VOLLEYBALL HEADED TO NCAA TOURNEY FOR SECOND TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY

Last week:

Rollins 3, Saint Leo 1 (30-21,27-30,31-29,30-23)

Tampa 3, Rollins 0 (30-21,30-18,30-20)

Rollins 3, Nova Southeastern 0 (30-22,30-21,30-24)

Rollins 3, Lynn 2 (22-30,30-23,25-30,30-23,15-10)

Final regular season record: 25-10; 9-6 SSC (4 th place)

A whirlwind end of the season that included four tough SSC matches in six days was capped off early Monday morning when it was announced that the Rollins volleyball team earned a bid into the 2005 NCAA Division II South Region Championship. The only other time Rollins played in the postseason was in 1995. The Tars, who come in as the fifth seed, will match up with defending national champion and SSC foe Barry on Thursday, November 17 at 5 p.m. Top seeded Tampa will host the tournament. Joining the Tars, Buccaneers and Spartans in this year's field are Florida Southern, Florida Gulf Coast, Presbyterian, Wingate, and Francis Marion.

Rollins holds a record of 1-1 in their NCAA Tournament history with their only other trip coming in 1995. The Tars defeated North Florida 15-11, 13-15, 15-12, 13-15, 15-12 in the opening round before falling to eventual national champion Barry 15-0, 15-6, 15-12 in round two.

Due to hurricane Wilma, Rollins had to pack four matches into the final week of their schedule as the Tars went 3-1 during the stretch, completing season sweeps over Lynn and Nova Southeastern. The week began last Tuesday as Rollins hosted Saint Leo and avenged an earlier loss, taking the match 3-1. The Tars got it started with another good effort in the first game. Rollins built up an 18-10 lead on the Lions before they had a chance to react. The Tars would pour it on from there and take the first game 30-21. Saint Leo couldn't mount much of an offensive attack against the tough Tars defense. Rollins held the Lions to a .086 hitting percentage. In the second game the Lions came roaring back. The Tars struggled out of the gate allowing Saint Leo to gain a 7-3 early lead. The Lions would push their lead up to as much as four at 26-22. Rollins responded and tied the game at 27, but couldn't finish them off. The Tars would drop the game 30-27. In the third game neither Rollins nor Saint Leo could put a run together. The two teams traded kills back and forth until the final two points. With the game on the line, Christina Reinders slapped a kill past a defender and won the game for the Tars 31-29. In the fourth and final game, the Tars would have a much easier time. Rollins pushed out to a 20-12 lead early on, and would never look back. The Tars would take the game 30-23. A season high five Tars reached double digit kills. Junior outside hitter Julia Caner led the Tars with 18 kills on 50 attacks and added 14 digs to the defensive cause. Sophomore Lorena Orlandini finished with 16 kills, and sophomore Christina Reinders finished with 12 kills and a stellar .409 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Amy Barlow finished with a double-double totaling 11 kills and 12 digs. And Senior Allison North finished with 12 kills and 7 blocks. Freshman setter Lacy Malarky became the single season assists record holder with her impressive performance. She finished with 55 assists and now has 1,476 assists on the season with three matches to go. Sophomore libero Kim Cline finished with 21 digs on the night.

The very next day Rollins hosted third ranked Tampa and fell to the Spartans 3-0. The Tars took their best shot at Tampa in the first game. Rollins got off to a nice start and pushed out to a 15-11 lead. But Tampa responded right away and their heavy hitters got started on the front line. The Spartans would tie the game at 16 and then hit cruise control the rest of the way. Tampa would take the game 30-21. The Tars struggled out of the gates in game two, falling behind 10-2 to start off. Rollins would never recover and would drop the second game 30-18. The third game was more of the same. Tampa got off to a 20-9 start, but had little trouble putting the Tars away. Rollins would chip away at the lead but still fell short. Tampa would take the game 30-19. Tampa was able to hold the Rollins hitters in check throughout the night. Rollins could only manage a .058 hitting percentage against the Spartans. The Spartans on the other hand dominated the net, crushing 56 kills to Rollins' 29. Tampa also out-dug the Tars defense 63-50, and kept the Tars off-balanced with eight service aces compared to Rollins' one. Junior outside hitter Julia Caner had eight kills on 42 attacks and also added six digs. Freshman setter Lacy Malarky had 21 assists and 12 digs. And sophomore libero Kim Cline added 12 digs to the defense.

The weekend brought a trip to South Florida and match-ups against Nova Southeastern and Lynn. The Rollins volleyball team came to Ft. Lauderdale on a mission: to stay over .500 and solidify its position in the South Regional playoffs. The Tars (24-10, 8-6) completed their first test of the weekend with a three games to zero win over the Nova Southeastern Sharks (5-19, 1-13) 30-22, 30-21, and 30-24. In the first game the Tars came out with solid intensity and pushed the Sharks right out of the gate. Nova hung around early but the Tars pulled away once they hit the 20 point mark. Rollins built a 20-16 lead and would go on to win the first 30-22. The Tars were able to force the Sharks into seven hitting errors and held Nova to a .118 hitting percentage. The Tars dominated the start of game two, with the front line trio of Allison North, Christina Reinders and Lorena Orlandini leading the way. Rollins grabbed a 20-11 lead to begin the game. Nova was able to fight back and make the score respectable, but the difference was insurmountable. Rollins would take the game 30-21. The Tars hit a sizzling .326 in the game and held themselves to only four hitting errors. The third game started off as a back and forth battle. After several early ties, the Tars broke out to a 20-13 lead. Rollins wouldn't look back from there. The Tars held the Sharks to a game low .022 hitting percentage and forced a game high ten errors. Rollins would take the game 30-24. Rollins had two players with double digit kill tallies. Sophomore Lorena Orlandini finished with 14 kills and hit a red hot .444 percentage. Junior Julia Caner had 15 kills on 42 attacks and also added 12 digs for a double-double. Freshman setter Lacey Malarky also had a double-double with 40 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore libero Kim Cline led both teams with 19 digs. And senior Lindsey Crosby and sophomore Amy Barlow also added double digit digs with 10 and 14 respectively.

The regular season came to a close on Sunday as the Tars battled with Lynn and came out on top in five games. The Knights charged out with a vengeance in the first game. Lynn built up a 17-8 lead leaving the Tars a little shell shocked. The Tars would try to recover late. Julia Caner had a streak of four straight kills that brought the game back within five at 27-22. But the Tars would get no closer. Senior Theresa Daniels put her seventh and final kill of the game away for Lynn and they took the game 30-22. In the second game it was Rollins that came out on fire. The Tars built up a quick 8-1 lead that sent Lynn reeling. The Tars would push the lead out to as much as ten before Lynn was able to respond. The Knights climbed back to within four at 26-22 but the Tars wouldn't allow them to get any closer. Sophomore Lorena Orlandini finished the game off for the Tars with a powerful kill, and Rollins prevailed 30-23. Rollins was able to hold the Knights to a .184 hitting percentage in the second game while the Tars picked it up and hit for a red hot .350 percentage. The third game was close throughout with only a point or two separating the teams throughout. With the game tied at 16, Lynn gained some momentum. The Knights went on a 10-5 run to push the lead to 26-21 and they looked to put the Tars away. Rollins wouldn't get any closer than four the rest of the way, and the Knights would take the game 30-25. The Tars took control of game four early on, but Lynn was never far behind. Rollins pushed out to a 11-6 lead to start out only to see Lynn bring it back to within two at 15-13. Rollins gained a bit more of a cushion as the game progressed leading 25-19 late. Then sophomore Amy Barlow sent the match to a fifth game with her clutch kill that gave the game to the Tars 30-23. Rollins played excellent defense in the fourth game as the Tars held the Knights to a low .073 hitting percentage. In the deciding fifth game the Tars got off to a great start. Rollins took an 8-5 lead and continued to find holes and put pressure on the Knights' defense. The Knights would not get any closer than three. And thanks to a Christina Reinders block, the Tars were able to pull out a 15-10 victory in the fifth game. The Tars played a complete match with every member of the team contributing. Five players had double digit kill tallies and four players had double digit digs. Sophomore Lorena Orlandini and junior Julia Caner each led the Tars with 17 kills apiece. Caner also added a season high 24 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Amy Barlow had a double double as well with 14 kills and 18 digs. Freshman setter Lacey Malarky had a record setting afternoon as she finished with a new Tars record 70 assists. Senior Lindsey Crosby had a season high 17 digs. And sophomore libero Kim Cline fell just one dig short of her career high when she finished with 24 digs. The Tars as a whole set a team record with 103 digs.

MEN'S BASKETBALL GETS HUGE EXHIBITION WIN OVER STETSON; READY FOR UCF

Last week:

Rollins 70, Stetson 67 (exhibition)

The Tars gathered a huge head of steam heading into the regular season after an exhibition road win over Stetson on Friday night. Rollins' Kevin Hogan drained a three pointer with 90 seconds left to break a 67-67 tie and Stetson missed on five final minute attempts to seal up the Tars win. John Thinnes paced Rollins with 19 points on 7-11 shooting, including 5-8 from beyond the arc. Hogan finished with 12 points with Jordan Kolosey and Jonny Reibel each netting 10.

The game was a true battle from the opening tip as neither team held a lead of more than five points the entire first stanza. After falling behind by five at 25-20 with five minutes to go, Rollins went on a 10-5 run to head into the locker room with a 35-30 advantage. The second half again was back and forth with the Hatters grabbing a four point advantage, 65-61, with 4:11 to go. Hogan nailed a trey to cut it to one, but SU came back with a lay-up and took a three-point edge. Reibel then stepped back and drained a three pointer of his own to knot the score a 67-67 with 2:37 on the clock. Rollins forced a turnover on the ensuing Hatters possession to set up Hogan's second three pointer and eventual game winner as a barrage of threes from Stetson down the stretch couldn't find the net and Rollins walked away with the win. Stetson ended the game with a pair of 20-point scorers with Anthony Register pouring in 24 and E.J. Gordon racking up 23. The Tars shot a blistering 51.9 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game hitting 43.9 percent.

The Rollins men's basketball team opens their season on Tuesday, November 15 hosting Southeastern College at 7:30 p.m. before traveling to UCF for an 8 p.m. clash on Friday, November 18. The Tars last matched up against their cross-town rival on November 13, 1998 with the Golden Knights winning a slugfest, 104-98. UCF holds a 24-15 record in the all-time series and is 14-4 when the Tars visit the east side of town.
