WEBLOGS:
"A weblog, which is usually shortened to blog, is a type of website where entries are made (such as in a
journal or
diary), displayed in a reverse chronological order.
Blogs often provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Most blogs are primarily textual although many focus on photograph (photoblog), videos (vlog), or audio (podcasting).
The word blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog."1
FOXBLOGS:
Overview:
Rollins College students, staff and faculty may create a link to their blogs to support their curricular, personal and scholarly communication activities. Although there are many blogging opportunities and software available for use, we encourage the use of Blogger.com
(January 10, 2007 - new features!) due to ease of setup, functionality and advertising-free blogging. Additionally, Blogger.com offers advance features for
privacy, posting audio and images easily to your blog.
Blogger.com is an extremely user-friendly site to use, however, there may be times when assistance is needed. They provide a help section at http://help.blogger.com/ which can be extremely useful. There are two steps for creating your blog:
- Blogger.com account creation – http://www.blogger.com – click the “Create your Blog Now” icon --
(Effective January 10, 2007 - users must first have a
Google Account before creating your Blogger account - follow the instructions
on the http://www.blogger.com page)
(blogger.com)
- Next, you will need to create your free blog on blogspot.com – click the “Create a Blog” icon –
(blogger.com)
During this process you will be asked to select a URL for your blog on blogspot.com – please make note of this URL.
(blogger.com)
Example: http://username.blogspot.com
INCLUDING YOUR BLOG IN A WEB PAGE:
Once created, you may want to include your blog in your personal Web or Blackboard page. You can do that in two different ways:
- As a hyperlink: Some software editors (FrontPage) will allow you to create a hyperlink by just knowing the address. For example the address is http://rcfoxblogs.blogspot.com and the Text to Display is Rollins College FoxBlogs.
- or -
- Embedded page: Rather than creating a hyperlink, you
can easily hide the link by copying the text below and embedding your journal
in your website. Please note that on some software editors (FrontPage)
you must select Html View:
<center>
<iframe name="blogger" src="http://username.blogspot.com/"
frameborder="0" scrolling="auto" height="900" width="100%">
<a href="http://username.blogspot.com/"></a>
</iframe>
</center>
You will need to replace username with your blog name.
Example:
<center>
<iframe name="blogger" src="http://rcfoxblogs.blogspot.com/"
frameborder="0" scrolling="auto" height="900" width="100%">
<a href="http://rcfoxblogs.blogspot.com/"></a>
</iframe>
</center>
MONITORING BLOG: Effective
January 10, 2007: (Blogger.com)
By default, your blog is completely public, and can be read by anyone on the
internet. However, if you want to keep it private, you can do that, too. The
setting for this is on the Settings | Permissions tab.
Under the "Blog Readers" heading, you will probably see "Anybody" selected
as the default. When you chage this to "Only readers I choose," you will get
an "Add Readers" button.
Click the "Add Readers" button and then enter the email address of a person
to whom you want to grant access to your blog. To add multiple people,
separate their addresses with commas.
For each address entered, the Google Account associated with that address
will be given access to view your blog. If an address is not associated with
an account, that person will be sent an invitation email. In this email will
be a link which will let them do one of three things:
- Sign in to an existing account.
- Create a new account.
- View your blog as a guest (no account required).
In the first two cases, the reader will be given permission to view your
blog whenever they are logged in to their Google Account. As a guest, they
will be able to continue viewing your blog by clicking the link from the
invitation email, but this will expire after two weeks. After that, they will
need a new invitation.
If you want to revoke someone's access to your blog, you can simply click
the "remove" link next to his or her name in the "Blog Readers" list. You can
also toggle back to the "Anybody" option any time you decide to make the blog
completely public again.
ADDING A DISCLAIMER:
Finally, It is recommended that a disclaimer be placed on your page. In your Blogger.com account - under Blog, Template, Edit Current – scroll down the html text box until you find:
<!-- Begin #footer -->
<div id="footer"><div><div><hr />
<p><!-- This is an optional footer. If you want text here, place it inside these tags, and remove this comment. --> </p>
</div></div></div>
<!-- End #footer -->
Replace this sample bold text above with the following, remembering to replacing
username with your actual name.
