In October, 1943 one of the most daring revolts was staged by the prisoners at Sobibor. Fearing that news of the revolt would stir other
camps, the Nazis closed the camp and covered it with dirt
and planted trees so that it would be forgotten. In 2008,
the University of Hartford went back to the camp and using
high tech equipment was able to map and excavate parts of
the camp, including the gas chambers, that were still
there.
