Mission Statement:
MISSION
STATEMENT:
The
central mission of the Christian A. Johnson Institute for Effective Teaching
is to help faculty improve their understanding of how students learn, and to
help them develop new strategies for teaching that better facilitate learning.
The Institute is a home for faculty programs, projects, and initiatives that
focus on deliberate, reflective, and ongoing studies and practice of effective
teaching. This office also provides direction in the area of institutional effectiveness.
Specifically, this includes developing and implementing procedures for setting
learning goals, planning educational activities, and establishing evaluation
procedures for classes, general education categories, and academic majors in
order to enhance student learning.
PROGRAM
GOALS:

To provide opportunities
for faculty to learn and share effective teaching practices

To provide orientation
and mentoring for new faculty.
·
To support discussions
of faculty scholarship.
·
To provide opportunities
to build an intellectual community at Rollins.
SERVICES:
- Workshops and
Colloquia: Two-hour or half-day training sessions
on specific topics related to teaching, research, and planning.
- Faculty Seminars:
Book discussions for faculty on topics of
teaching and intellectual growth.
- Orientation
and Mentoring for New Faculty: Initial meeting
before classes begin and then monthly meetings focusing on effective teaching
and campus culture. Classroom visits and consultation as requested.
- Consultations
By Request: With individual faculty, departments
and programs concerning issues of teaching and planning,
- Videotaping
Classes: By request and in conjunction with
individual consultations.
- Assessment
Interviews: Focus groups conducted with students
in your class or major to determine ways to improve learning.
- Faculty Scholarship
Forums: Monthly meetings for faculty to discuss
their research with peers.
- Faculty Day
of Scholarship and Teaching: Half-day local conference of concurrent
presentations by faculty of their scholarship and teaching.
- Johnson Institute
Library: Books, videos, and handouts on teaching,
learning, planning, and higher education. Located in Mills 208.
- Effective Teaching
Listserv: Join the listserv for Rollins faculty
and receive teaching tips as well as ideas from other faculty on any subject
