MEN'S BASKETBALL BACK ON TRACK WITH PAIR OF DECISIVE WINS

Last week:

Rollins 73, Florida Memorial 64

Rollins 83, Florida Tech 55

Season Record: 3-2, 1-0 SSC

After dropping two straight heartbreakers, the Rollins men's basketball team got back on track in a big way, drubbing Florida Memorial at home on Wednesday, then blowing out Florida Tech on the road to open up conference play Saturday.

Deon Troupe (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Jonny Reibel (Chicago, Ill.) are quickly establishing themselves as a marquee guard duo as each put up big numbers last week. Troupe averaged 16 points per game while shooting 7-11 (.638) from long range with Reibel averaging 11 points and posting his first career triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Florida Tech.

The Tars bounced back from two straight losses by downing Florida Memorial in Winter Park by a score of 73-64 last Wednesday.

The Tars matched a season high as four players reached double figure point totals. Junior guard, Deon Troupe led all scorers with 17. Troupe scorched the nets on 4-6 shooting and 4-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Junior forward John Thinnes (Cincinnati, Ohio) also stroked the ball nicely as he added 14 points on 4-6 shooting from three point land. Junior forward, Jon Smith added 11 down low for the Tars and nabbed three steals on the defensive end. Sophomore Chauncey Gibbs (Cincinnati, Ohio) had another stellar night as he gave the Tars 10 points off the bench on 5-6 shooting and also grabbed five rebounds.

The Tars started the game off quickly by grabbing an 18-10 lead with 12:23 to go in the first half. The Lions of Florida Memorial would keep the game close through most of the first half, cutting the lead to as little as two, at 18-16. But the Tars kept pushing the Lions and after a Thinnes trey with 3:26 to go, the Tars grabbed their biggest lead of the game at 32-22. They would keep the pressure up the rest of the half and go into the break with a 37-28 lead. Things stayed stagnant for the first part of the second. However, the Tars were able to extend their lead back into double digits when Jon Smith hit a three-pointer to make the score 46-35 with 15:01 to go. The Tars would push the lead up to as much as 19 in the second and cruise to a 73-64 victory despite a late desperate surge by the Lions.

Rollins then came right back on Saturday and opened up the Sunshine State Conference season with a decisive road victory over Florida Tech, 83-55. Reibel was Mr. Everything as he posted his first career triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Junior Deon Troupe had another big night for the Tars as well. Troupe was one of three Tars that finished with 15 points, as he shot five of ten from the floor and three of six from beyond the arc. Junior forward Isaac Codrey (Winter Park, Fla.) added 15 points on six of eight shooting. Codrey came off the bench in only his second game back, returning from an injury that kept him out of the Tars first three contests. Sophomore forward, Chauncey Gibbs, did a terrific job on the glass as he finished with eight boards, five coming on the offensive side.

Florida Tech started off on fire from beyond the arc at the beginning of the first half. Panther guards E.J. Murray and Brad Rich hit three straight long range shots for the Panthers to give them an early 9-5 lead. But the Tars were able to match the Panthers offensive onslaught. Rollins went on a 19-8 run capped off by a Nate Rusbosin lay-in to give themselves a 24-17 lead with just over seven minutes to play. Then at the end of the half, Kevin Hogan took a pass from Jonny Reibel and buried a clutch three pointer with just under a minute to play to put the Tars up 43-28. The Tars went into the locker room at the half with a 15 point lead.

Rollins came out and buried the Panthers in the first part of the second half. The Tars used a 23 to nine run in the first 11 minutes of the second half to create some distance between themselves and Tech. The Rollins defense absolutely shut down the Panthers for much of the second stanza. The Tars held Tech scoreless for over eight minutes down the stretch in the second half. Rollins would lead by as much as 30 in the half and cruise to a 28 point victory.

The Tars shot 50 percent overall from the floor for the second straight game. Rollins dominated the Panthers in the paint 36-14, and the Tars bench exploded for 39 points to the Panthers' seven. Rollins also capitalized on the Panthers mistakes as the Tars scored 20 points off of Tech's 20 turnovers.

On the season, Reibel is averaging 13.6 points 7.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game while seeing over 33 minutes of action per contest. Troupe is pouring in 12.8 per game with Thinnes averaging 10.4. Gibbs is the Tars window man this season as he is gathering 5.2 boards per game.

Rollins will be back in action again on December 13 when they will host Webber International. That game will start at 7:00 pm in Warden Arena. From there the Tars will head to Las Vegas for the High Desert Classic where they will square off against Central Arkansas on December 17 and Central Missouri State on December 18. Both games will begin at 12 pm Pacific time and 3 pm eastern time. Both games will also be broadcast on WPRK and over the internet on the WPRK website ( www.wprkdj.org )

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CONTINUES TO STEAMROLL THROUGH SCHEDULE

Last week:

Rollins 67, Flagler 33

Rollins 74, Florida Tech 54

Season Record: 8-0, 1-0 SSC

The juggernaut that is the Rollins women's basketball team continued to steamroll through their 2005-06 schedule with Flagler and Florida Tech being the latest victims. Any way you slice it, the Tars have been nothing short of amazing through the first stretch of the season as they have been spectacular in every aspect of the game from guard and post play to the solid contributions off of the bench.

The Rollins College women's basketball team kept their winning streak alive on Wednesday night by defeating the Saints of Flagler College by a score of 67-33. Senior Joslyn Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) led the Tars with 17 points while sophomore Rachael Workman (Northampton, Mass.) recorded a career high 13 points.

The Tars opened the game on a roll and knocked down five early baskets to take an 11-0 lead. The Tars defense stood tall all night and held the Saints to under 10 points until 3:31 was remaining on the clock in the first half. The Saints kept fighting and scored four baskets in the last 3:31 to cut the Tars lead to 30-17 at the break. In the first half alone, the Tars forced the Saints into 18 turnovers and held them to 27 percent from the field (7-26).   When play resumed in the second half, the Saints scored five early points to cut the Tars advantage to eight. However, the Tars' speed and depth caught up to the Saints and Rollins would go on a 29-6 run over the next 11 minutes, led by Workman with nine points.   On the evening, the Tars out-rebounded the Saints 49-41 and had 22 steals to the Saints 33 turnovers. Sophomore Jennifer Musgrove (Palm Bay, Fla.) tied her career high and led the Tars with six steals while senior Sally Johnston (Winter Springs, Fla.) also tied her career high with five assists in the game.

Next up was a trip to Melbourne and Florida Tech to open up the 2005-06 Sunshine State Conference season. A swarming defense and solid play from the bench earned Tars a 74-54 victory and moved their record to 8-0.

Senior Joslyn Giles ( Winter Haven , Fla. ) had a career game, tying her all-time best with 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Tars. Underclassmen Jessica Barker ( Orange City , Fla. ) and Rachael Workman ( Northampton , Mass. ) netted 10 points apiece off the bench with Larissa McDonough ( Ormond Beach , Fla. ) adding seven points and seven boards.

Florida Tech (6-2, 0-1) took a 3-2 lead two minutes into the game, but that would be their only advantage of the night as Giles scored on the Tars next trip down the floor to put the visitors up for good. The Tars lead grew to double digits at the 10 minute mark as Randi Weiss ( Kissimmee , Fla. ) connected on a jumper to make the score 18-7. Rollins kept pounding the ball down low and running fresh bodies into the action to grab a 37-25 lead heading into the locker room.

Giles netted 12 in the period, which included a 6-10 mark from the free throw line. The Tars shot 50 percent (15-30) from the floor while holding the Panthers to just 38 percent (10-26) and generating 15 Tech turnovers.

Rollins couldn't shake Florida Tech for the first 10 minutes of the second half as the Panthers held the Tars to a 10 point lead early in the period. Coach Glenn Wilkes, Jr. kept the full court press on and wore down the Tech guards as Rollins began to pull away. Weiss nailed a three pointer with 9:50 to go to put the visitors up 53-36 and seal the deal as Rollins used their depth to cruise to the 20 point win.

Giles paces the Tars on the season as she is putting up 18.0 points and pulling down 7.1 boards per game. McDonough averages 13.6 and 6.9 on the year with Workman and Weiss adding 8.9 and 8.5 points per game, respectively.

After a whirlwind first month of the season, the Tars will take it easy in December as they have just one more game before the New Year. Rollins will travel to Milledgeville , Georgia for a match-up with Georgia College on Monday, December 12 at 4 p.m.

SWIM TEAMS BACK IN ACTION AT EMORY

This week: vs. Emory University at Atlanta

After a short break, the Rollins men's and women's swim teams will be back in the pool this weekend against NCAA Division III national powerhouse Emory University. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta.

Men:

The 17 th national ranked Rollins men are 2-2 through the first month of the season with wins over Saint Leo and Florida Southern. They will have their work cut out for them against the 2-1 Eagles who have finished no worse than third in the nation the past five years. The Tars times have been steadily coming down through the year with many flirting with NCAA B cuts. Senior sprinter Bill Burris (Moorestown, N.J.) is 3-1 in the 50 yard freestyle with his only blemish being a second place finish by .03 seconds against Tampa. His season best of 22.03 is just off the NCAA standard of 21.51 with his PR, set last year, being 21.50. Freshman Carson Nicely (Knoxville, Tenn.) has already posted a time of 49.80 in the 100 yard freestyle with the NCAA cut at 47.06.

The Tars swimmer most primed to hit the B cut is junior butterflier Trevor Hughes (Long Beach, N.Y.). He had a season best time of 54.46 in the 100 butterfly against Tampa and could reach the mark of 51.80 at Emory this weekend. Last season he was just 0.3 seconds off of the A cut with a personal best of 50.66.

Women:

The Rollins women are ranked 15 th in the latest NCAA Division II poll and are 1-3 going into the huge match-up at Emory. The Eagles are coming in as the defending NCAA Division III national champions and have finished no worse than fourth since 2001. A butterflier and a breaststroker have their sights set on NCAA B cuts for Rollins this weekend. School record holder Corie Kelly (Longwood, Fla.) has gone 1:02.83 in the 100 yard butterfly this season and will need a time of 59.01 or better to hit the NCAA standard. The sophomore put up a personal best of 59.05 last season in the event. Freshman Jessica Rothbiend (Pinehurst, N.C.) is undefeated in the 100 yard breaststroke this season with a personal best of 1:09.58 against Tampa. She will have her sights set on the NCAA B cut of 107.76.

After the trip to Atlanta, the Tars will enjoy the holiday break before heading to the Daytona Invitational on Wednesday, January 4.
