her teammates. Malarky finished with 56 assists and also added a career high 17 digs. Sophomore libero Kim Cline tied a career high with 23 digs.

The Tars were dominant in the second match throughout. Facing an NAIA school, Coach Snow elected to start some of her reserves and rest some of her starters. Coach Snow's subs didn't let her down. The Tars took it to the Saints in the first game, hitting for 21 kills and a blistering .341 hitting percentage. They would take the game 30-25. The second game was more of the same. The Tars weren't as accurate as they hit for only a .070 percentage. However, Rollins was still able to trample the Saints 30-22. In the third game, the Tars took a minor step back as they dropped the game 30-28. But in the fourth, the Tars thumped the Saints 30-16, and took the match in four.

Rollins finished with a season high 20 serving aces. They added 65 kills and a .207 hitting percentage as a team. The Tars defense was out dug by the Saints 57-48, yet Rollins was able to hold the Saints to a lower hitting percentage, .146.

The Tars were led offensively by senior outside hitter Whitney Jones. Jones hit for a career high 16 kills, which led all scorers. Sophomore hitter Erin Kirkwood got a lot of playing time and took advantage. Kirkwood finished with a career high 12 kills and a .259 hitting percentage. Sophomore Christina Reinders added 11 kills and senior Allison North added 14 kills. Freshman setter Lacey Malarky put up her second straight double-double of the day with 54 assists and 11 digs.

The Tars will be back in action next Friday November 4, as they will return to Sunshine State Conference play against Eckerd in Winter Park. Last time out, Eckerd defeated the Tars in St. Petersburg three games to one. The following day, the Tars will try to avenge another road conference loss, as they will battle Saint Leo. The Tars dropped their road match against Saint Leo earlier this season in a five game thriller.

SWIM TEAMS KICK OFF SEASON WITH BUSY WEEKEND; SPLIT PAIR OF DUAL MEETS

Last Week:

Men:

Savannah College of A&D 135, Rollins 70

Rollins 164, Saint Leo 21

Women:

Savannah College of A&D 147, Rollins 58

Rollins 145, Saint Leo 45

Both the Rollins men's and women's swim teams opened their 2005-06 seasons last weekend and both split a pair of dual meets, falling to Savannah College of Art and Design before defeating Saint Leo.

SCAD brought a very deep team to Winter Park and rolled past the Tars, winning 147 to 58 in the women's competition and 135-70 in the men's division.

Bill Burris led the men's team with a victory in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay while Jessica Rothbiend scored a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke for the Rollins women. Burris cruised in the 50, stopping the clock at 22.05 to out reach a pair of SCAD swimmers. The senior then swam the anchor leg of the Tars winning 200 yard freestyle relay team as he joined Carson Nicely, Trevor Hughes and Jonathan Mastin to post a winning time of 1:30.71 in the exciting meet finale.  Hughes and Chris Sparks each tallied a second place for the Tars with Hughes posting a time of 53.24 in the 100 yard butterfly and Sparks going 2:06.12 in the 200 yard IM, just .03 seconds out of first. Jeff Mueller paced the Tars distance crew, recording a second place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:22.36 while Daniell Paulling scored a runner-up finish in the 500 with a time of 5:14.40. Freshman Jessica Rothbiend began her career at Rollins with a splash, scoring the Tars women's lone victory with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke.
