Learning Goal: Better understanding of the financial
piece of the business
Program Attended: Financial Analysis for Non-Financial
Managers
I thought the Rollins College Management and Executive Education
program I signed up for would be a textbook lesson, and, honestly,
not very exciting. Was I in for a surprise. The program ended
up being more of a fast-paced symposium with a well-crafted
agenda.
It was a very exciting and valuable class. We analyzed case
studies, financial reports, and proformas on actual companies.
By evaluating actual company financial information, we were
able to understand the link between the financials and the
company's performance. Working together in teams, we then
prepared strategies for the company.
This hands-on, interactive exercise had such value for me.
It gave me a better understanding of cash flow, financial
statements-all the things you need to successfully run a company.
I can't say enough about the faculty leader. He used the
textbook, but added a great deal of valuable information beyond
the text. In three days I was never bored-which is unusual
for me. I was impressed with the faculty leader's level of
intelligence and his real world experience. Not only did he
have the education and the background, but he also had the
knack of involving the class in discussion. He talked with
us not to us.
When I got back to the office, I had more confidence. I
can always depend on my financial department, but it's much
better to have a clearer understanding of the principles so
every member of the team is on the same page.
For any professional development activity, I weigh the investment
of time against the anticipated return. I would say Rollins
College Executive Management and Education programs require
a small investment of time for a tremendous value of information.
And the opportunity to network with the people there, to talk
about their business and the issues facing them, and discuss
where to go from here was incredibly valuable.
The bottom line? If you're looking for challenging programs
to bring yourself up a notch or two, Rollins College Management
& Executive Education is the place to go.
