It is important to realize that providing a community with a source of potable water doesn't necessarily lead to a reduction in the incidence of diarrheal disease. One must also have a program of sanitation and hygiene promotion. Here is how WHO puts it:
"Epidemiological evidence suggests that sanitation is at least as effective in preventing disease as improved water supply. The simple act of washing hands with soap and water can reduce diarrhoeal disease transmission by one-third." (WHO)
Our goal, then, is not only to provide access to potable water, but to promote sanitation and hygiene education as well. The ILAC Health Promoters have been helping to incorporate proper hygiene into the daily routine of the community. Additionally, illustrated pamphlets that show proper use of the filters and general sanitation are being produced for distribution.
