Harold & Ted Alfond Sports Center
The
Harold & Ted Alfond Sports Center, a 77,800-square-foot
facility, more than doubles the previous athletic space
of the Enyart-Alumni Field
House. The completely renovated Warden
Performance Arena (pictured below) consists of 21,000
square feet of space and serves as the centerpiece for
the sports center and the "home court" for Rollins
sports, recreation and all-campus events. The facility
also includes the McKean Gymnasium for intramurals and
recreation play (as well as banquets and
concerts), athletic office suite, locker rooms, Daryl's Fitness Center,
two classrooms, and a Hall of Fame hospitality
area.
The
center is named for the Rollins parent, Harold Alfond, and his son,
Ted, who
provided a $3-million challenge grant to the College in
1996 to launch the project. Harold Alfond served as a trustee of the
College from 1977 until
1983, and in 1967 established the Alfond Athletic Scholarship,
which is awarded each year to an outstanding freshman
athlete/scholar. He has contributed generously toward
construction of the College's swimming pool, baseball stadium and boat house, all of which bear his name.
Both members of the Rollins Board of Trustees, Ted Alfond and his wife, Barbara, 1968 graduates,
established a $1 million endowed faculty chair in English in 1994.
Additional support for the construction came from
alumni, corporations and friends of the College,
including the Bert W. Martin Foundation and the
Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation. Construction began on
the the center in August 1999 and
the facility opened in December 2000. A formal dedication
of the center was held on February 23, 2001.
