Workshop I: Designing & Developing Effective Training

 

This two day program teaches participants how to design training that produces learning and results. It guides them through each stage of the learning process including:

  • the diagnosing of learning needs
  • how to select learning activities that will maximize the mastery and retention of content
  • strategies for addressing different learning styles
  • creating useful instructional materials
  • evaluating the effectiveness of training

In this hands-on-workshop, participants will practice and apply the concepts they are learning. This is accomplished though the use of team and individual activities and exercises. Participants are encouraged to bring training projects they would like to work on to the class.

  • The role of learning and development in the organization
  • Needs assessment methods and tools
  • Selecting the appropriate needs assessment tool
  • Building credibility and the support of management
  • Conducting a performance-consulting interview to identify the cause of productivity problems
    ¨ Identifying participants' learning preferences to maximize impact and retention
    ¨ Utilizing adult learning principles
    ¨ Designing training that increases adults attention and retention
    ¨ Developing learning objectives
    ¨ Matching learning objectives to learning methods
    ¨ Creating useful training materials
    ¨ Selecting exercises and activities to increase learning
    ¨ Linking evaluations to learning objectives to measure results
    ¨ Strategies for ensuring the transfer of learning to the job
    ¨ Evaluating training at the reaction, learning, application, and results levels

Workshop II: Conducting Training & Facilitating Learning

Even the best designed and researched training programs can fail, if the instructor is unable to engage the group and create a climate for learning. This two day course develops skills in both delivering training programs and facilitating classroom learning activities. The course is designed to build skills in: conducting and debriefing exercises; leading group discussions; asking questions and presenting information; and managing the learning process.

  • Creating and maintaining a positive learning climate
  • Addressing the needs of adult learners
  • Conducting a variety of learning activities to address different learning styles
  • Giving directions and instructions
  • Delivering information in a clear and concise way
  • Using visual aids such as PowerPoint, flip charts, and posters to enhance learning
  • Debriefing exercises to increase learning
  • Planning activities that will maintain interest and involvement throughout the session
  • Using questioning strategies to increase learning
  • Knowing when and how to intervene
  • Managing sensitive situations and difficult participants

 

Participants will have the opportunity to participate in videotaped skill practice sessions and receive individual coaching from the instructor. Participants will use their own program content for these activities.

About Nancy Lampen, M.S.

Nancy Lampen is Director of Management Programs for Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Great Lakes Region. She specializes in teaching train the trainer and communications programs. Additionally, she manages, as well as teaches in, Cornell's Global Strategic Executive Human Resources Management Certificate Program, a program that provides training for senior human resources executives in Mexico and Argentina.

In 1998 Nancy was named to Who's Who Among America's Teachers. She has over 20 years' experience in program design and teaching adults. Her expertise is in the design and teaching of programs in the areas of : learning and development, train the trainer, interpersonal communication skills, crisis communication, presentation skills, listening, assertiveness training, group dynamics, and meeting skills. She has trained for organizations including: Xerox Corporation; ITT Automotive; BMW, Inc.; Playtex; Berwick Industries; Symbol Technologies; White and Case LLP.; Strong Memorial Hospital; the Bermuda Employers Association and the National League of Cities. Before joining Cornell, she was a tenured professor at Monroe Community College in the field of communications.

She is the co-author of Crisis Communication for Local Government Managers an IQ Report for the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) December 2002 and the article "Thinking About The Unthinkable: Workplace Crisis Management" in the June 2002 edition of Perspectives on Work . She was featured in: "Effective crisis management in light of September 11." Business & Legal Reports 330: 1 (March, 2002). Nancy spoke on workplace violence for a television special filmed by the BBC.

Nancy holds a bachelor's degree in communications from SUNY College at Brockport, a master's degree in adult education from the University of Rochester, a Graduate Certificate in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University ILR and completed a year of graduate work in communications at SUNY Buffalo. She is certified in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Personal Profile System and is a member of the American Society of Training and Development. Nancy serves on the board of the Conference on Management and Executive Education.
