Rollins Profiles

A sense of community is one of the many characteristics that makes Rollins College special. Let us introduce you to a few of the people who make up our community. Meet some of "R-People!"

Shimeyka Santos-Olivares

Hamilton Holt School student

Class of 2007

Where were you born or what city do you consider your hometown?

I am a Bronx girl. I lived in New York for 18 years, but Florida is my home now.

What year do you anticipate completing your undergraduate work?

Spring of 2007

What is your major?

My major is Psychology, and my minor is Organizational Communications.

Why did you choose Rollins?

I’ve decided to continue my education at Rollins because of the small class sizes and the individual attention the students receive from the professors. As a night student, I want to be there. And although most night students work full time and have families, it is important to know that we have professors who are understanding and flexible to a certain extent.

What are your career plans?

I recently started a new career, and I hope to grow within my organization. I also plan on becoming a Certified Meeting Professional and apply that to my current position.

How would you describe your educational experience at Rollins?

I’ve enjoyed almost every class that I have taken. Some are harder than others, but I’ve learned so much. Not only can I use a lot of what I’ve learned in my everyday life, but I have passed on information to help educate others.

What has been your favorite class and why?

I have several favorite classes, but one that sticks out is Mark Freeman's Dream Class. I learned to analyze not only my dreams, but also help others with their dreams.

What has been your best learning experience so far?

My best learning experience is knowing not to let the man take you down! Always rise above and be the bigger person in any situation no matter how hard it is.

Where is your favorite place to eat on campus?

On a cool spring day, I enjoy picnicking at the gazebo by the museum or the pool.

What is your favorite movie(s)?

I have many favorite movies, but my top three are: Tombstone, Goodfellas and The Wedding Singer.

What would be your dream vacation?

My dream vacation is anywhere my husband is. He is my best friend, and no matter where we go, it is always a great and memorable time.

How do you spend your free time or weekends?

The very little free time I do have I like to spend with the people I love: my friends and family.

What’s something people don’t know about you or might be surprised to learn?

I would prefer a relaxing evening at home with a nice bottle of wine to going out. I guess when one has very little free time, sitting back and relaxing is better than anything, as long as you have good wine!
