Proposal Writing

Students pursuing the Certificate in Proposal Writing must take the proposal writing courses in sequence unless otherwise approved by the program manager.

Finding Funding and First Steps in Fundraising are prerequisites for the Proposal Writing series.

Proposal Writing I - Why Do We Want Funding? October 2, 2009
Proposal Writing II - Can I Prove We Make a Difference? October 16, 2009
Proposal Writing III - Does the Budget "Add Up" to Success? October 30, 2009
Proposal Writing IV - What Do Funders Want? November 13, 2009
Proposal Writing V - How Do We Know the Proposal Measures Up? December 4, 2009

This five-part series builds on the two prerequisite workshops, Finding Funding and First Steps in Fundraising, to give the attendee a complete grasp of what it takes to write an award-winning grant request. Beginning with the importance of building a strong and trusting relationship with the grantmaker, you will be guided through the process as you craft a proposal to submit at the completion of the series.

This is the only course of its kind that affords you the opportunity to meet face-to-face with local funders to hear what they look for in grant applications. You will have a critique of the proposal you wrote while attending the workshop series.

You will learn to:

  • clearly identify the problem to be solved
  • formulate a concise need statement corroborated by supportive data
  • write a need statement tied to outcome-based evaluation in an engaging story-telling style
  • capture the grant reviewer's interest
  • master creating a proposal budget and narrative text that addresses sustainability.

This is the only course of its kind that affords you the opportunity to meet face-to-face with local funders to hear what they look for in grant applications. You will even learn to evaluate components of professionally written proposals and have a critique of the proposal you wrote while attending the workshop series.

The fee for all five Proposal Writing workshops is $600 for Philanthropy Center Members and $1,100 for Non-members.

The instructor is Ms. Lee Bailey, MLS.
Lee is a program manager at the Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center and has over 30 years of grant writing experience and has written over $65 million in awards.
