"Enough of Summer"
October 5, 2006
Greetings R-Journal Readers!
It is a pleasure to address you from my new location on the Rollins
Campus—which will remain undisclosed at the time (fans and stalkers,
you know). However, I can assure you that my new digs are quite
spacious and conducive to journal writing. Anyway, I trust that all
of your summers went incredibly well. I know mine did.

Since I last wrote, I’ve traveled back to Ohio to visit a good
friend and vacationed in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Since
August, however, I’ve been back on campus and have loved getting
back into the swing of things. Sounds crazy, huh? I know that in
high school I was not a huge fan of the whole “back-to-school”
routine. Amazing what a couple of years can do for your outlook.
First, keep in mind that the college summer break is incredibly
long. At Rollins, we essentially break from early May until late
August—close to four months. And, while one can certainly find lots
to do during his or her free months, enough is enough! While on
break, you definitely begin to miss familiar faces and even the
routine that is college. Needless to say, I was ready!

For me, the second year of college holds a similar feeling of
excitement to that of the first year. It’s a better feeling, though.
Gone are the unknowns and the nebulous of college. You know what to
expect—although I’d hate to imagine a year without any surprises.
You know how amazing college is—but also realize how hard it can be.
You know the locations of the buildings, the value of a meal plan
dollar, the magic of an empty parking spot and just how long you can
put off writing that six pager. I don’t think any amount of time in
college, however, can prepare you for the people that you will meet,
the professors who will challenge you, and the experiences that are
at once life changing and unforgettable.
My first couple of months back at school have been incredibly
fun—and busy. I’m lucky to play an executive role again on the
Student Government Association; this year, I get to manage students
on all of the College’s committees on subjects ranging from food to
finances. To start off the year, we had a great retreat at Cocoa
Beach. (When you join organizations, it’s never a bad idea to ask
where they go on retreats!) So far, we’ve been working hard to
implementing a student voice into all sorts of big decisions on
campus. It’s going quite well!

I’ve also been involved with the service organization that I helped
to start, Rollins Relief. Together with a group of interested
students and faculty, I am planning a trip back to New Orleans for
January. Students will receive two credits for the class, as it will
take place during the January Intersession. Regular R-Journal
readers might remember my Intersession class from last semester…it
was pretty cool! This trip will be a massive undertaking as we are
planning to take a total of 60 people. I’m actually headed back into
New Orleans this weekend to plan for the trip.
Anyway, I’ve got lots more to update you all on, but I’ve got to
run…please email me with questions and comments. I love to hear how
you all are doing!

| More about Steve...
While searching for colleges as a high school senior, Steve
found the R-Journals at Rollins, which aided in his
final decision between the United States Military Academy at
West Point and Rollins College. Steve is a senator in the
Student Government Association, a freelance photographer for
The Sandspur
student newspaper, plays intramural basketball and
founded Rollins Relief, an organization dedicated to helping
disaster victims around the world through hands-on service.
Steve is a Cornell Scholar, a member of the Honors Degree
Program and a
3-2/Accelerated Management Program student. He said,
“Rollins offers an amazing community experience to incoming
students—one filled with both academic and social
experiences. The two can certainly mix—academics and
socializing do not have to be mutually exclusive.”
