Acceptable Use Policy
For Computer Labs
Rollins College

Computer/Internet Access
..... Access to public lab facilities is
provided by Rollins Information Technology as a service to students,
staff and faculty to better achieve the mission of the college. Users
must carry a Rollins College identification (R-Card) per College policy.
Users may be asked at any time to provide identification i.e. R-Card.
..... Use of IT computers, networking or
facilities constitutes consent to the Rollins College Information Technology
(IT) Acceptable Use Policy and any policies instituted by IT governing
the use of lab environments, facilities, and equipment.
..... Limited use of privilege may be granted
to official visitors or guests of Rollins College.
..... Access to servers is restricted to
persons with justifiable claims to view the information. Persons attempting
to access restricted areas may be banned from Rollins College computing
resources and facilities.
..... Technology use is a privilege, not
a right and usres are not guaranteed privacy while using the lab facilities.
At any time you may be subject to audio or video surveillance. Storage
space on servers or e-mail accounts may be subject to search and or
seizure given security or law enforcement reasons.
E-mail
.....E-mail accounts are provided by
the College for the use of faculty, staff and students for the purposes
of communication, research, instruction, or other institutional matters.
The College normally considers e-mail to be private, however there is
no actual right to privacy. The College reserves the right to access
e-mail accounts for security and law enforcement purposes.
Care of equipment
.....All individuals using the facilities
provided by the College are expected to show proper care and respect
for the facilities and equipment. Intentional damage to or theft of
equipment will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Hacking
is defined as the destructive act of tampering with computing equipment,
software, and facilities. Users engaging in hacking may be banned from
access to Rollins College computing resources and facilities.
Food, drinks and smoking in labs
.....Food, drinks and smoking are not
allowed in the computer labs. This includes beverages and products in
containers that may be closed. The individual may be liable for damage
caused by disregard of this prohibition.
Acceptable Use
.....Use o the computer facilities and
Internet access is to be strictly within the scope of the mission, goals
and objectives of the College. Use outside the mission of the College
without specific authorization may result in loss of access to the computer
facilities or more severe punishment. In no circumstances is anyone
authorized to use the College’s facilities for any illegal act.
Operation of a commercial enterprise on college equipment is not permitted.
Unacceptable Use
.....
Any action, intentional
or otherwise, which interferes with others' use of Rollins servers,
networks or systems, will subject the user to disciplinary action
through the appropriate channels.
Illegal Acts
.....Violators of the Florida and U.S.
Statutes and Laws and copyright laws following will be referred to law
enforcement as well as have other actions taken against them by the
College disciplinary board.
The Florida Computer Crimes Act (Ch. 815, Florida
Statutes) states that unauthorized use of computing facilities is a
crime. This includes:
1. Unauthorized access to another user’s account is a felony.
2. Unauthorized modification or deletion or copying of files or programs
is a felony.
3. Unauthorized modification or damage to computer equipment is a misdemeanor,
unless the damage exceeds $200, when it becomes a felony.
.....U.S. copyright law
(Title 17, U.S. Code) prohibits the unauthorized reproduction or distribution
of copyrighted materials except as permitted by the principles of “fair
use”. The same restrictions apply to electronic materials including
computer software. Infringements of copyright law are the responsibility
of the individual, not the College.
..... Federal law (18
USC section 2252) deals with child pornography and makes it a felony
to knowingly download, post, or transport material that depicts minors
(anyone under the age of 18) in a sexually explicit way.
.....Other Federal and state statutes
deal with other illegal acts such as sending messages via e-mail that
threaten other persons or property, e.g., actual or hoax bomb threats,
etc., and using electronic means to transmit scams and pyramid schemes.
.....Notify the system administrator
if you receive e-mail of any of the above types including, but not limited
to, email messages that are sent in a repetitive manner that are not
requested.
.....You should never give out your password,
nor should anyone have cause to ask you for it. If you are asked, contact
the Help Desk, x6363.
.....If any inappropriate e-mail, including
but not limited to the list above, is sent, then user’s account
will be disabled and removed, pending appropriate disciplinary procedures.
Tampering with security systems
.....Some of the administrative activities
of the College are not open to everyone. Access on servers is restricted
to those with justifiable claims for accessing said information. Persons
attempting to access restricted may be banned from access to Rollins
College computing resources and facilities.
Breaking (or attempting to break) the security systems put in place
by the College computing resources and facilities.
Downloading and saving programs
.....The computers provided in the college
labs are the property of the College. They are provided for the temporary
use of students for class work. Downloading and saving files on these
computers fills up the hard drive and may slow down or stop operation
of the computer. Downloaded and saved files will be erased and individuals
who are guilty of this on a regular basis are subject to termination
of their use privileges.
.....Copying software
without the permission of the software authors and/or publishers is
illegal, in violation of Title 17 of the U.S. Copyright code. Proof
license is required prior to the installation request being granted.
Additional note: Shareware,
or user-supported software, is copyrighted software the developer encourages
you to copy and distribute to others. This permission is explicitly
stated in the documentation or displayed on the computer screen.
Public Domain means that the software is not subject to any copyright
restrictions. It can be copied and shared freely. Software without copyright
notice is often, but not necessarily, in the public domain.
Before you copy or distribute software that is not explicitly in the
public domain, check with the Help Desk (x6363).
