End-of-Semester Celebration & Members Interest Meeting
May 5, 2009
Join us in the Faculty Club from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. to celebrate the year. Interested members can learn more about Communiqué, the variety of leadership opportunities (see back) and meet Carolyn Planck, 2009-10 Communiqué Advisor. Communiqué Officer and leadership opportunities include:
President – Leader of the organization. Works closely with the advisor to research and implement organization goals. Creates agenda for monthly meetings, acts as facilitator during meetings and helps with recruitment. Attends FPRA functions as time permits.
Vice President – Assists and supports the president with all efforts. Handles communications between leadership positions and serves as membership contact liaison.
Secretary – Records minutes during all meetings and e-mails them to Web Site Chair for posting on the Web.
Community Service Chair – Manages the community service efforts of the organization. Serves as contact/liaison for nonprofit organizations, sets up speakers and coordinates job shadows for interested members.
Public Relations Chair – Manages the public relations efforts of the organization. Works with advisor and president on media story pitches and external public relations.
Web Site Chair – Regularly maintains and updates the Communiqué Web site. This includes posting monthly meeting minutes, stories, calendar information, etc.


Networking Roundtable & Professional Development Workshop
Saturday, April 18, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Galloway Room, Mills Memorial Hall
Dozens of students had the chance to hear from Central Florida professionals in a variety of industries and network with them during lunch. The 2009 Networking Roundtable & Professional Development Workshop wraped up with advice from Rollins Career Counselor Marian Cacciatore on “Navigating the Job Market in a Downturn Economy.”

Melanie Forbrick, Communications Director, Siemens Energy - Melanie oversees communications activities in the Americas, including strategic communications planning, events, tradeshows, global advertising, media relations, internal communications, marketing communications and visual graphic production. In 2006, Melanie was named by the Orlando Business Journal as one of Central Florida's "40 under 40" business leaders. She received a BA in journalism from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, in 1987.
Laura Guitar, Senior Vice President, Edelman Public Relations - A Rollins alumna from the Class of 1992, Laura Guitar leads the Orlando-based team of Edelman, the world's largest independent public relations firm. Laura has more than 13 years of experience and was most recently named an "Up and Comer" in the Orlando Sentinel's Power Ranking List. In 2006, she was recognized as a young leader in Central Florida with the Orlando Business Journal's "40 under 40" award and in 2007 was an Orlando Business Journal 'Women Who Mean Business' finalist.

student organization Communiqué, the student chapter of
the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) chose the Second Annual Rollins Dance Marathon to benefit the Children's Miracle Network as its fall community service project. Communiqué members assisted Rollins with publicity, promotion and fundraising for Dance Marathon. Communiqué assisted with the donation drive at The Winter Park Farmer's Market and the first-ever Stroll-A-Thon. |

Rollins College Communique Wins Public Relations Award for "Baking for Breat Cancer" Community Service Project.
Rollins
student organization Communiqué, the student chapter of
the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) won the
only award presented to students during the 2008 Image
Awards. The awards ceremony was held Thursday, April 20
at the CityArts Factory in downtown Orlando.
Rollins College Hamilton Holt School students Marja Kolomyski and Nicole Webb, and Rollins College Director of News & Media Relations Jeni Hatter won an Award of Distinction for "Baking for Breast Cancer."
The community service project, organized by Communique, included collecting money during bake sales. As a result, $1,000 was raised for breast cancer awareness and proceeds were donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. This is the second public award Communique has received in two years.
The Image Awards competition is conducted annually byt he Florida Public Relations Association to recognize outstanding public relations programs in Florida and to encourage abd promote development of public relations professionalism in our state.
The Image Awards have become a standard of public
relations excellence in the state of
Florida. Winners demonstrate the very best examples of innovation, planning and design. The
awards competition includes four divisions of categories: Public Relations Programs, Printed
Tools of Public Relations, Audio/Visual Tools of Public
Relations and Student Projects in Public Relations. To qualify for judging, an entry must
incorporate sound public relations
research and planning. Entries also must meet the
highest standard of production,
execution, and evaluation of results and budget.
Sweater Drive
Communique members helped with a
sweater drive in honor of Fred Rogers.
Collection boxes were located throughout the
Rollins campus and at the Winter Park Public
Library. This event concluded with
a visit to Rollins by a former associate
producer of Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Please visit

Ripple Effect
We worked with the Ripple Effect to help feed
the homeless. This organization was founded by
a Rollins alumni.
Hamilton Holt School’s MLS Program Celebrates
20th Anniversary
This
semester, the Hamilton Holt School’s Master of
Liberal Studies (MLS) program celebrated 20
years. In honor of that, New York Times
journalist and best-selling author Frank Rich
held a public talk at Rollins in the Alfond
Sports Center. Members assisted with
planning this event.
Other Event Support
Members
joined efforts with other volunteers at a variety
of Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA)
events, as well as Starry, Starry Night, a
Hamilton Holt School fundraiser. The FPRA
Roast & Toast was held Thursday, March 20
and the FPRA Image Awards were held

Adopt a Unit
We teamed up with the
Rollins men’s and women’s lacrosse teams in
this community service project to help them
collect items to send overseas to the troops.
Through their “Adopt-a-Unit” outreach
campaign, the inaugural men’s and women’s Tars
lacrosse teams mailed a total of 60 boxes
filled with supplies to our troops in
Afghanistan and Iraq.
Baking
for Breast Cancer
In honor of
October being National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, we raised money through bake sales for
the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Bake sales were
held in front of the Cornell Campus Center.
Money collected was donated to
the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Networking Roundtable
More than 50
students attended our signature event November
8, 2007 during which they had the opportunity to
network with local communications
professionals.
