COMPANY INFORMATION

After developing a sense of the industries that operate across the globe, one has the base to look at specific companies. It is important to have access to as much information as possible about individual companies. Therefore, it is important to use all of the information sources available to you, including Web sites, databases, and books.

COMPANY INFORMATION WEB SITES

EDGAR Database - US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

All foreign and domestic companies must file registration statements and reports with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Use the EDGAR database to find annual company reports from American and international companies. Select “Search for Company Filings” and then choose to search for companies, latest filings, historical EDGAR archives, Central Index Key (CIK), current events analysis, or mutual fund prospectuses. To find company information, choose “Companies and Other Filers”. Use the search engine to find company information by company name, state, file number, CIK, or SIC code. A brief database tutorial is provided on the home page.


Hoover’s Online

To find company information, use the search engine at the top of the page. Search by company name or by ticker symbol by selecting your choice from the drop down box next to the search engine. Hoover’s provides capsules and some company financial information for free. For access to more detailed company information in Hoover’s, contact your local library to find out if they subscribe to the Hoover’s database.


Fortune: Company Lists

Fortune magazines site provides current business news, along with company profiles and lists of the Fortune and Global 500 companies, the best companies to work for, most admired companies, fastest growing, and information about company CEOs.


Yahoo! Finance Home Page

To find information about particular companies on the Yahoo! Finance home page, click on Ticker Symbol Lookup to find out company ticker symbols. Then enter the ticker symbol in the search engine. When you select the “Chart” option from the drop down box, you will find stock information and you can compare company stocks.


Thomas Register of American Manufacturers

The Thomas Register is a comprehensive online resource for finding companies and products manufactured in North America. Use the Thomas Register search engine to find thousands of online company catalogs and Web sites. To use the search engine, enter word(s) in the search box after selecting the company option. Registration is required, but information is free.


Thomas Global Register

Thomas Global Register offers a directory of worldwide industrial product information. Use Thomas Global Register to search for 500,000 industrial suppliers, organized by 10,500 industrial product classifications, in 9 languages and from 26 countries. Use the search engine to find company information. Registration is required, but information is free.


Africa: Companies of Africa

An alphabetical listing of African companies providing company profiles and links to company Web sites.


Europages: The European Business Directory

Europages lists 500,000 small and medium sized companies in 33 European countries. Begin by selecting the language you wish to use in the directory. Use the search engine to search by company name, product and service, or activity and sector. You will find company contact information and links to company Web sites.


GlobalEdge Resource Desk: Company Directories

A list of links to Internet sites featuring company directories organized by global, regional, and country specific directories. Use this site to find various lists of companies in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America.


COMPANY INFORMATION DATABASES

Lexis Nexis Academic Universe
The Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe Business Database allows you to search for business and industry news and company information including company financial information and annual reports. Search for company financial information, SEC filings, Annual Reports, or bankruptcy filings. Also allows you to compare companies. 100% full text.


ProQuest Direct
A database of newspaper and trade journal articles from the mid-1980’s to the present. Use ProQuest to find company news published in newspapers and trade journals. For tailored research, use the Browse Lists feature for a search engine that can produce a list of company names. Available on or off campus to Rollins College students, faculty, and staff. Partial full text.


Valueline Investment Survey
Use the Valueline Investment Survey database to find information about 1,700 companies, more than 90 industries, the stock market, and the economy. Use the “Lookup Company” feature on the left-hand menu to find a company search engine. 100% full text.

International Directory of Company Histories

Profiles American and international companies. Each entry includes company contact information, founding date, number of employees, and sales figures. History includes summary of a company’s missions, goals and ideals, key dates are indicated, and the structure of the company is discussed. Further readings are suggested.
