Crummer Graduate School Presents Faculty Awards at Commencement

Commencement ceremonies for the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College were held Saturday, April 30, 2005, on the Rollins campus. Darden Restaurants, Inc. Chief Executive Officer, Clarence Otis, delivered the commencement address to the School’s 178 graduates.

Crummer School Dean Craig McAllaster presented Crummer Professor of Marketing Greg W. Marshall with the Cornell Distinguished Faculty Award. The award recognizes outstanding teaching, research and service.

Marshall joined the Crummer School in January 2004 as professor of marketing. Previously, he served as associate professor of marketing and director of the Executive MBA Program at Oklahoma State University (OSU). Prior to joining OSU, he served on the faculties of the University of South Florida and Texas Christian University. His research focuses on sales force selection, performance and evaluation; sales force diversity; decision making by marketing managers; and intraorganizational relationships. He is editor of the Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management, is a member of the board of directors of the Direct Selling Education Foundation and is immediate past president of the academic division of the American Marketing Association. He is co-author (with Johnston) of a very successful textbook, Sales Force Management 8th ed. (McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2006) and Relationship Selling and Sales Management 1st ed. (McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2004). Marshall is also coauthor of the textbook Marketing: Real People, Real Choices 4th ed. (Prentice Hall, 2006). He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing management and an MBA degree with an emphasis on marketing and management from the University of Tulsa and a Ph.D. degree in business administration (marketing major, management minor) from Oklahoma State University.

Rollins College Provost Patricia Lancanster presented Alan and Sandra Gerry Professor of Marketing and Ethics Mark Johnston with the Cornell Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes faculty who have distinguished themselves through outstanding service. Johnston has taught marketing at the Crummer School since 1993. Previously, he served on the faculties at Louisiana State University and Texas A&M University. Johnston’s research focuses on the topics of marketing ethics, sales force performance and effectiveness, salesperson motivation, CEO priorities and employee turnover in business organizations. His research has resulted in published articles in a number of professional journals such as the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management, and many others. He is also co-author of Sales Force Management 8th ed. and Relationship Selling and Sales Management. Johnston has been ranked by the prestigious Journal of Business Research as one of the most influential market researchers of the past 15 years. He has been retained as a consultant by firms in the tourism, healthcare, transportation and telecommunications industries. Johnston earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business from Western Illinois University and his Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University.

The Cornell Awards were established by the Board of Trustees of Rollins College in 2004 in honor of Rollins' beloved alumnus and longtime trustee George Cornell, whose generous $93 million bequest made the award possible. Each award recipient will receive a $10,000 stipend.
