Guest Editors

Luk N. Van Wassenhove, INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France
luk.van-wassenhove@insead.edu
Consideration of ethical values puts Operational Research/Management Science (OR/MS) in the broader context of sustainable development, including concern for the natural environment, societal and human evolution, business ethics and corporate responsibility.
Although ethics can hardly be dissociated from the theoretical, practical and institutional dimensions of the management sciences, there remains ambiguity and skepticism as to the form this relation might and should take. This results in a lack of representation of ethics within mainstream management sciences. A critical assessment of OR/MS, with clearly articulated ethical values, as well as constructive proposals for improvement, should contribute to the promotion of ethics within mainstream management sciences.
We call for state-of-the-art papers covering the relation between ethical values and OR/MS at the theoretical, practical and institutional levels. Submitted papers should favor the integration of ethical values within OR/MS where OR/MS is broadly defined as an analytical approach to help solve managerial decision problems.
Among the topics that would be welcomed are:
-
Ethical values and analytical models;
-
Ethical values and methodological issues in OR/MS;
-
Ethical values in the practice of decision-making and OR analysis;
-
Ethics in the OR/MS institutions.
Authors should submit their paper via EES
http://www.ees.elsevier.com/omega/ and indicate in the title "Special Issue: Ethics and Operational Research ”
Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere . Refereeing and the selection of papers will be carried out according to the standards of OMEGA. For details related to the page format for submission to OMEGA, please check the webpage : http://www.omegajournal.org/authors.html.
The submission deadline is September 30, 2007
The Special Issue is scheduled for publication in 2008.

Biographical Dictionary of New Chinese Entrepreneurs
and Business Leaders
Edited by Wenxian Zhang and Ilan Alon
Published by Edward Elgar
Over the past three decades, China's transition from a planned to a market economy has unleashed an extraordinary series of changes: private enterprises have sprouted, foreign investment has soared, the standard of living has improved, and corruption has increased. Another result of economic reform has been the creation of a new class - China's new business elite, including private property owners, former government officials, factory directors, village leaders, engineers and entrepreneurs. The proposed book is intended to highlight the background and contributions of these leaders.
Scheduled to be published by Edward Elgar in 2008-09, the Biographical Dictionary of New Chinese Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders will provide up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of major players of the Chinese economy since the reform era in 1978. Edited by Professors Wenxian Zhang and Ilan Alon of Rollins College, the emphasis of the reference book is on the movers and shakers of China's new economy, highlighting notable figures from both the initial economic liberalization period and the renewed growth from the early 1990s to the present time. The geographic focus of the book will be Mainland China, but ethnic Chinese from elsewhere (such as HK, Macau, Taiwan, etc.) are also eligible for coverage. While we provide a list of potential people to write about below, you may propose others whom you think are worthwhile subjects.
The biographical dictionary will contain 150-200 entries, each consisting of 300-1,000 words in length, on average, briefly summarizing the individual's life and careers, with a central focus on his or her accomplishments and the key roles played in the new Chinese economy. We expect each author to contribute five entries (for a total of about 2,500 words). Authors will be acknowledged in each entry they write and will be given a free copy of the dictionary upon publication.
The following deadlines apply:
September 15, 2007: Authors propose entries
September 30, 2007: Editors officially approve entries
October 15, 2007: Entries 1-2
November 30, 2007: Entries 3-5

Decentering Asia
The New York Conference on Asian Studies - Annual Meeting
Binghamton University
October 26-27, 2007
Decentering Asia," the New York Conference on Asian Studies
The annual meeting of the New York Conference on Asian Studies will be held at Binghamton University October 26-27, 2007. Hosting the conference, the Asian and Asian American Studies Program at Binghamton University invites proposals for papers, panels and roundtables to explore the theme of "Decentering Asia, along with any other notable aspects of East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Central Asian, West Asian, Asian American, and Asian diasporic studies.
What would Asian studies in the U.S. look like if its center shifted away from its dominant points of reference and reoriented in new directions? What significant insights could be gained by examining Asia's multitudinous histories, cultures, conflicts, and peoples through imaginative lenses located in other less-trafficked localities? The conference organizers intend multiple, if not fluid, readings of this theme, inclusive of, but not limited to:
- the study of Asia and Asian America decentered from what has traditionally been its predominant regional or ethnic foci and approaches;
- Asia itself decentered as the exclusive or primary locus of Asian studies and examined in relation to and along side studies of the rest of the world;
- the U.S. decentered as the principle locus of Asian American studies;
- Asia unbound by the conventional theoretical framework of civilizations, empires, and nation-states;
- Asia and Asian America viewed through interdisciplinary lenses and conceptualized at the intersection of multiple disciplinary practices.
Scholars based not only in New York, but also in other states and countries are welcome. The conference will feature:
- a keynote address by Professor Gary Okihiro of New York University, founding director of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race and professor of international and public affairs at Columbia University
- a presidential address by Professor Elizabeth Perry, Henry Rosovsky Professor of Government at Harvard University and incoming President of the Association for Asian Studies.

Corporate Strategies in the New Asia: Management in China, Japan and
South Korea between Competition and Co-operation
February 1-2, 2008 - Bremen, Germany
Following the first highly successful workshop in Leeds in January 2007,
we are pleased to announce the second international workshop dedicated
to Asian management issues which will be hold by the Department of
Japanese Economy and Society at the School of Business and Management,
Hochschule Bremen.
The workshop will focus on corporate strategies and managerial styles in
Chinese, Japanese and Korean companies. The workshop will address the
following questions in particular: What is the connection of Asias
economic success with corporate strategies? Can we see common pattern in
the managerial styles of Asian companies? What can Western companies
learn from Asian management approaches and what are suitable answers to
cope with Asian competitors?
Japanese management strategies have gained remarkable attention among
scholars and business practitioners in the 1980s. The burst of the
Bubble Economy in the early 1990s led to a decline in popularity of
Japan as a role model. Attention turned to China which experienced
tremendous economic growth in the last decade. In the meantime South
Koreas economy - which suffered a blowback after the Asian Crisis
1997/98 - prospered again with growth rates up to six per cent in recent
years. While China is on the way to become the new economic superpower,
recent figures underline the assumption that Japanese companies are back
on stage, too. Companies like Toyota are reporting top results while the
Japanese economy as a whole is on a steady growth path again. Given that
the regional economic integration in North East Asia will continue, it
seems fair to assume that a New Asia is emerging with major impact for
the world economy.
This observation suggests itself to ask for the underlying patterns of
success of this New Asia? Is there, and if so, what is the connection
between this economic success and corporate strategies? Is there a move
towards a unified (Anglo-American) strategy or do companies in the
region apply alternative managerial styles? If so, are these approaches
more consensual or is competition also the driving force in todays
Asian management?
Those are the major question this workshop will address. In the end we
also hope to find some answers to the question of what Western companies
