Career Advising and Exploration
The Office of Career Services offers multiple services and programs designed to help students make educated, well-informed decisions about career choice.  We do this by providing workshops, written materials, career inventories and individual career counseling. Although students and alumni at all stages find help through these career exploration tools, the best time to start is during the freshman year.  To learn more about some of these programs and services, click on any of the links below.

Self assessment and Career Inventories
Choices Planner - Choices Planner is a computerized career guidance system that integrates self-assessment with in-depth and up-to-date career information that helps you match your interests, values, and skills to careers. It also provides current information on specific careers that you would like to explore, including required education and skills, as well as salary and job outlook information.
Major selection - Choosing a major as an undergraduate can be a complicated process, especially if a student is unclear of what type of career they will pursue after college.  We have found that the relationship between majors and careers is not always a significant one.  Printed "What can I do with a major in..." guides are available to view and download from our website.

Internship Education
Employers tell us time and time again that the most sought after candidates are those who have meaningful and relevant work experience.  The best way to gain such experience while in college is often by completing internships, either for career exploration purposes or to gain in-depth experience within a chosen career field.

How to Help Your Student in Career Planning
When we counsel students on career planning, students often discuss how their parents impact their career planning.  What help do students want or need from their parents?

Support: College students go through cycles of independence and dependence.  Discuss career options, but realize your son or daughter should make the ultimate decision about his or her career goals.
Encourage Exploration: Some students fear choosing a major because they feel it will lock them into a certain career direction and limit their options.  Parents can discuss how following natural interests and skills when choosing a major, along with career planning, actually offers students more career options.
Personal Insight: Parents have the greatest influence on students’ career planning because they often know more about their child’s values, interests, abilities and skills than anyone else.  Parents should make a commitment to periodically discuss career planning with their son or daughter.
Motivation: There is nothing wrong with a student being unsure about career direction.  The problem is often simple procrastination.  Parents should show an interest in becoming involved in their child’s career planning.
