"Highlights and Un-highlights of St. Lucia"
January 31, 2007
I’ll quote my good friend Ron Burgundy in saying that “I’m not
even mad. I’m impressed...” with how consistently good (in terms of
frequency and quality) my R-Journal updates have been…
Last time, for those of you who are not refreshing this page every
two minutes, I took you all with me on my quick recruiting trip to
Boston. This time, we’ll go a bit more exotic. We’ll go to Latin
America.
Each year growing up, my parents abandoned my brother, my sister,
and myself as they set off for a Thanksgiving cruise. My early
childhood Thanksgivings were all spent with grandparents, aunts,
in-laws, and often a hot dog (both my brother and I were extremely
picky eaters). However, as time has gone on, both my palate and my
parents’ tolerance for their children (just kidding Mom, I know you
are reading this! I love you!) have increased, and we’ve started to
be included in the festivities. For the most recent cruise, we set
off from San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the deep Southern Caribbean.
While I don’t want to get bogged down in the details (heck, I don’t
even think I remember half of the places we stopped), I will point
out a couple of the highlights—and “un-highlights.”
I really enjoyed spending some time on the beautiful island of St.
Lucia. We got to St. Lucia, boarded an extremely sketchy boat, and
headed off to an active volcano. (FYI: volcanoes smell like sulfur.
If you don’t know what sulfur smells like, you probably should not
be applying to Rollins, but it smells like eggs. Yuck.) This was
pretty cool. Our tour guide told us of how they used to take
visitors into the lava pit to boil eggs. Again, pretty cool.
However, someone fell into the lava and died so they ended the
tradition. Not so cool. We also visited a bat cave and a pretty fun
beach. The beaches in St. Lucia have black sand. Any guesses why?
The volcano actually spewed volcanic ash that created black sand.
My “un-highlight” was spent in bed. Literally.

| More about Steve...
While searching for colleges as a high school senior, Steve
found the R-Journals at Rollins, which aided in his
final decision between the United States Military Academy at
West Point and Rollins College. Steve is a senator in the
Student Government Association, a freelance photographer for
The Sandspur
student newspaper, plays intramural basketball and
founded Rollins Relief, an organization dedicated to helping
disaster victims around the world through hands-on service.
Steve is a Cornell Scholar, a member of the Honors Degree
Program and a
3-2/Accelerated Management Program student. He said,
“Rollins offers an amazing community experience to incoming
students—one filled with both academic and social
experiences. The two can certainly mix—academics and
socializing do not have to be mutually exclusive.”
