IEW 2007

International Education Week was celebrated at Rollins from November 12 - 16 with a variety of activities and events.  The Offices of International Student & Scholar Services, International Programs, Multicultural Affairs (OMA), and Sodexho Dining Services co-sponsored the week's events.  The kickoff (literally) started with the Rollins World Cup Soccer tournament with 4 teams representing Bulgaria, Colombia, England, and Jordan competing.  Each team had at least a few players from that country.  Teams were from Rollins and UCF.  After an exciting series of matches, England took the cup!  Thank you to all the members of the teams who showed their sportsmanship and enthusiasm.

That same day, the International Photo Contest exhibit opened in Darden Lounge, giving the community an opportunity to view and submit votes for their favorite photos.  Thank you to the hardwork by students Kelly McNoldy and Zach Lee who organized the Photo Contest and the exhibit.

The week continued with a dinner celebration of Diwali, a major Indian festival celebrated across the globe, as the "Festival of Lights," where the lights or lamps signify victory of good over evil.  This dinner was sponsored by DESI, the Southeast Asian Student Association.

CultureFest 2007 was held Wednesday and featured a lunch menu of delicious foods from around the world.  A big thanks to the Sodexho team for their hard work and cooperation in putting the menu together.  The community was also entertained by some of our own students who performed poetry readings, the Chinese zither, and bellydance.  We also got to enjoy a presentation of Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art dance.

Thank you to Dalitso Nyalani from OMA for organizing these wonderful performances as well as the Rollins World Cup.  Additional thanks to the various student organizations who hosted tables and provided activities for us to learn about their cultures and to quiz our flag and geography knowledge!  These organizations included the International Student Organization, Caribbean Students Association, Asian American Students Association, and the Cultural Action Committee.

The last event included two more dance performances.  We enjoyed more bellydancing and a special presentation of the tininkling, the Philippine National Dance.  Finally, 8 teams challenged each other and themselves on their knowledge of global affairs in a Curtis Earth Trivia Show, brought to Rollins by the efforts of student Daniel Tuegel and FoxFunds.  In addition to the above mentioned offices, staff, and students, I would like to extend gratitude to the entire community for supporting these events in celebration of International Education.

International Food & Arts Festival 2006

On November 16, 2006, the Rollins community joined together to celebrate International Education Week.  This week promotes the importance of the exchange of ideas across cultures through studying abroad and welcoming international students on our campuses.  Rollins College has 144 international students from 49 different countries.

To honor the diversity of our international students as well as our faculty & staff from other countries, the Office of the President has installed a permanent display of the flags representing their countries in the Cornell Campus Center - Skillman Dining Room.  At this time, the display represents primarily the international students' countries.  We would like for all students, faculty & staff who were born abroad to identify their countries of origin that are not represented so that we can add to the flag display.  Please email me - Jenifer Leon (jleon@rollins.edu) with the information.

A special thanks to the following members of the Rollins community for their role in making the festival a huge success - Office of the President, International Programs, International Student Services, Multicultural Affairs, Jane Wurzelbacher & OSIL, the student organizations that shared with us their interests - CAC, Hillel, LASA, ISO, BSU, my RCC class (Around the World in 80 Days) for their help in the PR, dj-ing, and hosting, RCC Activism 101 for sharing their mission of raising funds for schools in Ecuador, Dining Services for their delicious international cuisine, our very talented students - Ashleigh Markel, alumni Don McClellan, the Thought Doctors band, Adriana Ospina, Stephanie Ospina, Adetya Gayah, Jamie Ruiz & Johens Uviera, Corey Gregory and Alain Blanchard.

Enjoy the photos below which illustrate the strength and appreciation of Rollins' diversity!
