Policies and Procedures for Students

POLICIES:

All required registration forms for the academic internship course should be submitted to the Office of Career Services prior to the internship registration deadlines posted for each semester on the Dates to Remember page of the Career Services web site. After the paperwork is submitted, Career Services will submit all registration forms to the Office of Student Records on the student's behalf.

Students are eligible to participate in an academic internship course for interdisciplinary credit if the following criteria are met:

o        Have earned at least 30 semester hours

o        Will not be on academic probation the semester they will be interning

o        Will not be on judicial probation the semester they will be interning or have been previously dismissed from the residence halls

o        Have not earned more than 12 hours of internship credit, including internships offered through the Office of International Programs, while at Rollins

To receive interdisciplinary credit for an internship, students should take a Credit Approval Form to their faculty advisor to secure his/her signature indicating that they are aware their advisee will be completing an internship for academic credit. Students are responsible for bringing the signed form back to Career Services by the internship registration deadline. Forms left with an advisor will not be processed and students will not be registered for their internship.

Text Box: Revised 1/2005

Each credit hour requires a minimum of 40 hours of work at the internship site within the dates of the semester. Students may register to earn 2, 3 or 4 semester hours of credit for an internship, which will require at least 80, 120 or 160 work hours respectively at the internship site. Academic credit cannot be granted retroactively for an internship that has already been started or completed.

To receive major or minor credit for an internship, the Credit Approval Form should be signed by both the student’s Faculty Advisor and the Department Chair/Internship Representative of the department granting credit and then returned to Career Services by the registration deadline. Students earning credit in the major typically have to register for 4 semester hours. Students should check with their faculty advisors to make sure they have satisfied all department prerequisites to participate in an internship for major or minor credit. An internship that is declined for major or minor credit may still be approved for interdisciplinary credit that counts towards students’ general elective requirements.

If students choose to participate in an internship that has not been pre-approved by the Office of Career Services to receive interdisciplinary academic credit, the sponsoring internship site is required to submit an Internship Site Information Form available through the Career Services website. The internship position must be in accordance with the Rollins Internship Criteria as listed on the Career Services web site in order to be approved. This form must be received and approved by the Office of Career Services prior to the published internship registration deadline for each semester.

Students must attend one of the Mandatory Internship Orientation Sessions offered at the beginning of each semester. The dates for the internship orientations are posted on the Dates to Remember page of the Career Services web site. If students have class schedule conflicts with both of the internship orientations, they are responsible for contacting their internship professor to make alternate arrangements before the first scheduled orientation.

Fall and spring internships must be completed within the dates of the semester as listed on the Arts & Sciences academic calendar.

Summer internships must be completed within a 9-week semester (dates to be determined by internship professor). There is a $250 fee to receive academic credit for an internship during the summer term only. This fee will automatically be billed to the student’s account upon registration.

Students may enroll in one (1) internship per semester and a maximum of four (4) semester hours of credit may be earned for any internship in a single semester. A student who completes the same internship multiple terms may only receive academic credit for that internship during one (1) term.

Academic internships may only be taken as credit/no credit. Letter grades are not assigned to academic internships and therefore are not calculated into a student’s GPA.
