From Caveman to Computer: Introduction to the History of Recorded Information (Non-LLC)

Course Description

Why is it that almost all humans learn to speak and understand language as infants, but we don't all learn to read and write, and if we do it is difficult and we do it much later? Because writing is a technology rather than an innate part of being human. This course will be an introduction to the history of recorded information focusing on the moments of technological change: from orality to literacy, from scroll to codex, from manuscript to print, the explosion of media in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the one we are currently living through, i.e., from print to digital. This course will help you better understand what is happening around you as daily newspapers go out of business and books can be read on your iPhone.

This course is linked to ARH 101: Introduction to Visual Culture.

Why did you decide to come to Rollins?

I actually really didn't want to visit Rollins the summer before my senior year when my mom and I made a road trip out of my college visits, but my mom made me. I had never heard of Rollins so I assumed it wouldn't be worth visiting. I couldn't have been more wrong because as soon as we were on campus I knew Rollins was where I wanted to spend the next four years. The size, liberal education, and athletics were a perfect fit for me, and the location was great too.

What's your favorite Rollins memory?

Fox Day! It had been so anticipated all year, so I almost couldn't believe it when it was finally here. All of campus was awake and filled with excitement by 6:30 am. The whole day was a much needed break from the stress of classes and work.

What makes you come alive on campus?

I love being on a team…so much so that I am on two sports teams at Rollins (cross country and crew). They keep me busy and involved, and have been an instant way for me to meet new people and learn new things. The competition involved also gives me motivation to try harder and ensure that I am reaching my full potential.

Why did you become a Peer Mentor?

I was absolutely petrified of moving 1000 miles away from home to a school where I didn't know anyone, so having peer mentors really helped to show me that there was nothing to be afraid of. I want to do the same for other students who are nervous about such a big change.

What most excites you about next year?

I am very eager to begin next year with an entire year of experience under my belt. I know what to expect out of the challenging courses I am enrolled in and how to better manage my time and stress.

What's your advice to First-Year Students?

DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT! Everyone is going to be in the exact same situation as you when you all arrive at Rollins. And when you get here, you will quickly discover that you had nothing to worry about and that you are beginning the best and most exciting four years of your life!
