Julian C. Chambliss, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of History

 

 

 

 

Where were you born or what city do you consider your hometown?

Sylacauga, Alabama, is my place of birth, but I consider Jacksonville, Florida, my hometown since I moved there when was I was nine.

What attracted you to Rollins?

I wanted to stay in this region and I was happy to get the chance to work at a school so committed to students and the community. 

What is your personal educational philosophy?

I try to maintain an open exchange of ideas, emphasize that historical study offers insights into contemporary issues and strive to include minority voices in traditional historical narrative.

What are your current research interests?

I am working on middle-class activism associated with the comprehensive city planning movement between 1900 and 1930 in Atlanta and Chicago. 

What are some of your favorite movies?

It is hard to pick just one, but I do love Star Wars

What would be your dream vacation?

A train ride through Europe. 

What are some of your favorite books?

A short list would include Making the Second Ghetto, by Arnold Hirsch; New Men, New Cities, New South, by Don H. Doyle; Planning the Twentieth Century City by Stephen Ward; Dune by Frank Herbert; and Seeing with their Hearts by Maureen A. Flanagan.

How do you spend your free time or weekends?

I enjoy hanging out with friends, reading and doing some research.    

What is something most people might be surprised to learn about you?

I study martial arts.
