"Where in the world is Steve Miller?"
January 29, 2007
Greetings R-Journal Readers!
You might have noticed that my journals have become, well, quite
sporadic. Of course, there is a good reason for my lack of updates.
No, my life is not entirely boring (mostly boring would probably be
the more accurate descriptor). Rather, I’ve been busy. You might
think that your high school schedule was busy. I’m sure it is.
However, just to put things in a frame of reference, I’ve traveled
more than 20,000 miles in the past 45 days. That’s great for my
frequent flier account, but not so great for you R-Journal readers.
However, as always, I have a plan. Let’s put together a schedule to
bring everyone up to speed.
We left off in October. If you are a frequent reader (or a reader at
all, given my updating habits), you’ll remember that I had just
returned to Rollins after several great days back in New Orleans. I
write this journal on the tail end of a Rollins Intersession class
trip to New Orleans, so I suppose it brings everything just about
full circle. What did you miss in between? Let’s give a few brief
summaries (which we will return to in future—the imminent future, I
promise—R-Journals):
October 2006: Recruiting Trip to Boston. Canvassing a city in 48
hours is tough. Well, together with my friends Ed and Kate from
Rollins’ Admissions, we did just that—and still had some time for
fun. More on the trip (and on an interesting side trip to Salem at
night) next time.
November 2006: My Southern Caribbean cruise…as is my family’s
tradition, I headed to some exotic locales for the Thanksgiving
holiday. Unfortunately, the vacation ended quite tragically (don’t
worry, nobody died). More on that in the next journal (complete with
photos!).
December 2006: I returned home to Cleveland after a stressful DAY of
finals. That’s right, only one final for me this semester. Don’t be
fooled: I definitely made up for my lack of final exams in that I
wrote a combined 70 pages in my last two weeks of classes. That’s
right. 70 pages. From Cleveland, I headed almost straight to Chicago
for a day trip. Two days later, I flew out to London to visit a
Rollins graduate studying at Oxford and to spend some time with
Rollins students studying abroad for the fall semester. I returned
home just in time for Santa Claus, and headed out again to Florida
for my great-grandmother’s 100th birthday party two days later. Add
in a family New Years’ celebration at the extraordinary Gaylord
Palms Resort, and you’ve got quite the month. Whew.
January 2007: After an exhausting December, my year has started off
with a bang. I’ve already mentioned that I’m writing from the very
spartan Louis Armstrong International Airport after Intersession.
(FYI: Intersession is a one-week term just before the start of
second semester in which students can optionally take an intense,
two- credit class.) You might remember that I founded Rollins Relief
just after Hurricane Katrina. This trip marks my fifth to New
Orleans since March 2006. I’m beginning to feel like a local. Our
intersession class is the largest service-learning class in Rollins’
history…53 students and 10 faculty strong! I’ve got lots to write on
our amazingly successful trip…but not for a couple more journals
(and not until I finish up my mini-vacation to South Florida this
weekend).
Hope you all are doing well. Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Hanukkah,
Merry Christmas, Kwanza Greetings, and Happy New Year for all the
holidays I missed in between journals.
Please feel free to jot me a note. I know you’ve missed me.
Best,
Steve

| More about Steve...
While searching for colleges as a high school senior, Steve
found the R-Journals at Rollins, which aided in his
final decision between the United States Military Academy at
West Point and Rollins College. Steve is a senator in the
Student Government Association, a freelance photographer for
The Sandspur
student newspaper, plays intramural basketball and
founded Rollins Relief, an organization dedicated to helping
disaster victims around the world through hands-on service.
Steve is a Cornell Scholar, a member of the Honors Degree
Program and a
3-2/Accelerated Management Program student. He said,
“Rollins offers an amazing community experience to incoming
students—one filled with both academic and social
experiences. The two can certainly mix—academics and
socializing do not have to be mutually exclusive.”
