Costa Rica Pre-Semester Expedition

The Office of International Programs and the Department of Environmental Studies are offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for twelve incoming students to start their college career with an intense and exciting twelve day journey through the pristine tropical rainforests of Costa Rica. The Costa Rica Expedition will be led by Dr. Barry Allen, a veteran of over thirty field studies to Central and South America with over twenty of them specifically to Costa Rica.

The expedition will focus on the culture and environment of Costa Rica with specific focus on sustainable development and the flourishing ecotourism industries found inside the Costa Rican borders.Dr. Allen will lead participants on a variety of hikes and exercises that will give them hands on learning experiences and allow them to interact and learn from local guides and experts about bats, frogs, monkeys, birds, and other unique species found only in Costa Rica. Only a small portion of the field study will be spent in the costal lowlands and populated cities.A majority of the expedition will take place in the protected rain and cloud forests in the higher elevations in the Monteverde region.

This expedition is for students interested in increasing their cultural awareness, learning about sustainable development, participating in an intense collaborative learning experience, and are willing and able to sustain moderate physical activity over extended periods of time while hiking.

This expedition will be an official Rollins Field Study Course and participants will earn two credit hours upon course completion.
