Teach For America

Our mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting our nation's most promising future leaders in the effort. We recruit outstanding recent college graduates from all backgrounds and career interests to commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools. We provide the training and ongoing support necessary to ensure their success as teachers in low-income communities.

Our teachers, also called corps members, go above and beyond traditional expectations to lead their students to significant academic achievement, despite the challenges of poverty and the limited capacity of the school system. In succeeding with their students, corps members show that students in low-income communities can achieve at high levels, offering further evidence that educational inequity is a solvable problem.

Yet we know that enlisting additional high-quality teachers is not the ultimate solution. We believe that the best hope for ending educational inequity is to build a massive force of leaders in all fields who have the perspective and conviction that come from teaching successfully in low-income communities.

During their two-year commitments, Teach For America corps members see firsthand that educational inequity is solvable and gain a grounded understanding of how to solve it. Beyond these two years, Teach For America alumni bring strong leadership to all levels of the school system and every professional sector, addressing the extra challenges facing children growing up in low-income communities, building the capacity of schools and districts, and changing the prevailing ideology through their examples and advocacy.

Our first and second application deadlines are coming up on Wednesday, October 28 and students can apply on our website.

Camp Boggy Creek has had a FANTASTIC 2009 Camping season thus far!  But wait! We are not finished yet.Beginning September this year, through April of next year, there are 20 disease-specific family retreat weekends scheduled where up to 34 campers will bring their entire families along for a three-, four-, or five-day weekend retreat. These sessions allow the campers' siblings to join in on the fun, while providing the opportunity for parents to gather with other parents who are dealing with the serious situations of having a child with a chronic or life-threatening illness.

Our FALL 2009 season is right around the corner and we have spots open for you!  Volunteering at Camp Boggy Creek offers College Campus groups the opportunity to "team build" together or just give back to the community as a whole.  Individual students also find this a great opportunity.  If you are looking to not only have the time of your life, but you want to make a difference in the lives of some amazing kids and their families, then Boggy Creek is the place for you!

We need 60 to 65 energetic volunteers each weekend to help give our families the time of their life! Camp Boggy Creek would not exist without the dedication of our volunteers who donate thousands of hours each and every year. Each weekend these volunteers (male and female, ages 19 and older) act as a Family Pal, Activity Pal, Certified Lifeguard or Dining Hall assistant.  (Please visit our website for specific job descriptions.)

Eighth Annual Walk for Lakewood

October 10 at 8:00 am at Lake Lily Park in Maitland

Mental illness, more common than cancer, diabetes or heart disease, is the leading cause of disability in the United States. It affects more than 60 million Americans or nearly one in every five families. The stigma associated with the disease prevents many from seeking the help they desperately need.

Lakewood Center is the only non-government funded, not-for-profit, long-term residential treatment facility for individuals with chronic mental illness in Central Florida.  Please join the Lakewood Center for their Annual Walk event on Saturday, October 10th.

Consider forming a team of walkers for this short, enjoyable walk around Lake Lily in Maitland.  The Lakewood Center would be delighted to provide a tour of their treatment center for your group/organization to learn more about the cause.  Show the community that you care about individuals with chronic mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism and depression by getting involved in this walk.

To register as a team or an individual walker, please email your contact information to info@lakewoodcenter.org.
To learn more about this walk and the Lakewood Center contact
Michael D. Slaymaker at 407-331-7226 or at mslaymaker@laamistad.org.  You can also visit their website at www.laamistad.org.
